A trust fund has been created in the North Queensland to help investigate the development of irrigation near Cloncurry.

At a community meeting last night, a working committee was formed to look into the potential for diverting water from the Cloncurry River to irrigate 7,000 hectares of land north of the town.

State Member for Mount Isa, Rob Katter, says the next step is to bring in engineering expertise.

“The main thing is to get some formal studies done, from a planner or someone involved in engineering who is experienced with water development, to take some ideas and concepts and put that into something tangible that can be progressed from there,” he said.

“The main one they are talking about is off-stream storage, so that can only mean creating wealth, jobs and industry in the region.”
