To those relatively familiar with the chronological systems of the time, there is no real mystery behind the ‘three hours darkness,’ as all it refers to is the standard three hour adjustment period for the re-synchronising of the three hour fast clock with the Sun: – as previously discussed.

Over the course of fourteen years, not only did the annual clock become disjointed from the Sun, – but also the diurnal clock, which was now three hours fast.

The way the priests dealt with this, was to leave the observatory’s removable 12 noon roof segment where it was, at the time when the Sun said 9 a.m., thus, filling the temple with ‘three hours of darkness’ from between 12 noon until 3 p.m. (non-adjusted clock time).

During the daytime hours, the Jewish priests kept time in the vestry-temple via a procedure involving the removal of accurately Solar aligned roof panels. The vestry’s floor was then divided into cubits, with each cubit measuring one hour. The continued succession of hours was measured by a priest standing on every successive cubit, both observing the progress of the shadows whilst offering prayers of the same length. This traditional procedure gave the accuracy of a clock.

At precisely 12 noon, a segment of the roof was removed, thus, allowing the congregation below to see the priest at his prayers on the roof above. When the half-roof was removed – ‘a great light shone down’ [as described in other passages].

Strabo also records, how the Gallic priestesses used to roof and un-roof their temple-observatories in a single day (Geography. Book IV. 4-6. Strabo). Its just how things were done in the ancient world.

The four gospels reveal major discrepancies regarding the timing of these events, and especially the divergences of John and Mark, which was due to their known adherence to the Hebrew and Hellenist calendars respectively. For example.

‘And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour (i.e. 9 a.m. true Solar time, – but 12 p.m non-adjusted clock time): saith unto the Jews, Behold your King. . . . Then delivered he him therefore to be crucified. (John. 19: 14-16). [N.B. In the Jewish system, the sixth hour was measured from the ‘cockcrowing’ watch at 3 a.m.].

‘When the sixth hour (12 p.m. true Solar time) was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour (3 p.m.. true Solar time).’ (Mark. 15: 33). [N.B. In the Hellenist system, the sixth ‘daylight’ hour was measured from sunrise at 6 a.m.].

The alleged darkness spreading over the land for three hours on this particular day, was merely an allegorical reference to the afternoon’s three hour time adjustment via the traditional roof closing device and the associated three hours of darkness experienced within the temple. When performed simultaneously throughout the regions local temples, the three hour period of darkness was said to be spread throughout the whole land.

This is no different to when we adjust our watches to different time zones, or move our clocks forward or backwards for daylight saving time.

However, the most significant aspect of the day’s diurnal clock adjustments relates to the all important Sabbath.

As the Sabbath starts at sundown, where in this particular intercalation year, – the Sabbath started on Friday, 20 March, at around 6 p.m. So for those who had already adjusted their clocks, Christ was removed from the cross at 3 p.m., whilst for those who had not yet done so, – it was 6 p.m., due to its coinciding with the Vernal Equinox on March 22.

So for the latter group (i.e. Caiaphus’s priests), there was an urgent rush to remove Christ from the cross before the Sabbath started at 6 p.m. (unadjusted clock time)- exactly as the gospels describe, – where much to Pilate’s amazement, Christ had died so quickly!.

But for the other group, – who had adjusted their clocks, – they still had three hours to prepare everything, – whilst the first party had already retired to their Sabbatical retreat. Just as the gospels recount.

So there’s no real mystery in all this.

I very much doubt you have any acceptable qualifications in this highly specialist area?

As Passover is a Jewish festival, – I think the answer is rather obvious?

As its Good Friday weekend, some readers may find it interesting?, – as to what was going on at this time in A.D. 33, – in the vicinity of Jerusalem. A quick history lesson so to speak.

To begin with, beyond their superficial lay readings, the Pesher coded (i.e. the initiated readings) Gospels and Acts do in fact supply an exact and detailed chronology for every important historical event from 9 B.C. to A.D. 63.

Due its pivotal importance, the Pesher provides an exceptionally detailed account of Christ’s crucifixion rite: – hour by hour.

