Gulf truck operators such as Hawkins Transport (above) are the only lifeline for food deliveries and cattle transport while bad roads take a terrible toll on trucks. NHVR has grounded truck fleets in Normanton and Cloncurry over mechanical issues threatening many jobs and disrupting the food supply chain

August 31, 2026: In a scathing rebuke to transport regulators who are risking remote food supplies by banning trucks on outback roads so rough that they are unworthy of bitumen vehicle roadworthy standards, Kennedy MP Bob Katter has requested the Prime Minister intervene to ensure a sustainable solution to the bureaucratic crisis that threatens to deprive North Queensland’s most remote and First Australian communities of perishable foods, fuel and other essentials such as mail deliveries and disaster coordination, to shifting livestock over thousands of kilometres.

Cattle properties have lost their only transport for cattle to markets in the south, disrupting the supply chain and threatening many regional jobs.

The corporate National Heavy Vehicle Regulator has been terrorising major transport companies located in the Far North, grounding their trucks over minor mechanical issues which operators say are always fixed during regular maintenance schedules.

Truck operators have to contend with unimaginably poor road surfaces during the wet and dry seasons which take a terrible toll on vehicles, but say safety is never compromised.

Cairns News has made several inquiries with the NHVR to ascertain what industry qualifications their compliance officers have to enable them to ground one vehicle or entire truck fleets.

NHVR will not respond. A number of truck operators have claimed NHVR compliance officers, generally, have no industry qualifications such as mechanical, diesel fitting, tyre industry knowledge or actual truck driving experience in remote regions.

“I believe most compliance officers don’t even hold a heavy vehicle endorsement on their drivers licence,” one of the industry’s senior fleet operators remarked.

Since making urgent representations to the Minister for Indigenous Australians last week, in tandem with Traeger MP Robbie Katter’s meetings with the Queensland Government, to implore State and Federal transport regulators to lift their trucking ban on the only willing-and-able operator, Mr Katter has cautiously welcomed:

  • an overnight reversal by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator to lift a prohibition order ahead of a court challenge, and instead work more constructively with Hawkins Transport to get the fleet of 70 back up and running across the remote region and 75 staff back to work, despite requiring a 1000km round-trip for the nearest vehicle inspections at Mount Isa; and

  • the Federal Minister’s use of extraordinary powers on behalf of First Australians to ensure an interim emergency transport substitute for the sole service provider out of Normanton – 2000km from Brisbane – supplying the Gulf of Carpentaria and Cape York Peninsula remote Community Enterprise Queensland stores at Doomadgee, Pormpuraaw, Kowanyama and Wujal Wujal since 2012, along with other remote communities and cattle stations including Burketown, Georgetown, Croydon, Karumba, Gregory, Mount Surprise, Canobie, Lorraine, Floraville, Neumayer Valley, Wollogarang, West Moreland, Calvert Hills, Redbank, Hells Gate, Escott, Delta Downs, Mutton Hole, Inverleigh and more.

Mr Katter warned alternative freight operators were “few and far between” as much of the unsealed road network resembled “dusty goat tracks that get cut off every wet season by untrammelled floodwaters over notoriously neglected infrastructure” – and every day of bureaucratic stonewalling escalated region-wide anxiety about the viability of the recognised local business of nearly 30 years.

“Whilst we have been desperately trying to keep 75 staff and heavy vehicles on the roads, it’s not easy to get workers in far-away places like Normanton, where they’ve been doing a wonderful job.

“But to not give them natural justice in due process? These people in city towers whose shoe leather has never set foot off the pavement, who have zero grounding in the reality of life beyond the bitumen, nor do they seem to understand the rule of law. But they will when national attention is turned on their critical incompetence in depriving the people of these little towns of their food supply.

“And I do not exaggerate the situation. Myself and the Member for Traeger have been on the phone all day without a decision and, quite frankly, the people we dealt with couldn’t care less. That’s the attitude that’s resulted in the rapidly decreasing life expectancy of our First Australians.

“But I can assure all Ministers responsible that whilst neither the Prime Minister nor Premier will say anything, no PM or Premier likes a Minister who brings opprobrium on their government or party.

“These First Australian communities must have a reliable way of accessing both perishable and non-perishable produce since successive governments have taken away their rights to operate market gardens and go fishing.

“And no fair minded-person – even if there is a bit of racism in there – would stand by and allow a situation where you have all these tiny towns’ food supply to be cut off.

“But I’ve got news for them: if you are the Minister – whether it’s for Transport or First Australians – then you are responsible.”

12 thought on “NHVR grounds remote truck fleets, risking food supplies and regional jobs”
  1. It would be nice if the river crossings were wider and the guide posts more of and higher .

  2. Road train semis, 30 – 50 metres long on suburban and dirt roads, no wonder the roads are crumbling under the weight at speed. Greed screwing labour, they’re all in it in backroom deals. A win win for bloodsuckers getting 1 driver what 3 used to do. Think of the stress these drivers face everyday getting food on the shelves.

  3. Message to Hawkins transport, sent a minute ago:
Hello Hawkins I am writing to tell you that I have been on to Bob Katter’s office about the NHVR putting your trucks off the road.
What you need to know about the NHVR is that they are a company, and not a government department, and are operating under an Australian Business Number, which means that they are a commercial operation, just like yours, and hold full commercial liability for all harm, loss and injury they cause.
Furthermore, the NHVR must have indemnity insurance in place else they cannot legally trade.
That means that your company can make claims for compensation against NHVR, which they will have to pay.
This video of mine tells you how to make a claim without using lawyers, as it is a standard commercial process:

You can see what I have written on the Cairns News article about your problems. I comment as obvious_bob:
    https://cairnsnews.org/2026/09/01/nhvr-grounds-remote-truck-fleets-risking-food-supplies-and-regional-jobs/
All power to you, folks, you’re looking after a lot of people, and I hope you can continue to do so.

