Labor’s Queensland Community Safety Bill 2024 (the Bill) will provide police with unprecedented powers in relation to social media. There is a real need to ensure that this complex bill does not result in unintended consequences for innocent third party viewing or publishing of content. There is also real concern that the Bill also exposes Queenslanders to the prospect of penalties that may affect their ability to maintain their livelihood, based on their ‘associates’ on social media.
The Shooters Union and KAP member for Hinchinbrook Nick Dametto have condemned the bill and described it as a devious attempt by Labor to try and sneak in gun law changes to the parliament under the disguise of a ‘community safety’ bill.
“What was first promoted as a bill that would make some positive changes to youth crime, such as the removal of detention as a last resort, was very quickly discovered to be just another assault on the rights of those law-abiding firearm owners in our community,” Mr Dametto said.
“I’m just as outraged about the contents of the bill as I am about the egregious lack of time afforded for public consultation and feedback.
“Industry representatives and stakeholders such as Shooters Union were given minimal consultation in the lead up to the bill and that didn’t even cover the entirety of changes that were going to be proposed. It was misleading to say the least and affront to the parliamentary process.”
Even though I sigh with despair at how any previous petitions for serious matters like fluoridation and injections, pesticides and many more have been useless – I will still try and help with this Petition by spreading the word – these people actually put a full page advertisement in the mainstream media newspaper with the headline ‘community control and safety bill struck out with a big red X – it was never about your safety….When this many different groups raise concerns, you know something is very wrong’ (and it had a long list of groups).
