Where two rivers meet. The junction of Australia's two longest rivers, the Murray and the Darling

By Ron Pike, Murray Darling Basin expert

Ron Pike warns southern Australia could soon run out of water

In the evocative words of Martin Luther King junior. “I have a dream.” It is a dream I have had for several decades. It is a dream that could so easily be real. It is a dream that could dramatically lift Australia’s productivity. It is a dream that could make Australia a more secure country. But government inaction makes it a continuing mirage.

My dream is that on this the driest inhabited continent on earth, we would build dams on most of our rivers. These dams would have multiple purposes. They would store excess water in times of flood flow. Reduce flood damage, release water in dry times for irrigated agriculture and produce low-cost hydropower. Mankind has yet to find a better way of doing this than building dams, but in Australia we have not built a dam for over forty years. As a result, as we now appear to be entering an overdue drought and our major dams are all around 50% of capacity. We will run out of water by the end of summer if there are not greatly increased inflows.

It is now over forty years since we built our last dam, which was Wivenhoe Dam on the Brisbane River. During the intervening period our population has grown by over twelve million people. This is another reason we are headed for water shortages and likely very severe shortages. The time for dam building is NOW. Starting with not one but several. Most of the preliminary work on siting and size has been completed for years and construction could start soon. Preferably, today.

If it does not and we continue into a drought cycle, then much of southern Australia will be drastically short of water this summer. This will initially affect annual crop irrigators like rice, corn and cotton growers. It would quickly lead to rationing of water to other users like grape and fruit growers. The results would be large scale employment lay-offs in regional centres.

This in unison with rising interest rates will plunge Australia into a prolonged recession.

A recession that most present-day politicians could not manage. The “lucky country” would become the doomed country. Previously thriving communities would become welfare recipient slums. With our major dams in the south now sitting on an average of 53% and the irrigation season due to start in the next month and now likely snow-melt being very low, it is not surprising that “general security” allocations are presently only 22%. Unless there is a soon to be announced large increase in this figure, there will be widespread lay offs as the production of rice, corn, cotton and vegetable crops drop dramatically.

I do not believe that either the Federal Government under their unconstitutional Murray Darling Basin Plan, or the NSW State Government have any plans to prevent this potential disaster.

How do we better manage the water resources we have?

We begin by recognising that Commonwealth intervention in water management was always unconstitutional, unnecessary and counter-productive. The Federal Water Authority should be wound up and water entitlements held by the environmental water holder, should be sold back to end users in the valley from which they were purchased.

We then set about constructing the dams we should have been building over the last forty years. In no specific order these dams are now urgently needed.

The Welcome Reef dam on the Shoalhaven River, to secure Sydney’s water supply.

A dam and a weir on the Mitchel River to guarantee Melbourne’s water supply.

The Chowilla Dam on the Murray to harness this vast resource.

Implement the Bradfield Scheme on the Burdekin River in Queensland.

A dam on the Namoi River and several weirs on the Darling River.

Many more are needed and planning and assessment should start now.

The Federal Government should stop chasing the “Rainbows” of climate change, AI and implement real, needed policy that will provide future generations with reliable and cheap power and water. They are and always have been the catalysts of production.

The people will do the rest, Australia will prosper and my dream will come true.

  1. Australia doubled it’s population in a 20 year or so period at a time when they were talking about water shortages every year… and not doing anything about it. You can’t say that was incompetence. That was by design – and you let them do it to you, too! Now you are copying Europe and have Muzz everywhere. Not too bright Down-under, are ya!

  2. And They still intend to nearly double Australia’s population to 47 million – by stealth !!

  3. Whether they let it flood, shine, or prevent any rain & precipitation etc.
Weather is being created/ manipulated on a worldwide scale, which is all about TOTAL control & dominion, Agenda 2030, including their so-called ‘Great Reset’.

