Fires started by batteries and users getting injured from battery explosions are becoming almost a daily event especially as more and more batteries come onto the market.
Electric vehicles have featured in car explosions and fires consequently car carriers and shipping have refused to carry these vehicles describing them as ‘bombs’.
Senator Roberts said lithium battery fires have featured prominently far too often in news headlines.
“These fires often ignite without warning, they’re difficult to extinguish and are not confined to #EVs. Everything from eScooters to electric toothbrushes carries the risk for #thermal runaway and considered hazardous materials,” he said.
“I asked about the ACCC’s report on Lithium-Ion Batteries and Consumer Product Safety during the recent senate estimates. The report advocates for a national product safety incident database to capture lithium ion battery fires.
“Senator Gallagher responded positively and I look forward to quick action on this problem from the Government.”

No problem! Once we’ve been converted to EVs it’s simple enuff to ban them with no alternative available for most of us.
Presto! 15 minute Smart Cities here we come!
It was painfully evident that Gallagher was struggling to grasp the ideological or electoral significance of the question. Eventually, it dawned on this sociopath that the issue has jurisdictional elements and that is where her staff will be directed to go for resolution.
That human safety is the primary issue, closely followed by radial property damage issues, went right over this airhead’s apology for a head. Any driver or passenger in a car containing a lithium battery is at risk of horrific if not fatal burns. But this risk extends to adjacent vehicles and bystanders, and to entire populations of buildings within which such a vehicle or tool is stored; or is host to, regardless of time frame.
In rural regions, as Betty Mac pointed out, such a fire can have disastrous consequences. Farms and stations have many vehicles stored or on standby whilst the family or community is going about its business, possibly kilometres away. These uncontrollable fires can spread and consume vast areas long before containment forces can arrive.
At the very least, and as an interim safety measure, all firefighters will need to record lithium battery combustion details and refer these up the chain of command to state and territory fire chiefs, who can then collate data for examination by a responsible federal government. Yikes.
We have not had a responsible or responsive federal government for some fifty years, so the Australian community needs to grab the initiative and proselytise the reality that lithium batteries are Australia’s most salient safety issue at present. We need urgently to contact our fire chiefs and plead that they seize the initiative and get this fireball rolling. If this does not happen now, there can be no doubt that tragedy is on the horizon. Albo’s clowns will never act.
We need also to consider that use of lithium batteries may need to be heavily regulated or even curtailed. Such a decision has massive human and economic consequences and the subsequent national conversation must be impervious to lobbies. The sole criterion must be safety. Penny Wong, take note.
We live in a rural area where fires are a constant EXTERNAL threat!
Now we find we should be more worried about INTERNAL fire threats?
When is something going to be done about this?
We have had the states head fire fighter on TV news warning people of the danger of these batteries causing fires. It is not just EVs but EVERYTHING which has a lithium battery from power tools to vacuum cleaners ,they must be monitored carefully due to their extreme potential to burst into flames and burn down your house
