The announcement of the delay in the 3G network shutdown is welcoming news for the rural, regional and remote communities as it gives more opportunity to ensure their health and wellbeing is not compromised.
“We are pleased that the government and the industry heard our calls for the delay through our and other stakeholders’ voices and submissions to the Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee inquiry into the 3G shutdown,” said the National Rural Health Alliance Chief Executive Susi Tegen.
“This is an acknowledgment that the voice of the 7 million people in rural, regional and remote Australia has been listened to, allowing more preparation and support where needed, in time for the changeover.
“While we welcome the decision to delay the shutdown, we urge the telecommunications industry to use this extra time to work with the Minister for Communications the Hon Michelle Rowland MP to ensure that those without coverage are supported financially as well as from a digital literacy perspective,” Ms Tegen added.
“We have highlighted on many occasions that the impact of the 3G network shutdown is amplified for people living in rural, regional and remote areas due to the limited availability of healthcare services and the heavy reliance of 3G-enabled medical and other devices.
“Many would risk losing access to triple-zero due to the use of older mobile phones that only support 3G networks.
“We appreciate the government and industries working on these concerns and we are committed to watching closely how the situation unfolds in the upcoming months,” Ms Tegen said.
The National Rural Health Alliance (the Alliance) comprises 53 national organisations committed to improving the health and wellbeing of the over 7 million people in rural and remote Australia. Our diverse membership includes representation from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health sector, health professional organisations, health service providers, health educators and students.

It has been delayed til 28 October and I already have my dumb phone picked out.
FYI… Does anyone use their phone for banking or pay for purchases? My daughter has been using the Combank app for banking on her phone. Her fortnightly pay went in on Tuesday and last night she had all her money stolen.. they took it in 500 pound lots and it all went in about 10 minutes to Amazon UK. She spent all morning at the bank today. She lost $4000 AUD.
I had been telling her for awhile that its stupid to use your phone for any kind of financial dealings.. I had only said recently that she should not use her phone for that. Digital is not to be trusted in any way at all.
Hopefully they will get the money back for her depending on how fast they get onto it all. She reported it straight away on the App and rang the bank, waited for an hour before they hung up on her… The number on the app person that she called told her that the card was cancelled after first lot of money disappeared and a new card issued, and the rest of the money went off that NEW card within 10 minutes -during the phone conversation they asked for her email address…She pinged straight away that perhaps they were not the bank, and said no, that they should know that. Is the app corrupt? Even the bank guy that she spoke today was puzzled about how it could have happened.
Just beware… Now begins the onerous task of opening new bank accounts, getting a new phone, new phone number, changing her pins and passwords.. etc… and she will not use this same phone again now as she feels it is not safe.
I cringe every time I see someone swipe their phone at the supermarket… are they crazy? Of course this is what they want people to get used to.

I’ve been using a telstra reseller called CMobile and have had a great little plan at $10/month for 100 free minutes (incl 1G data but I don’t use that). then the price went to $12/month last year. Now the reseller has received notice from telstra that as of Sept 1st (the date 3g was supposed to be gone), all mobiles through telstra and their resellers would need to pay for a min of 5G of data per month, even if you don’t have a ‘smart’ phone. This brings the phone up to $20 /mth for data I won’t be using. shutting down 3G has nothing to do with better service….
Here is my opinion on phone recharges, having tried many providers over the years.
It comes down to how you operate your phone, what for, and where.
1. Hands down, Telstra provides the best coverage city and country.
2. Optus and Vodaphone have much more limited coverage in the country regions. This is not a problem if typically if you are in a built up area and rarely stray from built up areas or main highways, ie dont need nav maps out in country areas for example.
You can get a Telstra-provided service, without the Telstra premium pricing, by using one of their resellers such as Amaysim, or Woolworths Mobile.
However, resellers are not the same. AMAYSIM is the cheapest, however have a reduced service level in country areas. ie some Telstra base stations dont allow themselves to be used by AMAYSIM subscribers.
Woolworths Mobile, is a full service Telstra reseller, ie same call access as direct Telstra subscribers.
Now, prepaid or post paid?
Postpaid accounts are generally for hi volume users, typically professionals
Woolworths
Prepaid you have options of monthly direct debit to credit card, or to purchase a voucher from the auto-checkout registers or the operated checkout tills.
With Woolies prepaid, vouchers/monthly costs have a range of prices, however, even the cheapest monthly cost of $25 has basically an unlimited call limit, plus free calls to about 10 different countries, and a certain amount of data allocation. So unless you are a heavy data user then this $25 top-up would be all it costs to run the phone. Otherwise select a plan with a higher data allowance.
AMAYSIM, you have a prepaid yearly option, and cheaper monthly top up plans, but you get less data and calling options, and less country coverage. If you are city-bound, dont make too many calls or used much data, then AMAYSIM would be the go, ie a glovebox phone for emergencies.

