Woolworths has defended its home brand label from criticism that it’s selling cheap imports.

Consumer group Choice says the two major supermarkets are increasingly stocking vegetables grown and packaged overseas.

In a survey of 360 private labels, it found 38 per cent of Woolworths’ and 55 per cent of Coles’ own brand groceries were Australian.

But Woolworths general manager of fresh foods, Pat McEntee, says two-thirds of the company’s processed foods are sourced locally, and says it’s working on new packs of Australian rice, olive oil and ice cream.

“70 per cent of our own brand products are manufactured here in Australia,” he said.

“And we’re working very hard to increase the amount of Australian grown and manufactured products within our own categories.”from ABC
