REALITY CHECK NEEDED BY CLIMATE DISCIPLES
Cosmic Cycles Control Climate
by Viv Forbes, Science writer
Those who think a war on carbon energy will lower Earth’s temperature need to study climate history.
Temperatures on Earth dance to a cyclical rhythm every hour, every day, every month, every season, every year, and to every beat of the sun-spot and glacial cycles.
These cycles interact to produce a wide range of ever-changing temperatures. Even at the same moment, temperatures vary dramatically from the equator to the poles and from the surface to the stratosphere. For would-be climate “managers” to claim they can calculate a mythical “global temperature” with precision greater than thermometers can measure is statistical nonsense.
It is even sillier for people who cannot accurately forecast next weekend’s weather to claim they can regulate the temperature of the globe by bashing industry and taxing carbon.
What is the role of carbon dioxide in climate? Al Gore did a great job to dramatise the recurring glacial cycles revealed by ice cores in his widely acclaimed work of science fiction. But he missed two inconvenient truths.
First, ice cores show that in the glacial spring-time the temperature rose BEFORE the CO2 levels rose. Therefore the rising CO2 cannot be a CAUSE of the warming – it is a RESULT of CO2 being expelled from the warming oceans.
Second, at the top of every warm cycle, high levels of CO2 in the atmosphere were unable to prevent Earth from cooling into the next cycle of ice.
We are fortunate to live in the Holocene Epoch, the latest warm phase of the Pleistocene Ice Age. The climate history of the Holocene, and its predecessor the Eemian, are well documented in ice core logs. These show that today’s warm Greenhouse Earth is probably nearing its end. It will be followed by Icehouse Earth.
There is no evidence in the climate records that carbon dioxide has a detectable effect on global temperatures. However if our continued use of cheap reliable hydro-carbon energy does slightly delay the onset of the next glacial winter, we and all life on Earth should count ourselves lucky.
Viv Forbes is a qualified geologist who has spent much of his life studying geological and climate history as written in the rocks. He has also spent several years in formal and private study of climatology and meteorology. He is the Founder of the Carbon Sense Coalition and a non-executive director of a small Australian company developing a coking coal mine.
By far the best reference book I have read on the above subjects is:
“The Inconvenient Skeptic” by John Kehr. This book is written in plain language, but full of sound science, well researched and referenced. I highly recommend it for those wishing to understand what drives our climate. (Hint: It is NOT carbon Dioxide.)
Another well-researched and easy-reading book on the long term cycles of ice ages and volcanism is:
“Not by Fire, but by Ice” by Robert Felix:

Napoleon once said: “Only a foolish horse fights with his nose bag”
by Viv Forbes, Science Writer
But today we have many foolish people fighting their nose bag. They are weakening Earth’s food chain with a war on carbon.
Carbon is the building block of life. “Organic” means “containing carbon” and every bit of plant and animal life is built around the carbon atom.
Carbon enters Earth’s cycle of life via plants, which extract it from the rare and precious carbon dioxide plant-food in the atmosphere. Living things use
this carbon, plus water, oxygen and minerals, to create the proteins, fats, carbohydrates and skeletons they need.
Plant growth responds quickly to the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
See: CSIRO: Rising Carbon Dioxide causes greening of the deserts:
The Biosphere is booming: CO2 is the Cause:
However, today’s levels are far below those that sustained the abundant forests, grasslands, wetlands, herbivores and carnivores of past eras.
The biggest long term threat to abundant life on Earth is natural carbon sequestration, especially during the recurring cold dry eras when cooling oceans absorb huge amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and growing ice sheets capture most of its water.
Nature is very efficient at carbon capture and burial. Enormous quantities of carbon and hydrogen have been removed from past atmospheres and buried under ancient sediments in extensive beds of coal, oil shale, limestone, marble, dolomite and magnesite, and in diffuse deposits of hydrocarbon liquids and gases.
The result is that the carbon dioxide level in today’s atmosphere is not far above the minimum needed to sustain plant life (which is why nurserymen pump more carbon dioxide into their green-houses).