All in LOCKSTEP of what they’ve triggered over Europe etc…

  4. Well, since the “governments” we love have decided that we don’t need dams, People need to take things into their own hands to ensure they have water. At the very least, put a huge tank on your property. In my area, for the past 4 months, bores have been drilled day and night. Was non-stop for the first couple months (damn noisy but who cares), now they work from early morning until late arvo- EVERY DAY. ALL our rivers and the dams on the farms are all FULL. Pipes are run from the bore down to the dams to ensure they are kept full at all times. It’s now been a while since I saw an empty dam. WE have to take action. And then, collectively, stand our ground if and when the “:$#@ try to tax us for the water we collected or tell us to hole up the bore. We all need to be together because they like to take one down at a time.

  5. Truth is that you cannot control a people while they have the means to help themselves.

Wasn’t it the Victorian government who banned growing your own vegetables at one time?
Instead of encouraging people, we just keep them entertained with footy and with scandals and make them too busy otherwise to even think. This is not a new tactic.
And you strive to keep equal – at the point of killing initiative. And you put high achievers in jail.
    .
Yes, keep them busy, keep them lean but entertained and don’t bring in fertiliser. And never dam.
And sell off what you have instead of value adding.
Or have massive fires. It amazes me that the news occasionally (occasionally meaning rarely),comes out that the fires have been started by arsonists. Over 400 arsonist attacks in the Canadian fires. Less in other countries, but the damage is the same. Or the water mains are turned off. Have you been hearing this?
    .
And just a little bit of info here. I think it was the Amish (I am open to correction), who found that
wee wee was a perfect fertiliser. I know that lemon trees love it.
Just a note here. I am not advocating that you stand outside and provide it. Otherwise in this day and age, I might end up in jail for encouraging public exposure.
From the sublime to the ridiculous, perhaps men charged with exposing themselves were really only fertilising the shrubs around them.
    Any Lawyers listening?

  6. The horrible BOM and their shallow minion Seaman Staines wiggling around on ABC-TV talk up the el Nino la Nina in excruciating detail never getting so far as to explain WHAT DRIVES THESE CYCLES, they are complicit in the big lie, they call “AGW” anthropogenic global warming. It’s a lie.
Go to spaceweather.com and you will see the sun’s 11 year cycles laid out in front of you, we are entering the cooling phase, it will bottom out in about 6 years. This is most likely the last hot year. Look elsewhere for real climate not weather cycles and you’ll see the warmer climes produced the Roman Empire, the Viking expansions and … the current growth cycle which has gone on since the mini ice age around 1800 AD. Warm weather is good and CO2 is good plant food, it makes all the trees grass seaweed etc grow and the entire ecosystems live because of wonderful excellent magnificent marvellous CO2. 7. English style toilets are no good, the toilets in Thailand are much better, probably use about half the water.
Don’t laugh, Dicktator Dan was having everyone rip out their gas stove and change to electric, what a mental case.
English style lawns are not appropriate in Australia, think of something else, here’s an idea, crops.
Fill your yard up with tomatoes potatoes pumpkins whatever and then swap them with the neighbours.
Best of all government will hate these ideas as there is no globalist directive, kickback or post-political career in it.

  8. The BOM is reporting that Australia will experience its wettest year yet now that El Nino is on their radar , Victorian western district graziers have not seen any rain lately and they don’t expect any soon so the BOM will look like El Nincompoop.

