The media often touts its supposed ability to provide fact-based reporting, the kind that can “effectively hold government to account.”
Public trust in media sources has however been falling for years, as Australians have watched the media morph over time from a functionally important “fourth estate” into a relatively uncritical repeater of government messaging.
During recent periods of significant public discourse leading up to major policy changes like the under-16 social media ban and the introduction of new ‘hate and extremism’ laws, the media practically cheered from the sidelines.
They reported on what the government had laid out in their policy announcements, but left it at that, only superficially engaged with the many other perspectives passionately held across the Australian public.
If you were not on social media, you may have never heard about the massive public opposition to these changes. Perhaps that’s the way they want it? Afterall, governments have played an increasing role in funding mainstream media in Australia.
Historically, government funding for news outlets was limited to support for the publicly owned ABC and SBS. However, a new precedent was set in 2018 when the Federal Liberal Government began a ‘Regional and Small Publishers Jobs and Innovation Package’ aimed at helping small and regional media adapt to disruption by the internet and social media. This package provided $60 million over three years, with a focus on aiding staff retention.
A significant boost in funding came in 2020, when due to apparent concerns over job losses caused by the pandemic, the Federal Liberal government launched a year-long grant of $50 million in support of ‘public interest journalism’ in regional Australia.
The re-elected Federal Labor government has now committed to spending $153.5 million in support of the media sector over four years through their ‘News Media Assistance Program.’
Why should Government be propping up this industry to the exclusion of other industries which are also struggling?
The Government’s website says as follows:-
“The News Media Assistance Program (News MAP) sets out a framework and measures to support public interest journalism and media diversity in Australia—recognising these are critical to a healthy democracy, social cohesion and informed citizens.”
All the words we expect are in there “diversity”, “democracy” and “social cohesion” but lets get this straight, the Federal Labor Government is now using our money to support news outlets all around the country, many of which are reporting on politics in this nation.
How could that possibly be?

[ Multinational ] Accenture remains a major Commonwealth government contractor. The Department of Finance’s own data shows that Accenture was awarded:
A$577.6m in Commonwealth contracts in FY2023–24
A$793.1m in FY2024–25
A$3.8m so far in FY2025–26 in the Finance Department’s January 12, 2026 snapshot.
The last figure is clearly incomplete relative to contracts subsequently reported in 2026.
A later review of AusTender records found more than A$170m of additional federal work awarded to Accenture since November 2025.
Some of the important recent contracts
1. Australian Electoral Commission — A$66.7m
Accenture is building a platform for the AEC relating to disclosure of political donations and electoral expenditure. The contract was initially around A$30m and has subsequently reached about A$66.7m. The AEC says Accenture was selected through an open competitive procurement and that the project is progressing satisfactorily.
That’s particularly interesting politically because it’s directly connected to electoral transparency and Labor’s electoral-finance reforms.
2. Australian Digital Health Agency — A$51.7m
Accenture has continued providing national infrastructure services supporting My Health Record during the transition to a future delivery model. The 2025 contract was A$51.7m, with an option extending into 2027. Accenture has been the National Infrastructure Operator since 2012, with contracts in this area totalling hundreds of millions of dollars.
3. Australian Climate Service — A$15.7m
This is probably the most politically interesting one in relation to Charlton’s portfolio.
In March 2026, the Bureau of Meteorology awarded Accenture a three-year, roughly A$15.7m contract to build a platform for the Australian Climate Service. The ACS brings together the Bureau, CSIRO, Geoscience Australia and the ABS.
And there has been political scrutiny: Senator Fatima Payman moved successfully for documents concerning the procurement, including ministerial submissions, correspondence and value-for-money assessments.
4. ATO — A$11.5m
Accenture has also received a recent contract with the Australian Taxation Office worth approximately A$11.5m.

Today’s local Geelong newspaper reported on the massive homelessness in this town, which was not news to me, as I was told of the 5000-plus homeless by the manager of one of the main support outfits some three years ago.
Businesses around this town are staffed by masses of immigrant people whose employers I believe might well be generously subsidised by the federal government.
Add to that the number of immigrants working in other services like Star Track Express and Australia Post, and also working on the NBN and other technical occupations, the public transport via the local bus companies are also heavily staffed with immigrants, and you can see that we are being systemically white-anted.
And when you go to Parliament House in Melbourne the Wilson Security staff are largely immigrant
Geelong has consistently had, over many years, 7000+ unemployed, most of whom will have been forced to do training in various occupations, yet they are not forced, under threat of being cut off the dole, to apply for jobs filling local supermarket shelves, because the immigrants have been shoe-horned into those already.
This is an outrage coming to you from a federal government that cares little for its own, via making sure its constituents are fully employed or at least earning a living wage.
