A New Zealand dairy cow demonstrates the latest methane mitigation device, a built in Bovine Bum Igniter (BBI). Scientists are still working on a burping device.
Former MP and Farmers Federation president Owen Jennings.

ACCORDING to Professor David Frame, director of the New Zealand Climate Change Research Institute (NZCCRI) at Victoria University of Wellington, methane from Kiwi ruminants contributes four millionths of 1 degree annually to “rising temperatures”.

But Owen Jennings, former ACT Party MP and and former Farmers Federation president, told the Greenwashed program on RealityCheck Radio, that number was “wildly exaggerated” and more recent research showed it was closer to 1.2 millionths of a degree. In something of an understatement, he said the weight of information going out on farm emissions had been “slanted towards people who haven’t got a particularly useful view towards the rural community”.

Referring to a Farmers Weekly editorial by Prof. Frame, Jennings said a close examination Frame’s numbers “not my numbers, not the Methane Accord* numbers” suggested that the amount of warming, the actual temperature rise that came about in his view from ruminant methane in New Zealand was four millionths of a degree per year.

But Jennings rejected the number and citing more recent investigations by scientists including Prof. David Coe, Fabinsky, Sheahen and several others, he said “they’re more inclined to say it’s about 1.19 millionth of a degree per year”. “Now I know that’s absurd and ludicrous, but essentially that’s where we’re at,” said Jennings.

“We’ve more or less said the science tells us that there is no problem, that New Zealand’s contribution is nil. What we’re now doing is fighting politics. We’re fighting the politics of the Greens who are yelling that we need to get rid of cows, sheep and ruminants. We’re fighting people who think the world’s going to end. Well, get a life.

“The world’s got a great self-correcting mechanism. The planet’s shown over millions of years that if it encounters a cycle or a problem with rising temperatures or falling temperature or different conditions, it’s got a great self-correcting mechanism. Go back to sleep … it’s not a worry.”

Jennings went on to say that farmers actually had a sound case for ruminant methane to be excluded from any measures taken against greenhouse gases. He said farmers used CO2 in producing methane and no-one else had that luxury, and it annoyed him that media and scientists were using outdated 1990 data to claim the farm methane pool was increasing when the opposite was true.

But the problem remained of farmer organisations being overly focused on “mitigation and so-called science and technical breakthroughs that are supposed to be coming”. There was still not enough focus on what the real problem is, he said.

“Nobody stopped and said hey what’s the problem and what’s the nature of this problem and what’s NZ’s contribution to this problem?” There was also the view that New Zealand was a small country in a world where everyone else was fighting fossil fuels and climate change so therefore they couldn’t buck the system.

Jennings said New Zealand farmers, in a nation of 5 million people, was now feeding 40 million people with it’s exported farm produce, but green bureaucrats and politicians had been pushing for a 20 per cent cut in sheep and beef production and 5 per cent for dairy.

“Why? Why are we depriving people of the very essence of life, food. It’s time we got serious about some of this stuff and stood up for ourselves a lot more strongly for ourselves as food producers feeding hungry people.”

Greenwashed co-host Don Nicholson, also a former Federated Farmers president, said the new coalition policy still focused on fixing an alleged problem with methane and avoided dealing with the issue of whether there really was a problem.

*Kiwi farmers fighting this issue through various action groups have formed the Methane Science Accord, an organisation calling for zero taxing of ruminant methane and noting the International Panel on Climate Change’s AR6 Report “making clear that new science states ruminant methane’s warming ability is exaggerated by 300 to 400%.”

  1. daviddd2 said – “Just attach it to the Alphabet goulash.”

    The alphabet does impose limits, eg –

    S = Sitophile
    S = Schediophile

    … what to do, what to do?

    daviddd2 also said – “The more inclusive the better.”

    Tempting…

    U = Undead
    V = Vampire
    W = Werewolf
    X = Elon Musk
    Z = Zombie

    … but that’s just being silly.

  2. Aussiemal: “It is a known fact that most vegetable only eating animals have larger bodies for intake and digestion, compared to the human species. And their brain capacity is much lower.

