THE ABC’s election guru Anthony Green has defended the Australian electoral system after a poster on X complained about Labor’s disproportionate seat haul in the South Australian elections.
“Australians will tell you there’s no propaganda here then turn on the TV to watch Antony Green tell them that this sort of thing is fine,”, a poster called “Wheelreinventor” said in reference to the figures in the chart (above) that he posted.
“An electoral system that can produce this result from these preferences isn’t a democracy, it’s a corrupt joke.” Cairns News agrees and asks how a party whose primary vote fell by 2.4% can increase its seats in the Lower House.
Responding, Green disingenuously suggested that because the present electoral system has been around for a long time we should accept it.
“Mate, if you want to advocate proportional representation, fine. But we have used single member electorates for 125 years. Chucking around words like “corrupt” just feeds the crazies who think someone is suddenly stealing election. Talk about irresponsible,” Green said in response.
Wheelinventor responded: “The purpose of a system is what is does. If it’s been around 125 yrs and consistently benefits the major parties in that time, then… I think it’s irresponsible to get on TV for decades and neglect to tell people that their system is corrupt, disproportionate, and wastes votes.
“I understand how it works just fine – I’m saying that the way it works is bad and designed to perpetuate the 2 party duopoly.”
Former so-called independent politician Tony Winsdor joined the fray and sucked up to Green: “I admire your tenacity Antony in explaining how our electoral system works to those who have no idea. Education is invaluable and someone with your credibility is the right man for the job.”

Just because an electoral system has been unchanged for 125 years it doesn’t make it good.
Most Australians have no idea about preferential voting, or that there vote for one party can end up supporting another

It is rigged to support the 2 main parties, Labor & Liberal historically – just like lobbying and political funding for major parties protects them from competition.
It should be remodelled offering no bias towards any party, that would be a true Democracy. And we are nowhere near that.
As I wrote another day, the voter should be allowed to put an X against any candidate they do not want because you basically are forced to choose between the two front-runners which you may not want especially if they are both UnaParty incl Green and Teal Parties, this should be obvious even to Anthony Green whose computer always breaks down on live TV. Even Anthony Green would be able to understand, a system where preference voting was optional not compulsory, would lead to a faster and clearer result. Why would we not want a faster and clearer result ??? Why would we want a result that dragged out over days or longer ??? Because that would make it easier for the corrupt to manipulate the vote. And who would want that ??? Anthony Green ??? The elections expert most famous for having a computer which constantly breaks down. ( cue: cries from ABC-TV for more funding ). Imagine a count where you just showed your ID then voted for your party, you put a “1” in their box and X’d everyone else. You took a photo of your finished vote then tore off the receipt strip with your number. Then when you went home you looked up your chosen party’s tally on the website and found your vote number already right there in the total. Wow, you would know it was all legit. And so easy !!! No wonder Anthony Green and ALP hate to hear about very simple improvements like this to increase transparency, accuracy and honesty.
