A mountain fell down in the Himalayas. Within hours, prominent voices on the left were on their knees confessing our climate sins.
It was not one voice, it was a chorus. Claudia Webbe, a British MP, posted footage of the flood tearing through a Nepali town, noted that Nepal produces a tenth of one percent of the world’s emissions, and delivered the verdict: we did this.
Yassamin Ansari, a sitting United States Congresswoman from Arizona, called it “the climate crisis” and pivoted straight into an attack on Trump and Republican tax breaks for oil companies, as if a mountain in the Himalayas had been waiting on a congressional vote in Washington.
Nazia Kazi, an academic with a large following, went further than either of them and stated outright that the collapse was caused primarily by, her words, “EuroAmerican consumption and military activity.” Her post cleared twenty thousand likes.
Human Rights Watch, an organization some Americans still imagine as sober and careful, told its followers that communities least responsible for climate change once again bear the brunt of its impacts, folding a specific mountain collapse into a general indictment of our failures to grab enough solar panels.
Four voices. A British Parliament seat. A U.S. congressional seat. A university professor. One of the world’s most prominent human rights organizations. All four reached the identical conclusion within hours, before the death toll had stabilized, before a single seismologist had finished reading the data. Not “China did this.” Not “geology did this.” They went straight for “We did this.”
This is what happens when empathy stops being a virtue and becomes a liturgy. Toxic empathy does not ask what happened. It asks who to blame, and in this ecosystem the answer is never actually “humanity.” It is always some version of us, meaning our country, the West, and anyone else who has not yet sufficiently bowed to the new religion they adhere passionately to. In these posts, China is not “us.” India is not “us.” The nations currently expanding coal capacity fastest on earth never make it into the confession, because the confession was never really about carbon.
But first, what happened?
On the morning of August 26, a mass of ice and rock detached from a slope high in the Himalayas in Langtang National Park, Nepal, near the border with China, above 16,000 feet. That collapse sent a wall of water, mud and debris down the Lhende Khola into the Bhote Koshi and then the Trishuli, wiping out bridges, hydropower stations and entire riverside settlements in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, and crossing into Tibet downstream. More than 470 are confirmed dead across Nepal and Tibet. Well over a thousand are still missing. The number will climb.
Here’s what the confession booth missed. When the collapse happened, seismometers picked up a signal. Scientists initially read that signal as an earthquake, magnitude 4.4, and Nepal’s own foreign minister told parliament the quake likely triggered the disaster. That is the version that shot around the world in the first news cycle, and it is the version Claudia Webbe and most retweeting her were operating on.
It was wrong. The U.S. Geological Survey has since revised its assessment. There was no separate earthquake. The seismic signal researchers picked up was the mountain collapsing. A glacier and the rock beneath it let go, and the sheer mass of that failure registered on instruments the way an earthquake would, because at that scale a mountain falling down and an earthquake produce a similar signature.
The trigger was not seismic activity striking a fragile slope. The trigger was the slope itself giving way, a mechanical, geological failure, at over 16,000 feet, on Nepali soil. I am not arguing that warming cannot destabilize glaciers, permafrost or mountain slopes. It plainly can, over years and decades. I am arguing something much narrower: that nobody had established, within hours, that warming caused this particular collapse, on this particular day. What is not in dispute is what those four prominent voices claimed anyway: that this specific event was something “we” did.
That collapse did not just trigger the disaster. It became the disaster. The ice-rock avalanche fell into the river below and temporarily dammed it, and when that natural dam failed, the stored water and debris came roaring downstream through Rasuwa and Nuwakot. This is not a new pattern in that valley. In July 2025, a supraglacial lake on the Purepu Glacier, on the Tibetan side of this same river system, suddenly discharged and devastated the same general river corridor, an event Nepal’s own government documented at the time.
The 2024 Thame flood further east followed a similar script. In July 1981, a glacial lake called Zhangzangbo let go on the Tibetan side of this exact same river, the Bhote Koshi, and took out the Friendship Bridge and the Sun Koshi hydropower diversion weir. I was a baby when that happened.
Nepal did not determine the cause until I was five years old, when a report finally traced it back to that lake. It took four years to find an answer with no theology attached to it. This time it took the confession booth about four hours. This terrain has been producing these failures long before anyone turned them into climate headlines.