  9. Editor Cairns ews said – “… Cattle producers rely on cottonseed meal after processing which is about 20 per cent protein. It also produces cottonseed oil for human consumption…”
    .
And creepy Bill and baby-eating Bourla produced “safe & effective” BIOWEAPONS for animal and Human consumption too, for ALL of us whether we liked it or NOT. Are you feeling LUCKY?
    .
    .
And Editor Cairns News said – “… China, India and the US are much bigger cotton growers than Australia…”
    .
Well let’s get things in perspective shall we?
    .
From the Brave Search AI Bot…
    ====================================================================
The top producing nations and their approximate shares of global output include:
    .
China: ~29% (approx. 35.8 million bales or 7.5 million tonnes in recent forecasts)
India: ~20–22% (approx. 23.8 million bales or 5.1 million tonnes)
Brazil: ~15% (approx. 18.75 million bales or 4.1 million tonnes)
United States: ~11–12% (approx. 13.9 million bales or 3 million tonnes)
Pakistan: ~4% (approx. 5.3 million bales or 1.1 million tonnes)
Australia: ~4% (approx. 4.5 million bales or 980,000 tonnes)
    ====================================================================
    .
So China produces ~8x, India ~5x and the USA ~3x as much cotton as Australia.
    .
And Australia produces 4x more cotton than the USA, 7.5x more cotton than China and 12x more cotton than India PER CAPITA.
    .
But what about actual EXPORTS of raw unprocessed cotton, folks?
    .
From the Brave Search AI Bot…
    ====================================================================
The top exporters of raw cotton by volume in the 2024/2025 period are:
    .
Brazil: Exported approximately 2.68 million metric tons (27.8% global share)…
United States: Exported roughly 2.53 million metric tons (26.2% global share)…
Australia: Exported about 1.26 million metric tons (13.1% global share)…
India: Exported approximately 490,000 metric tons (5.1% global share)…
Turkey: Exported around 305,000 metric tons (3.2% global share)…
    ====================================================================
    .
And now let’s examine the OTHER END of the industrial equation…
    .
From the Brave Search AI Bot…
    ====================================================================
China, India, and the United States are the world’s leading producers of cotton yarn and cloth.
    .
China dominates global textile manufacturing, accounting for 26.4% of world cotton yarn production and 25.7% of cotton cloth production… India follows as the second-largest producer, contributing 21.0% of global cotton yarn output and 14.2% of cloth production…
The United States ranks third in yarn production (14.7%) but significantly less in cloth manufacturing (4.2%)…
    ====================================================================
    .
Meanwhile, what’s Australia’s position, right up there in the TOP 6 world cotton PRODUCERS and No. 3 EXPORTER, in the world heirarchy of cotton textile manufacure?
    .
    Answer – ZERO.
    .
Just like nuclear and coal and gas power and oil refineries and steel smelters and electronics and any sort of modern manufactured goods, folks, including CARS and AEROPLANES and HOME APPLIANCES and EVERYTHING ELSE. We don’t “make” stuff here in Australia, folks, our sold-out paid-off fake CORPORATE “government” GIVES all our shit away for OTHER countries to live in comfort and wealth and prosperity while they all make stuff and then we BUY IT BACK.
    .
Did you know, folks, that Australia was the THIRD country on Planet Earth to successfully design, build and launch our very own SATELLITE into orbit, after the Soviet Union and the USA? At the end of Exercise WWIII Australia was an industrial GIANT, we were self-sufficient in EVERYTHING, we had the 4th largest Air Force on Earth and the largest and most capable navy in the Southern Hemisphere, we had a thriving Aircraft Industry and car manufacturing industry and our own SPACE PROGRAM before ANYONE ELSE.
    .
Where has all of that gone, folks?
    .
Yeah, that’s right, you know where. Because these sold-out paid-off foreign-owned anti-Australian baby-eating mass-murdering TREASONOUS mongrel arsehole BASTARDS don’t work for us and they don’t answer to us, their job is to DEMOLISH what we THOUGHT was our country and KILL US ALL.
    .
And it ain’t gonna do any of us any good to be reminiscing about Australia’s former Glory Days while the baby-eating BASTARDS are running the show and wrecking the joint and feeding us all to the Vampires. There’ll be plenty of time for reminiscing AFTER Mr. Rope and Mr. Lamp Post ride into town to set things RIGHT.

  10. HI Pat todays cotton varieties are bio-manufactured unfortunately and have been engineered to grow on far less water that cotton of 20 years ago. The Tablelands has grown dryland broadacre cotton crops successfully without irrigation. Cattle producers rely on cottonseed meal after processing which is about 20 per cent protein. It also produces cottonseed oil for human consumption.
China, India and the US are much bigger cotton growers than Australia. Ed

  11. Ron Pike… my hero..!! He is beating the same drum that was sounding loud & clear 50 years ago by men after his ilk… ignored then in the echelons of power… and even more so today. A land of plenty crying out for men of wisdom & foresight to step up & act.!!