However, in a rare piece of environmental serendipity, man’s extraction and use of coal, oil, gas, limestone and dolomite for power generation, transport, aviation, steel, cement and fertilisers is recycling a tiny part of this storehouse of buried carbon. For example, for every tonne of coal burned, 2.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide plant food plus one tonne of fresh water is added to the atmosphere; and producing one tonne of cement releases about one tonne of carbon dioxide.
See: The ins and outs of coal combustion:
Every tonne of wheat grown needs a tonne of carbon dioxide to get its carbon, and other foods have similar needs. Carbon industries thus help to feed all of Earth’s plants and animals.
See: Should we celebrate CO2: http://www.thegwpf.com/28155/
Industrial use of carbon-bearing mineral resources also recycles valuable trace elements like nitrogen, sulphur and phosphorus which are present in variable amounts in coal, oil and carbonates. Any of these by-product gases can be toxic if concentrated in confined spaces, and all of man’s activities can pollute crowded cities, but in the open atmosphere, plant life often suffers because of a deficiency of these key nutrients.
Those waging a war on hydro-carbons and carbon dioxide are enemies of the biosphere. Their foolish policies like carbon taxes, emissions trading and “Carbon Capture and Burial” are denying essential nutrients to the food chain. The failed global warming forecasts show that these policies will have no effect on climate, but will reduce the atmospheric supply of food nutrients and fresh water for all life on Earth.
Life is a carbon cycle – don’t break the food chain.

People send me things; lots of things – compliments, abuse, information and advice.
One correspondent is “Coochie” a wannabee grass-farmer who lives in town but reads all the latest stuff on managing grazing animals. He reads things like “Mother Earth” and “Stockman Grass Farmer”.
Coochie recently rebuked me.
“Please tell Farmer Fred that grazing animals are far better than ‘carbon neutral’. In fact they are the only hope for reversing desertification of the world’s grasslands and open forests. If managed properly, grazing herds will remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, reduce soil erosion, improve soil fertility and increase vegetative cover. They should earn ‘carbon credits’.”
I was all ears.
“You and Fred should study the work of Allan Savory. Allan is an observant honest ecologist who has spent his life worrying about desertification, which can be both a cause and a result of climate change. Initially, he hated grazing animals – he thought they were causing desertification and destroying his beloved wildlife.
“But a life-time of study of the whole system showed him it was neither the cloven hooves nor the animal numbers that caused desertification. The problem was how they grazed – how long, how intense. When hard-hoof animals are concentrated on small areas of land for short periods of time, they break up the hard crust and cover it with litter, dung and seeds. Then, when the herd moves on to seek new clean pastures, the abandoned areas recover quickly with improved soil and replanted pasture. This process restores the health of grasses and soil, returning much life-supporting carbon to the soil in the process.
“What turns grasslands into deserts is constant grazing by a few animals. Herds must be concentrated and moving.”
I insisted that Fred come over and listen to Alan Savory:
After he listened to it, Fred was stunned. He was always sceptical of our “funny ideas” on rotational grazing but suddenly he understood.
“Well, my boy” he said. “So much for all that rot from your Professor mate attacking us graziers and lauding soft-footed animals. It makes sense – soft-footed rabbits spread everywhere and destroyed everything with their constant nibbling; but one or two massive moving herds of bison, bunched and harassed by wolves and Indians and assisted by occasional fires, created the marvellous grasslands of the Prairies.
“Our cattle and sheep can be much more than grass harvesters and providers of periodic protein for people and predators. They can cultivate soil, prepare seed beds, spread seeds and mulch, and fertilise our grasslands and pastures in just one pass; but only if we concentrate them properly, and then give the pasture a decent rest-and-recovery period.”
“This Un-Savory chap will probably be expelled from the Deep Green Brotherhood for such blasphemy.”
Here is the climate shocker: “Rising CO2 is turning the world’s deserts GREEN”:
Moreover “Abundant Carbon Dioxide plays a Crucial Role for soil fertility and plant health”:
Coochie was ecstatic: “With plenty of plant-sustaining emissions from coal in the skies, and soil-sustaining emissions from cattle in the soils, then coal and cattle can paint the grasslands green again.”

Paris climate –fest(ering)
Make sure Australia’s delegates to the climate-fest in Paris in December get this message:
“Sign No binding Agreement in Paris
and put a ‘Get Out’ clause on anything proposed”.
