Texas allows guns in college classrooms under new law | 01 Aug 2016 | A new law went into effect in Texas on Monday that allows certain students to bring guns into classrooms, with supporters saying it could prevent mass shootings and critics saying the measure will endanger safety on campuses. The so-called state “campus carry” law allows people 21 and older with a concealed handgun license to carry pistols in classrooms and buildings throughout public colleges, including the University of Texas system, one of the nation’s largest with an enrollment of more than 214,000 students.

Suspicious toolbox sparks controlled explosion inside Rio stadium | 01 Aug 2016 | A controlled explosion has taken place inside the Maracana Stadium in Rio, just days before it is set to host the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. Authorities sent in a robot to investigate a suspicious toolbox on Sunday where rehearsals for the games’ curtain-raiser had already begun. When the robot touched the toolbox, it exploded.

At those concentrations, swimmers and athletes who ingest just three teaspoons of water are almost certain to be infected with viruses that can cause stomach and respiratory illnesses and, more rarely, heart and brain inflammation – although whether they actually fall ill depends on a series of factors including the strength of the individual’s immune system.

However, local, state and federal health officials are continuing their investigation, which includes going door-to-door to ask residents for urine samples and other information in an effort to determine how many people may be infected. Additional cases are anticipated.
Gov: 4 Zika cases likely came from Florida mosquitoes | 29 July 2016 | Florida’s governor said Friday the state likely has the first cases of Zika transmitted by mosquitoes on the U.S. mainland. Gov. Rick Scott said during a news conference in Orlando that no mosquitoes in the state have tested positive for Zika. But he said one woman and three men in Miami-Dade and Broward counties likely contracted the virus through mosquito bites. More than 1,650 Zika infections have been reported in the U.S., but the four patients in Florida would be the first not linked to travel outside the U.S. mainland.
1,000s Turkish forces surround NATO’s Incirlik air base for ‘inspection’ amid rumors of coup attempt | 31 July 2016 | Some 7,000 armed police with heavy vehicles have surrounded and blocked the Incirlik air base in Adana used by NATO forces, already restricted in the aftermath of a failed coup. Unconfirmed reports say troops were sent to deal with a new coup attempt. Hurriyet reported earlier that Adana police had been tipped off about a new coup attempt, and forces were immediately alerted. The entrance to the base was closed off.

U.S. court strikes down North Carolina voter ID law | 29 July 2016 | A U.S. appeals court on Friday struck down a North Carolina law that required voters to show photo identification when casting ballots, ruling that it intentionally discriminated against African-American residents. The ruling, a victory for rights advocates that will enable thousands of people to vote more easily, is also likely to be seen as a boost for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton going into the election on Nov. 8. The court’s decision also canceled provisions of the law that scaled back early voting, prevented residents from registering and voting on the same day, and eliminated the ability of voters to vote outside their assigned precinct.

Senior Democratic National Committee officials resign – DNC | 02 Aug 2016 | Three senior officials with the Democratic National Committee have resigned, the DNC said on Tuesday, amid a shake-up following a hack of thousands of emails that embarrassed the party just as it staged its national convention last week. The resignations of DNC Chief Executive Officer Amy Dacey, Communications Director Luis Miranda and Chief Financial Officer Brad Marshall were announced by interim Chairwoman Donna Brazile.
NSA has Clinton’s deleted emails, whistleblower claims | 02 Aug 2016 | The National Security Agency has Hillary Clinton’s deleted emails, and the FBI could access them if it wanted to, a former NSA official claimed in a radio interview. William Binney, an architect of the NSA’s surveillance program who became a whistleblower when he resigned from the agency in 2001, made the claim on Aaron Klein’s Investigative Radio Sunday. Klein also reported on Binney’s comments for Breitbart dot com. Binney pointed to 2011 testimony by then-FBI Director Robert Mueller before a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in which Mueller said the agency has access to “sophisticated, searchable databases” to track down terrorists.