  12. I have a fantastic idea

    this will help

lets build more data centres – water no problem
while we are at it lets give land away to foreign countries so they can build military tech – cause thats a bright idea!
while we at it lets sell all the rest of the civilizational assets without any authority – cause its not like the profits of these assets kept the economy strong!
lets also create another constitution to completely ignore and then manipulate everything around it within complete corruption of the civilizational decree!
impose more death taxes while we are at it, so we can tripple dip people effectively turning every single cent they earn into a debt
we dont need baseline power so lets stick few more battery farms up so they can explode and use more water – we have plenty of water!
hey lets shut down the last oil refineries alongside with it cause we dont need them at all

  13. Hey folks,
    .
Here’s a question for everyone – why in HELL is a DESERT CONTINENT like Australia committed to growing an environmentally poisonous pesticide-dependent insatiably water-hungry crop like COTTON?
    .
Of course, the question is rhetorical, just like so many other philosophical questions in this democidal circus run by genocidal sold-out paid-off baby-eating CLOWNS, because have you noticed, folks, there ain’t no small farms or home-grown family businesses growing cotton cash crops, it’s the exclusive precinct of BIG FOREIGN MEGA-COMPANIES just like most everything else in this THIRD WORLD COLONY masquerading as a “country”.
    .
Here’s a quote from the Brave Search AI Bot – “… Australian cotton production is a high-value agricultural sector where 99% to 99.9% of raw cotton is exported, as the country has no domestic spinning mills. Australia ranks as the world’s third-largest cotton exporter, contributing approximately 3-5% of global production while achieving yields nearly three times the world average…”
    .
Did you get that. folks? Just like coal and LNG and Uranium and Iron Ore, COTTON is one more RAW RESOURCE that’s exported by Australia TO THE WORLD, Australia is one of the WORLD LEADING EXPORTERS of COTTON, but just like all those OTHER things it’s ILLEGAL TO USE THE FRIGGING STUFF right here in Australia! Just like coal-fired power plants and oil refineries and nuclear power plants and steel mills and any OTHER viable energy production or manufacturing capability, we DON’T GOT NO COTTONG SPINNING MILLS, not a SINGLE ONE, not anywhere at all across the vast expanse of this ENTIRE CONTINENT.
    .
And just as an ASIDE here folks, just to press the point HOME, do you remember the retired doctor in New South Wales who tried to start an exquisitely environmentally responsible sustainable Hemp farm that required hardly any water and NO PESTICIDES all those years ago? That’s right, he got ARRESTED and they BURNT HIS FARM DOWN. Hooray!
    .
Australia is being RAPED and POISONED and DEHYDRATED by MULTINATIONAL MEGA-CORPORATIONS to spew out COTTON for the benefit of the industrial prosperity of OTHER COUNTRIES which get all that cotton without ANY of the far-reaching insidious COSTS of its PRODUCTION. It’s the AUSTRALIAN landscape which is being POISONED and STARVED and DESSICATED and BLED DRY to feed those mountains of FOREIGN PROFIT.
    .
In the midst of all this fake foreign-owned corporate “government” MALFEASANCE and MALEVOLENCE and TREASON against Australia and its people, the author Mr. Ron Pike laments the lack of foresight and action and failure to build all the dams that might MITIGATE the DAMAGE and SUFFERING from all these decades of ECONOMIC and INDUSTRIAL MISMANAGEMENT, but he’s off the mark, folks, WAY off the mark, because that’s EXACTLY what these corrupt foreign-owned sold-out paid-off baby-eating mongrel arsehole BASTARDS are PAID TO DO.
    .
They don’t work for us and they don’t answer to us, folks, their job is to DEMOLISH our country and KILL all of us. Mr Pike spins a lofty tale of all the good things that they COULD be doing to make Australia a better place for Australians, but those are all things that these MONGRELS have been studiously and meticulously and relentlessly and deliberately NEGLECTING and AVOIDING and OBSTRUCTING and BANNING for DECADES, so WHY START NOW?