This conference is NOT about climate or pollution – it is about world government and redistribution of wealth and power to UN agencies:
Viv Forbes has spent many years working in the mining, exploration, coal, oil, gas, cattle and sheep industries of Australia as well as in government service. He is a non-executive director and minor shareholder of a small Australian coal exploration company (which was founded after the Carbon Sense Coalition was founded), but he and his wife spend most of their time and energy raising meat sheep and beef cattle on natural grasslands. He was the founder of the Carbon Sense Coalition, which receives no encouragement or direction from Big Government, Big Coal, Big Oil, Big Green or Big Unions.
Recycling Burps and Farts
by Viv Forbes, science writer
Yesterday morning, before the frost had left the grass, I was sitting quietly beside my fashionably-green wood-burning heater reading the latest explanation in “The Green Gospel” on why the Arctic ice had not yet melted.
Suddenly Flora burst into the room like an Arctic Blizzard with a look on her face that said I was in big trouble.
“Did you tell that awful Professor Percival he could cut holes in Maria’s belly and leave her with a bum bag and a rubber sausage strapped to her back?”
(Can’t believe this is happening? See:
“It’s all right dear” I explained patiently, “The Prof has a new job researching how to stop sheep from adding carbon compounds to the atmosphere.” (Which means, translated crudely, “how to stop sheep from burping and farting”.)
“Well tell him to torture that awful Dorper ram that butts me, not my darling Maria. Where are those animal cruelty people when I need them”?
The Prof had coached me on the settled-science story which I now relayed confidently to Flora: “Sheep and cows release lots of carbon-rich gases from both ends. The science says this will affect the atmosphere, heat up the globe, melt the ice caps and we will all drown.”
“He is being paid big bucks to postpone that watery judgement day.”
Fred McNally, my crusty old neighbour on the other side, was not impressed with the Prof’s reasoning.
“Surely even a dopey hobby farmer like Percival understands the carbon cycle? Every sheep has two inlet pipes – one for food and water, one for air. And it has three exhaust pipes for wastes – liquid, solids and gases. Sheep cannot manufacture carbon. Every atom of carbon coming out of a sheep’s exhaust pipes must have come in via that sheep’s feed pipes. And every atom of carbon in the sheep feed must come from the grass which gets it from . . . the atmosphere.”
“Sheep live on recycled burps and farts. Along the way, lots of carbon is tied up in woolly jumpers and in the bodies of sheep, lambs, dingos and hungry humans.”
“Why pick on a non-problem like sheep? Wild dogs have already eaten half of Australia’s flock – we need a predator among the plague of clueless Professors.”
“Can’t the silly old fart see that all sheep are green?”
In the sanctimonious cant of those who preach the green religion, sheep (and cattle) should be hailed as “carbon neutral”.

Today, the Earth is not covered by a mile of ice; a safe conclusion is that there must have been a bit of global warming. I don’t know the cause of that warming, but I’d wager everything I own that it was not caused by coal-fired electric generation plants, incandescent light bulbs and SUVs tooling up and down the highways.”

Victims of Climate Wars seek Asylum in Asia.
People migrate when they are starving, fearful or oppressed.
Industries are the same.
At the same time that unhappy people are flooding towards Europe and Australia, the climate wars in those same countries are sending struggling business refugees to Asia. They are migrating as government promotion of expensive intermittent energy (wind and solar) and government taxes on hydro-carbon energy cause soaring electricity costs and falling profits.
The sad results of Europe’s infatuation with wind and solar energy toys are clear. Without Russian gas, French nuclear, Scandinavian hydro, North Sea oil, Iceland geothermal and German and Polish coal, the European green zone would freeze in the dark every winter. Green energy is not the solution – it is the problem.
Green Crash – Europe’s Power plants face closure:
Denmark is a wind energy poster-child. When the wind blows, electricity prices go into free-fall and surplus Danish power is exported to Scandinavia – at discounted prices. Then when the wind drops, the canny Swedes send hydro power back to the Danes – at peak prices. So, Danish wind power does indeed deliver cheap energy (at times) – but to Sweden. Scotland is treading a similar road and its last reliable coal-fired generator was closed last week.