    Brain capacity is much lower? Correction! Demonstrably and indisputably MUCH, MUCH lower. lol

  3. Aussiemal said – “… their energy supply from vegetation is nowhere near that supplied by the relative size of the meat product…”

    This is not strictly correct, even as a generalization.

    Fat has the highest energy density, followed by protein, followed by carbohydrates. FWIW, the heart’s preferred energy source is fat. Protein metabolism for energy comes at the cost of toxic byproducts which the body has to eliminate, compared to carbohydrates which “burn clean” to produce CO2 and water (that’s why someone living exclusively on fruit and veges might not even need to drink at all).

    And all of these things CAN be sourced from both animal and plant origins. People living in tropical zones are blessed. People in other zones – not so much. We can only dream of the abundance enjoyed by Humanity before the Flood.

    And there’s a whole encyclopaedia of nutrients the purpose of which don’t neatly slot into the simplistic mechanistic fat/protein/carbohydrate paradigm.

    But none of that shit is necessary to acknowledge the legitimacy of animal-sourced nutrition for Humanity. It is what it is, and within the limits of ethical allowance, we get to choose. Naysayers – either go and get a life, or go and get stuffed.

  4. Pat from Vic: “Adding “E” to signify “Eunuch” might cause problems, seeing as how we also have to make room for an “Extraterrestrial” category.”

    No drama. Extra terrestrials are already recognised as ET. Just attach it to the Alphabet goulash. The more inclusive the better.

    And speaking of inclusivity, some day they might even include S for STRAIGHT, possibly including the overwhelming majority population.

  5. Animal Whisperer: “When a psychiatrist was asked why do meat eaters hate vegetarians and vegans so much the response was: they know in their subconscious it is wrong.”

    The psychiatrist is a fool and needs his own psychiatrist. I eat meat and I couldn’t give a rat’s arse about hating or loving vegetarians or vegans.

    Quit fantasizing, leave people alone and leave them to eat whatever they choose. Forcing your opinion or morals on me will invite me to hate you whether you’re a vegetarian, vegan or a carnivore.

    I have both a conscious and a subconscious inherent dislike of pretentious dkheads. Tell that to your psychiatrist.

  6. I like to remind vegans that for some 25.000 years or more, Aborigines and their predecessors ate meat because this continent, indeed the entire southern hemisphere, is deficient in carbohydrates, forcing the inhabitants to seek alternative fats.

    For example, a major source of carbohydrate is the long yam, yet its energy value is absorbed by more then 30% activity just in locating the tell-tale tri-winged seed pods in the three branches, tracing the vine to the ground, digging carefully around it so as not to damage the upper root stem, removing 900 mm depth of earth from around the tuber, then digging a shallow cooking basin, locating and cutting paper bark to protect the food, collecting firewood and lighting the fire in the earth basin to heat the rocks or termite mound material laid beside the food, and then covering the meal with leaves, then earth until cooked, then the work of uncovering carefully to avoid grit contamination, and consuming.

    Hunter-gatherer food consumption is hard work and occupies all one’s daylight time. The fat around some organs and in some flesh is much easier and less energy-intensive to obtain. But this is how southern hemisphere hunter-gatherer’s survived. If they were vegetarian, they would have become extinct millennia ago.

    This imbecile whisper is welcome to forbid Aborigines from hunting and gathering meat, fish, small mammels, shellfish, crabs, and so on, and I hope he does not take umbridge at the digging stick slammed across his face, by a grumpy old lady who has learned that it is a waste of time being diplomatiic with crazy white people.

    On second thoughts, I lie. I would encourage the old lady to finish the job.

  7. Perhaps those that go along with the idea of non meat eating are also the drones in the political arena and public service who expend no real energy in their lifestyle. Meat and fish products are where most energy to humans is acquired from apart from sugar which creates other health problems.

    A human requiring energy to be involved in our world needs a supply of energy to function. If the “ape” family were required to put together bridges and buildings the time span to finalise such projects would be much longer, as their energy supply from vegetation is nowhere near that supplied by the relative size of the meat product. At the same time the life span of the “ape” family is shorter than that of humans.