Even the outlets making the climate case acknowledge the distinction. The trigger was the glacier and rock collapse. The mechanism was avalanche, temporary dam, dam failure, flood. The background conditions are where warming might genuinely belong, since decades of thinning glaciers and degrading permafrost can destabilize a slope over time.
But a background condition that makes some failure more likely somewhere, eventually, is not a demonstrated cause of this failure, on this mountain, on August 26, and the same outlets making the climate case say attributing this specific collapse to warming would go beyond the available data.
A British MP, an American Congresswoman, an academic with a large following, and a global human rights organization had no trouble closing that question within hours, before the death toll had even stabilized.
That is the tell. When the people with the instruments and the training say we don’t know, and the people with the platforms and the guilt say we did this, you are not looking at science being communicated. You are looking at a theology being enforced. Every disaster becomes original sin, and the facts arrive too late to matter because the retweets already happened.
I have watched this pattern for years and it is always the same shape. Plastic pollution chokes rivers in Southeast Asia that never had functioning waste collection to begin with, and somehow the villain is a plastic straw in an Ohio Applebee’s. America causes a tiny fraction of the global oceanic plastic pollution, but it is our fault when mountains of trash from China and India appear. Sin is universal in this theology, but it only ever has one address.
There is another hypocrisy underneath these posts. The people lecturing the West about its carbon footprint are themselves beneficiaries of the fossil fuel economy they condemn. We can and should notice that the people typing on their smart phones from the airport lounge aren’t treating carbon emissions as something they personally should tamp down. That is not disqualifying in terms of speaking about policy. But it ought to produce some humility before declaring, within hours of a death toll still rising, exactly whose sin this was.
Say climate change belongs somewhere in the causal chain here, the slow background kind, not the trigger. Fine. Follow that logic, and notice who disappears from the sentence. Climate responsibility is not one number. You can measure cumulative emissions, current annual emissions, per capita emissions, or consumption based emissions, and each tells a different story.
America can be criticized on the cumulative measure. China, responsible for roughly a third of the entire world’s CO2 output and still adding coal capacity faster than anyone else, can be criticized on the current annual measure. India can point to its far lower per capita number and ask why it should be lectured by nations that industrialized a century earlier.
Not one of the four posts above mentions China. Not one mentions India. Two of the world’s three largest emitters vanish from the story entirely, because naming them would mean admitting the confession was never really about carbon math. The moment you leave the slogan and enter the actual accounting, “we did this” stops being a sentence anyone can finish honestly.
Here is the climate story you almost never hear: the earth did not get kinder. Human beings got better at surviving it. Per capita deaths from natural disasters have fallen more than 90 percent since the 1920s and 30s, not because droughts and floods stopped happening, but because we got better at building, warning, evacuating and rebuilding. You would never know it from the confession booth, because competence does not generate the same emotional charge as guilt.
Guilt without evidence still produces belief, and belief produces behavior. This is where the theology stops being a meaningless online performance and starts costing something real.
A 2024 Pew survey found that among U.S. adults under 50 who are unlikely to have children, 26 percent cite environmental concerns, including climate change, as a major reason, compared with just 6 percent of adults 50 and older. Morning Consult’s 2020 survey found eleven percent called it a major reason and another fifteen percent a minor one.
Those numbers look modest until you narrow the lens to the generation actually raised on this messaging: a 2021 study surveying ten thousand people ages sixteen to twenty five across ten countries found roughly four in ten hesitant to have children specifically because of climate change, and a 2025 survey of American Gen Z found a similar share.
Perhaps those at Human Rights Watch or in Parliament or in Congress do not intentionally attempt to talk a generation out of having children. But that is the practical result of teaching young people, year after year, disaster after disaster, that the world is ending and that they are the ones who ended it. Teaching a generation to see bringing a child into the world as a moral failure is not activism. It is a slow, voluntary demographic suicide, and it means that the climate cult is a suicidal one at a civilizational level.
A glacier fell down in a country most of these mourners could not find on a map. Villages that had nothing to do with any of this are burying their dead this week. They need water, medicine, shelter and honest reporting about what actually happened on their mountain, so they can prepare for the next one. Turning their deaths into a Western morality play does none of those things. It takes their tragedy and makes it about us, one more time, because that is the only story the confession booth knows how to tell.
Perhaps the main problem is not really the climate change “debate” but the reflexive habit (for domestic political purposes) of representing malevolence as benevolence. A different aspect of official deceit with its roots in the logic of warfare.