Britain looks at a long cold future:
At the height of the solar energy bubble, the sunny Mediterranean countries spent their credit-worthiness in subsidising solar and wind energy. From Spain to Greece, they are now facing bankruptcy, and their industries are migrating.
German politicians illustrate the full spectrum of energy foolishness. They dream of closing their efficient nuclear and coal generators, while also becoming independent of Russian gas and banning shale gas exploration. No wonder their real industries are migrating.
German Government in Crisis over escalating cost of climate policy:
German industry investing outside Germany:
Australia is following Europe, just more slowly. Already much of our industrial base has migrated to Asia or plans to: metal smelting and refining, steel making, oil refining, car and tool manufacturing, weapons and equipment making, food processing and so on.
Australia is Becoming Green and Defenceless:
And, as green doomsters in developed nations also advocate dumping shares in hydro-carbon producing companies, smarter people are picking up these shares at bargain prices, so control and management is also fleeing from the climate wars to Asia.
At the same time, scarce capital in the green war zone is being frittered on UN schemes to inflict green energy on the third world.
UN wants $100b per year for climate funding for poor nations:
Future generations will look back in wonder at this futile expulsion of our capital, industry and jobs. It will not reduce CO2 emissions – just moves them elsewhere with not the slightest effect on Earth’s climate or biosphere.
India will rely on coal for future energy.
Where Does the Carbon Dioxide Really Come From?
Professor Ian Plimer could not have said it better!
If you’ve read his book you will agree, this is a good summary.
PLIMER: “Okay, here’s the bombshell. The volcanic eruption in Iceland . Since its first spewing of volcanic ash has, in just FOUR DAYS, NEGATED EVERY SINGLE EFFORT you have made in the past five years to control CO2 emissions on our planet – all of you.
Of course, you know about this evil carbon dioxide that we are trying to suppress – it’s that vital chemical compound that every plant requires to live and grow and to synthesize into oxygen for us humans and all animal life.
I know….it’s very disheartening to realize that all of the carbon emission savings you have accomplished while suffering the inconvenience and expense of driving Prius hybrids, buying fabric grocery bags, sitting up till midnight to finish your kids “The Green Revolution” science project, throwing out all of your non-green cleaning supplies, using only two squares of toilet paper, putting a brick in your toilet tank reservoir, selling your SUV and speedboat,
vacationing at home instead of abroad. Nearly getting hit every day on your bicycle, replacing all of your 50 cent light bulbs with $10.00 light bulbs…..well, all of those things you have done have all gone down the tubes in just four days.
The volcanic ash emitted into the Earth’s atmosphere in just four days – yes, FOUR DAYS – by that volcano in Iceland has totally erased every single effort you have made to reduce the evil beast, carbon. And there are around 200 active volcanoes on the planet spewing out this crud at any one time – EVERY DAY.
I don’t really want to rain on your parade too much, but I should mention that when the volcano Mt Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991, it spewed out more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than the entire human race had emitted in all its years on earth. Yes, folks, Mt Pinatubo was active for over one year – think about it.
Of course, I shouldn’t spoil this ‘touchy-feely tree-hugging’ moment and mention the effect of solar and cosmic activity and the well-recognized 800-year global heating and cooling cycle, which keeps happening despite our completely insignificant efforts to affect climate change.
And I do wish I had a silver lining to this volcanic ash cloud, but the fact of the matter is that the bush fire season across the western USA and Australia this year alone will negate your efforts to reduce carbon in our world for the next two to three years. And it happens every year.
Just remember that your government just tried to impose a whopping carbon tax on you, on the basis of the bogus ‘human-caused’ climate-change scenario.
Hey, isn’t it interesting how they don’t mention
‘Global Warming’ anymore, but just’Climate Change’- you know why? It’s because the planet has COOLED by 0.7 degrees in the past century and these global warming bull artists got caught with their pants down.
And, just keep in mind that you might yet have an Emissions Trading Scheme – that whopping new tax – imposed on you that will achieve absolutely nothing except make you poorer. It won’t stop any volcanoes from erupting, that’s for sure.
But, hey, relax…… and have a nice day :>)”