    It is a known fact that most vegetable only eating animals have larger bodies for intake and digestion, compared to the human species. And their brain capacity is much lower, a very important factor.

  8. It seems to me most people are unaware that trees, plants & vegetables all have feelings and they communicate with each other, I remember being in the Redwood Forests of Northern California, we pulled over to wander among the trees, we felt this almost overwhelming feeling of sadness. It was the result of the clear felling of Redwoods in British Columbia. I later learned the Redwoods communicate through their roots and they are all connected from California to British Columbia. These maniacal greenies need to get a grip of reality, especially those that believe Crude Oil is Fossil Fuel, It is Abiotic a naturally occuring fluid under the Earth’s crust and is the second most abundant fluid, after water, on the Planet. Prove me wrong!

    B = Bisexual
    T = Transexual

    M = Medieval (Sex with Demons – Incubi and Succubi)
    O = Objectum (Sex with inanimate objects)
    + = Whatever other shit you want to add on (and all with Penny & AnAL’s blessing).

    Adding “E” to signify “Eunuch” might cause problems, seeing as how we also have to make room for an “Extraterrestrial” category.

    Thankfully, we have Fantasy Land over there at Disney World to manage this evolving New World Order.

  10. @Animal Whisperer, I didn’t bother reading your comment. I’ve read some of your comments and know you live in the Twilight Zone, even though weirdly you presume to hold others accountable to the Ten Commandments while disavowing the Bible yourself, and cast meat eaters as the mortal enemy of vegans.

    In my peripheral vision, I fleetingly suspect Animal Whisperer said – “If you don’t like my opinions… scroll past…”

    Roger that.

  11. @Pat, I didn’t bother reading your comment. I’ve read some of your comments and know you support killing others, even though weirdly you also act as though you are Christian but if you were Christian you’d know and follow the Ten Commandments.

    @Ed I don’t have to join anyone I don’t need a tribe or others to validate me. I don’t agree with a lot of what those groups do anyway. Pagans ate meat so that remark makes no sense other than to breed a hate for Pagans. Hindus don’t eat meat, they are not Pagan.

    Not everyone believes in the bible stories either. When I see someone walk on water and turn water to wine I might reconsider it wasn’t written to control and deceive people.

    When a psychiatrist was asked why do meat eaters hate vegetarians and vegans so much the response was: they know in their subconscious it is wrong.

    If you don’t like my opinions and views no need to attack, scroll past, this is a place that supports freedom of speech and opinion is it not?

  13. vadmagyar: “and how much contribute to the (non existent) “global warming” John Kerry’s 6 houses 12 cars 2 yachts and a private jet – for one single ass and hole.”

    Something must be done about the filthy rich single asses and holes that are wrecking our countries, our lives and our world. They are all known yet permitted to ply their deadly self interest projects with impunity.

    see:

    “World’s super-rich wreaking ‘death and destruction’ on the planet – Oxfam”

    “The carbon emissions of the wealthy will cause 1.3 million heat-related excess deaths, according to a new study… ”

    “The richest 1% of the world’s population produced more carbon pollution in 2019 than the poorest 66%, anti-poverty charity Oxfam has revealed. It is the most recent year for which data is available, according to a report released on Monday.

    “The research showed that the group of about 77 million people, including billionaires, millionaires, and those paid more than $140,000 a year, were responsible for 16% of global consumption emissions in 2019, which is more than all car and road transport emissions, Oxfam claimed.

    “Their outsized emissions will cause 1.3 million heat-related excess deaths, roughly equivalent to the population of Dublin, Ireland, the report says. Most of these deaths will occur between 2020 and 2030, it adds.

    “The super-rich are plundering and polluting the planet to the point of destruction, leaving humanity choking on extreme heat, floods and drought,” said Amitabh Behar, Oxfam International interim Executive Director.