  4. Just to let you all know that I have phoned Bob Katter’s office and filled them in about the fact that the NHVR is a PTY LTD company and that that trucking company should be making claims against the NHVR for all its losses, telling Bob’s staffer that the NHVR cannot legally trade unless they have indemnity insurance in place.
I am about to contact Hawkins Transport to make them aware of the facts of the matter regarding the NHVR.
Let’s see how it pans out?

  5. Sorry Bibi, but you must be unaware, as those native people are, that we all have unalienable rights, one of them being the essential right to grow food.
I am also surprised that the Katters, knowing the the Heavy Vehicles crowd are, like every other allegedly “government” department, are incorporated, the NHVR being listed on the ASIC corporate registry as a “private company”:
    https://abr.business.gov.au/AbnHistory/View?id=23688060013
    Notice the Pty Ltd, Bibi?
This means that the NHVR have no lawful authority, and are subject to full commercial liability for all harm they perpetrate.
If I know this, why then do the Katters NOT know this, and act accordingly?
Bob and his sin have resources I could only dream of, yet I can bust this one and they can’t? Really.
Searching the corporate registry-ABN Lookup-for any government department anywhere, will reveal the same: they are all for profit businesses holding that full commercial liability.
Here’s how you can make a claim, the video being my work,-and note that the lass said she had a big win against “the government” using the info in my video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KP7wWobRjA
And here is the Cairns News story about my win over my local council:
    https://cairnsnews.org/2024/01/09/council-watch-groups-bleat-about-unaccountability-but-reject-liability-solution/
I doubt that anyone in this country has ever done anything like that before, Bibi.
Perhaps someone can get on to the Katters and tell them to lift their game? I certainly will.

  6. Take a look at the lower deck on the lead trailer behind the yellow & white striped prime mover so I can tell you of a roadtrain in central Australia in the 80s that stirred up so much bulldust on a gazetted highway that the cattle on the bottom deck all died of suffocation .
Bush trucks should be exempted from NHVR raids because their operators do spend the time making their trucks roadworthy because if the wheels are not turning they aren’t making any money and being unroadworthy puts the drivers life at risk

  7. To The Rt Hon Joe Bogan. You Nailed It On The Head with all you wrote.

Rural Australians Totally Despise the Aus CorpGovt. We are fed up with the State of Our National Roads albeit the Regional Shire Council Road Networks.

Strange how a Shire general manager who is on a salary of $250 plus per year can select a Lexus vehicle for work and his own usage that costs ratepayers Huge Dollars, but he chooses not to ensure that the Shire Roads are fit and safe for the regional ratepayers and general public.

These Parasites Need to Be Ousted ASAP.

  8. I phoned Katter’s office just after 5pm so had to leave a message, the gist of it being this:
    As an incorporated trading entity:
    https://abr.business.gov.au/ABN/View?abn=48557596718
NHVR must accept full commercial liability for all harm, loss and injury perpetrated, which is considerable in this case-and the Katters should know that, as they have been “in the game” for a long time, especially Bob.
To ground a massive fleet like that that services such a huge area must also come under the Unconscionable Conduct laws, for the simple reason that the company in question makes sure their trucks are in A1 condition in their regular servicing procedures.
The NHVR have weaponised their procedures in an attempt to fully knacker a viable company and its services.
Maybe the Blackfellas up their need to put a spear or two through the thighs of the offending NHVR officers? That would be a helluva lot more effective than pointing the bone at them, wouldn’t it.

  9. I was ignorant of the fact that government has taken away the rights if First Nations people to operate market gardens & go fishing… why.? “Why” seems to be the operative word for most if not all conundrums & convoluted decisions made by people in powerful places, in suits sitting in their ivory towers… under the watch of one known as ‘Elbowgreasy’.

  10. Dim-witted, insignificant bureaucrats, throwing their weight around in order to feel important and justify their jobs … with no understanding or interest in the difficulties faced by remote truck fleets.

  11. Crooked central governments would welcome a disaster, they would blame “ClimateChange” and send in the minister with a hard-hat to rescue everyone with funding approved by the UN. The central governments have been creating fiascos since they finished selling everything off, that’s about K.Rudd era. They will try to get some windmills in there however they can. The kickbacks must be magnificent. They know all they have to do is keep lying and they get paid, nothing bad happens, look at DicktatorDan who broke Melbourne and Victoria with his stoopid CoV-ID and attached programs such as removing gas stoves. If you add up all the misery he caused, his life would not be worth 1% of it yet he is still free and no doubt his bank balance is increasing. ClimateChange™ dogma is central to CarbonCredits™ fake currency which is being pushed from Swissyland.
Follow the money, all roads lead to the BIS, MIC and BigGov ministers bank accounts. The disadvantaged in FNQ are going to be ClimateChange™ victims and if they want to get paid, going transgender is their best bet.

  12. It seems those in high places are more interested in “Welcome to Country” ceremonies than be concerned about food, medicines and other necessary supplies to First Australians and all Australians living in remote communities and towns.