zzz3856 – Regarding a faraday cage – I have been using one since late 2021 based on all my research at that time. It is a military grade. I always have my mobile in there unless I need to use my phone. Sometimes I get a call while it is in there and sometimes it doesn’t ring. I can even tether to laptop with phone in cage.
I previously had a pixel (google) phone until the face cracked – bought that brand before I was awake and now I have switched to an older Nokia phone – still a smart phone though.
As I have already said below, I don’t think the 5G phone is really a 5G phone. And isn’t it strange the switch over is delayed? I don’t think enough people in the country are bothering to switch to a new so called 5G – and the telcos will lose customers. However, the closer you use the phone to your head, body etc the more radiation you are subjected to and the phone could be used as a weapon and tracker. The biggest problem here is the 5G towers – right next to shopping centres and schools. This is the real weapon that can be deployed to make people sick. i.e. the huge amount of 5G towers switched on in Wuhan created people to collapse and fall over in the videos we saw.
In addition the 5G military grade towers are installed to create a grid for robots and drones etc. I do not believe that is going to happen now as their agenda and narrative is being smashed by the worldwide military alliance – so not to fear. Also, I discovered that most of the towers have been sabotaged by the white hats and will not create the 5G invisible beams that are toxic to humans, animals and plants.
I say, just be aware of the globalists using technology to infiltrate you physically and mentally with continual sysops being played out. And minimize exposure from it by shielding and grounding – feet on earth daily for at least 10 minutes to release the positive charges inflicted on your body in the world we are living in – unless you are off grid away from all technology? I’ve been using Aspera ‘dumb’ phones forever. I still have an Aspera F26 for 3G and I will use that until the day 3G is shutdown. It only cost $65 so I bought a couple extra so that I always have spare fully charged batteries and it has lasted donkey’s years.
I have purchased Aspera’s F48 which is a 4G model but it is just sitting there in reserve until it is actually necessary. It cost c. $68.
Reminder: they don’t have to turn it off at all.
This is just to force people into a certain direction.

dianadraytonbuckland… What a coincidence. I was just reading another article just now which mentioned dumb phones and I am going to get one – they are pretty cheap too, especially the Nokia. I don’t use my phone as a computer, I have a laptop for that.. so I only want talk and txt and maybe with camera. Actually I did read that if you get one with GPS, it is trackable so I can do without that too.
There lists of different dumb phones on the net. Time to get back to basics. I have been told I have to get another phone, so I will get one of these.

I have been looking, but the end of 3G capable was as far as I can see, the end of phones that dont have bluetooth, dont have WiFi, and dont use digital cellular data, dont have GPS providing GPS location data.
So, I am curious. What is the make and brand of your dumb phone?

My husband and I have dumb phones – they only send and receive text messages and phone calls.
We cannot afford to have our mobile phones on the internet and we only have them on pay as you go and only use ‘when absolutely necessary’.
All this technology is a ‘monster’ way out of control and there are allegedly ‘monsters’ at the ‘controls’ and it’s terrifying what has been and is being done to the people.
3g and 4g seem to still work perfectly, so why is there supposedly a need to upgrade the technology to 5g? The answer so that Telstra and other tech giants have a new income stream. We definitely do not need 5g with its radio frequency, radiation danger to health and track and tracing ability.
Last year I bought a new computer and did not use it immediately. When I did eventually set it up, guess what? No landline port, only can use with wi-fi, another dangerous, unneeded concept.
I thought the idea of a free and competitive market, free enterprise, was to supply the services that the people required, not what we are forced to have to enrich big business. If business cannot supply goods at a price that people are not willing to pay then take it off the market. Or if people don’t want to use a particular product in numbers making that product profitable, again don’t bring it to market. I am sure if people had to pay cash for these essentially not needed products, many would not purchase.

I have a 2019 Pixel 3a phone, locked in settings to 4G, however now each time I make a call I get a recorded voice announcement saying that my phone wont work from 1/9 as it doesnt support VoLTE.
So, basically, those in this situ need to have their firmware (phone operating software) updated. OK for phones, but a disaster for all those bespoke, specific use designed medical devices, emergency help devices that now require not only a firmware upgrade, which is not easily done or possible on many of these devices, due to lack of hardware support, or not enough memory to take the upgraded firmware, so a complete hardware replacement being necessary.

I was one of those lucky Telstra customers that was told my account would be closed as I needed to upgrade to 4G or 5G as the 3G network is closing. I checked my mobile and said it was 3G and 4G compliant. Yet when I went into a local Telstra shop the girl said yes but you might only have emergency numbers allowed. I checked my settings in front of her and I selected 4G, yet she maintained it won’t work for normal calls. I thought this is BS. Anyway I thought I’ll just wait and see what happens.
It also reminded me of a video I watched online of a mobile technician. He opened up an expensive popular 5G MOBILE PHONE – I can’t remember the brand – and looked inside. I’m sure everyone would have come across this video. He said this phone is marketed as 5G yet inside it DOES NOT have a 5G chip or capability of 5G. He claimed this is a SCAM so people will pay more money for 5G mobiles. So in fact he proved 5G mobiles don’t exist!! Why am I not surprised. What else did they say exists, that is a lie, mhmm, let me think?