    “For years we’ve fought to end the era of fossil fuels to save millions of lives and our planet. It’s clearer than ever this will be impossible until we, too, end the era of extreme wealth,” Behar noted.

    “The report indicated that it would take about 1,500 years for someone in the bottom 99% to produce as much carbon as the richest billionaires do in a year.
    READ MORE: 125 billionaires have carbon footprint the size of France – Oxfam

    “Oxfam calculated that a 60% tax on the incomes of the richest 1% would cut emissions by more than the total emissions of the UK and raise $6.4 trillion a year to pay for the green energy transition.

    “Not taxing wealth allows the richest to rob from us, ruin our planet… Taxing extreme wealth transforms our chances to tackle both inequality and the climate crisis,” Behar concluded.

  14. Animal Whisperer said – “Animals should not be consumed by humans fullstop.”

    This is a comedy setup, a comedic device, right? Reminds me of the Greengrocer waving her whopping big melons at me.

    If God wanted us to eat veges, then why did he invent Butchers?
    … (cue sound of raucous mooing and clucking in the background)…

    But let’s be serious…

    The closest anatomy to the Human body in nature happens to be the Orangutan (not the Chimpanzee or Gorilla, as some might imagine). And the Old Man of the Forest is understood to be a “fruitarian” – the vast bulk of their diet is fruit. Even Gorillas are strict vegetarians, FWIW, while Chimpanzees will eat anything, it seems (there’s a species of Chimpanzee in the Congo the size of Gorillas, which the locals call “Lion Hunters” – they’re known to hunt, kill and eat lions, although they apparently display no hostility to Humans).

    So that gives a clue as to what Humans might have been designed to eat. Mostly fruit.

    Let’s consider History. Before the Flood, Humanity was forbidden to eat the flesh of animals. That’s back in the day when the Earth was covered in tropical rainforest, teeming with all manner of amazing creatures on land and in the sea and sky above, and a fantastical abundance of fruiting and medicinal plants drawn straight out of Fantasia.

    However, AFTER the Flood, the world was a changed placed, a shadow of its former self, so desolate by comparison that God made it known to Noah that thenceforth, Mankind was permitted to eat the flesh of animals – a testament to the total destruction wrought by the Flood, and to the supreme adaptability of the Human body.

    BUT as you infer, it was (and is) necessary for Humans to process meat by cooking it, because our metabolism is not naturally suited to a carnivorous diet. Natural Selection (perhaps an occasionally valid process) may over the centuries have led some Human demographics to require meat in their diet.

    Jesus gave us some guidance on what might be best, living as He did on a Mediterranean diet including fish and occasional livestock, perhaps best described as condiments in a largely vegan diet rather than staples, in much the same way as the long-lived Hunzas in the mountainous regions of Pakistan.

    Although we eat them, it’s right and proper to have sympathy and empathy for our animal brethren. Sister Anne Catherine Emerich said that Jesus visibly flinched when cutting the throat of the Paschal Lamb for the Passover with His Disciples. Recall also the culture of the American Indians, regarding their hunting quarry with respect and gratitude for the life it so gifted to them.

    In that vein, IMO the factory livestock and poultry and seafood production methods employed by so-called industrial societies are abominations, and produce toxic material that hardly qualifies as food, all raping and destroying Nature for the glory of Mammon. Far better the good life of small-scale natural farming and fishing communities for everyone including the animal populations.

    As for the push to consume raw meat and blood, there’s a certain cult that’s been eating babies and drinking their blood for millennia, and still do – more a religious devotion than a nutritional regime. All consistent with creepy Bill’s lab-grown HUMAN CELL LINE cancer-tumor fake “meat” and ground cricket burgers – all so very Satanic and contrary to anything that God might have intended for Humanity, even after the Flood which in itself was a regrettable necessity.

    All part of their drive to kill everyone, including all the animals, and create Hell on Earth. Which is what all the “climate change” BS and “climate crisis” hysteria is directed toward – when the only “crises” are being manufactured by THEM, to enslave kill all of US.

    The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Best to all be on the same page with this.

