IT’S no accident that Sydney and London both have a location called Speaker’s Corner. It has long been considered a sacred right under English law in British Commonwealth jurisdictions that public speaking, and in particular political speaking, is a sacred right. Without the right to speak we are little more than slaves.
So it’s entirely appropriate that a rally to oppose the Federal Government’s draconian Misinformation & Disinformation Bill is held at a location with a long tradition of honoring the right to public speaking.
Speaker’s Corner Sydney, opposite the NSW Art Gallery, features soapbox speakers every Sunday from 2pm until 5pm. The rally to expose Albanese’s brazen legislation clamping down on freedom of speech on the internet will be on Saturday the 28th of this month, September, from 11.30am.
The rally is being organised by Sydney Libertarians and former Liberal MP Craig Kelly has his name down as one speaker. The Libertarian Party, by the way, has an excellent website full of great ideas and projects, and has managed to get candidates elected in NSW city and country council elections, most notably Camden, where they hold the balance of power.

Back in the day (mid-late 60’s) I used to go to Speaker’s Corner, Hyde Park regularly. It was usually a lively affair, especially when the commo/ leftists’ got in full flight, often ending up in a free-for-all with half empty beer bottles flying and a bloody, busted nose or two (the coppers used to hide inside Marble Arch – there was a police post there – so were never far away). Happy and fairly free, days.
In Sydney, in the 70’s, our Speakers Corner in Hyde Park had its moments but faded away over the years and last time I looked, just picnickers & lovers. And as Seinfeld would say, nothing wrong with that. But a venue for free speech, Mmmmm.
So if Craig Kelly – a hero of mine, will be there on the 28th, I’ll try to be there too, walking stick, busted nose an’ all.
Who knows. With ever increasing censorship on freedom of speech, Speakers Corner might be our last stand. Resurrect it: use it or lose it.

They had one in Melbourne too in a paddock opposite Richmond train station, I don’t know where the original one was but probably a lot closer to the middle of town. They have a nice little park called Treasury Gardens next to the Vic old Treasury building which would be a good spot and it has a JFK memorial next to it too for a reminder what happens when you talk too much