As the various sectarian calendar systems (i.e. the S, SS, InterS, NS, NLS, and SLS) form the underlying foundation of the Gospels and Acts chronologies, as well as providing the means for their cross-referencing, it is only via a thorough understanding of these systems that a proper dating of the related events can be properly determined.

With the Solar calendar (S) being the dominant system, the Jewish priests responsible for the formulation of these celestial based calendars, soon realised, -that over a period of fourteen years the calendar moved out of line with the observable movements of the Sun.

To rectify this separation of Heaven and Earth, every fourteen years the Jewish calendar had to be re-synchronised with the solar movements due to its falling behind the Sun by 420 hours, or 17.5 days (2.5 weeks).

This fourteen year intercalation resulted with the Jewish calendar’s so called changing from Day (6 AM) to Night (6 PM).

As the dates of the Solar calendar were on fixed days, the intercalation changed the days on which the date fell, hence, the pre-intercalation day of Tuesday 31st at 6 AM (Day) was moved forward 17.5 days to the intercalation day of Friday at 6 PM (Night), – thus becoming Friday 31st at 6 PM.

This arrangement would remain as such for the next fourteen years, when the succeeding intercalation would change the calendar back to Tuesday 31st at 6 AM (Day), – and so on.

In addition to the standard 17.5 year intercalation, there also existed the variant intercalation of 2.5 days every two years. This was the Lunisolar (NLS and SLS) method employed by the Herodian aligned Pharasee astronomers, and of course, – the High Priest Caiaphas.

According to this 2.5 day intercalation, the regular pre-intercalated Passover (14a/1) of Tuesday 17 March at 6 AM (Day),- was now moved to the intercalation day of Thursday 19 March at 6 PM (Night): – this being the correct date for the Passover of A.D. 33.

Hence, it was not by random chance, that the year of Christ’s crucifixion in March A.D. 33, coincided ‘perfectly’ with the intercalation year, – and not only the intercalation year, – but the ‘exact days’ of the intercalation.

Christ would drop yet another clue as to what was being ritually reenacted, i.e. – ‘After this [ritual crucifixion], Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture (i.e. Psalms. 22: 16) might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.’ (John. 19: 28)]. Thus, bringing the prophesied ritual to its conclusion.

Viewed from the contemporary Roman Julian calendar, the intercalation placed the Last Supper on Thursday 19 March at 6 PM: i.e., – the commencement day of the intercalation, followed by the trial and ritual crucifixion on the following day, Friday 20 March, A.D. 33 (Passover Friday): – the finalising day of the intercalation.

Furthermore, due to the calendar’s time separation from the Sun, over the course of 17.5 years the clocks also became 3 hours too fast, so it was noticeable from the Sun’s movements, that although the priests ‘clock’ (1) said it was 12 noon, the Sun’s position said it was really only 9 AM.

It was because of the priests necessary adjustment to their clock, why ‘three hours of darkness’ occurred on Good Friday: the day in which the intercalation of the Jewish calendar was taking place.

It was also for this reason, why from 12 PM of Thursday 19 March until 3 PM on Friday 20 March (Good Friday), that a set of ‘double-hours’ was in operation.

In consequence, the priests (birds) of the nocturnal watches, known as the ‘Ravens’ (9 PM to 12 PM watch) and the ‘Cocks’ (12 PM to 3 AM), were temporarily working with the watches of the two clocks.

As the pre-intercalated clock was three hours fast, when the ‘Cocks’ issued their pre-intercalated ‘cockcrowing’ at 3 AM, this was then followed three hours later (i.e., the non-intercalated 6 AM) by a second ‘cockcrowing,’ – due to the post-intercalated clock having been put back three hours to 3 AM, – hence the double ‘cockcrowing’ on that particular night, when there would normally only be one. Being thoroughly aware of all this, Jesus issued the following statement, – ‘before the cock crows twice, you will have denied me thrice’ (Mark. 14: 30).

Although too numerous to discuss, the rest of the details surrounding these events are truly fascinating to say the least: especially the actual location.

With this year’s Good Friday currently falling on 18 April, we can now appreciate why the intercalations were necessary features of ancient priestly life.