  16. Owen Jennings

    “We’ve more or less said the science tells us that there is no problem, that New Zealand’s contribution is nil. What we’re now doing is fighting politics. We’re fighting the politics of the Greens who are yelling that we need to get rid of cows, sheep and ruminants. We’re fighting people who think hope the world’s going to end. Well, get a life.

    They don’t want a life in this world Owen, They prefer to exist as horribly morbid, humanity loathing doomsayers, dragging our whole society and the rest of us down with them, while they hope to die very soon.

  17. Reincarnation does not apply to human spirit or souls being reincarnated as an animal. Man was created in the living image of God not animals and as Jesus ate animal flesh so do his mankind. You should should join the Pagans of Animals Australia with that horrible woman Lyn White and Sarah Ferguson of the ABC who were responsible for the economic destruction of the industry and several thousand Australian cattle producers by paying off Indonesian abattoir workers to abuse Indonesian bred cattle then claiming they were Australian cattle and then blame Australian producers and force the dopey Labor Minister Joe Ludwig to close it down overnight ultimately causing dozens of suicides throughout the industry. Better still join up with the dykes of PETA and start a campaign to stop the mRNA vaxx of livestock. Now that is real cruelty. Editor 3

  18. Animals should not be consumed by humans fullstop.

    If you haven’t worked out that you were conditioned to support the murder and consumption of defenseless animals then this may be the time to look into it.

    Not so long ago a new conditioning took place. It used to be that meat was cooked, and it was cooked all the way through. This reversed and they made people believe that it is better to eat meat raw (blue), and almost raw (rare). They have now successfully conditioned people to enjoy and desire the taste of blood and uncooked flesh. This was done through cooking shows, chef education etc.

    All the marketing around the Aussie BBQ, Lamb on Australia day, Pork for Christmas…. Thousands of advertising dollars into creating the social acceptance.

    People have been decensitised to murder and programmed to support murder. It does not matter what species, a life is a life.

    The programming goes through generations with parents unknowingly brainwashing their children to grow up thinking it is normal. To have no empathy for certain animals. It is a reducing/removing of empathy, compassion, kindness and love. It’s been done with humans relating to animals and it’s now happening with humans relating to humans. To create psychopaths and narcisists.

    People have been conditioned to believe animals are stupid, unfeeling and unintelligent. They are not. They are no different to us, except in species. If people took time to ‘reeducate’ themselves by spending a lot of time with, and observing, animals they would discover this.

    People are no longer neanderthal hunterer and gatherers with limited options. They have many choices yet still choose to support the inhumane practice of animal slaughter and consumption. Why?

    If you are an animal eater you believe you have the right, that you are superior to animals. Who gave you that ‘impression/implanted idea’? With that mindset you must accept that whoever is more powerful can control the lives of those less powerful. It is hypocrisy to state anything other.

    No need to blame animals for humans stupidity and cause more harm to them just stop eating them. Do it for your own soul, nothing else.

    Ask yourself, if there is reincarnation, would you like to come back a cow, sheep, lamb, fish, chicken etc. to be bred and killed for human consumption? I’m sure every sane person would say no.

    Then you should not support the industries.

  19. Recent UK and Greek studies confirm that the reverse of what we are being sold is true. Increases in temperature cause an increase in CO2, NOT THE REVERSE!

  20. Meanwhile the sun contributes probably well over 90% of climate, the occasional volcano etc making up the rest. This one minute long NASA video is date stamped so you can see the climate cooling from 2010-2020 which it did. The ABC-TV would not be allowed to show this, and anyone daring to run it would be sacked immediately.

  21. I can only conclude from the absolute stupidity of the garbage they are throwing at us is that they are playing with our minds. Keeping us occupied and affronted with baseless nonsense. Trouble is, there are those that will believe it. The best solution is to ignore it and not give it oxygen.

  22. Hi Eds. Hope all is ok up Cairns way, from the ABC.

    “We would’ve gone today but because of the circumstances, you don’t want to be an impediment, you want to be an assistance.

    “So we will certainly see first-hand when that is feasible and appropriate.”
