The Laura Rodeo takes place this weekend June 27-28 which will see spectacular bull and bronc riding from some of the state's best performing riders

Laura Rodeo, Campdraft and Races are on the calendar every year in June and it is where several thousand spectators will flock to from Cairns and across the north.

The grounds and racetrack with Laura River frontage are just north of the tiny township of Laura along the bitumen 240 klms north of Mareeba.

The large grounds have hundreds of camp sites and all amenities are available.

Laura Races in brilliant far north Queensland weather is a great day out for the family and if you fancy a wager, there are bookies there to take your dough

Thursday 25th: Gates open at noon. The action kicks off in the arena with the Campdraft, followed by a family night and live bands in the evening.

Friday: Features all-day horse sports, campdrafting preliminaries, a licensed bar, and evening bands.

Saturday: The main thoroughbred race day. Highlights include the Calcutta at 10:00 AM, Fashion on the Field, horse racing, and evening live music.

Sunday: The official Rodeo day, featuring Open Bull Rides, Saddle Bronc, and Barrel Racing.

Regional events have been struggling due to the excessive cost of everything. The high cost of fuel and food has put a dent in rodeo activities across the state so let’s support them as much as possible.

If it were not for all the free labour from volunteers none of these fantastic shows would be held. The locals who help at every event are often overlooked but they should know they are greatly appreciated.

  1. All I can remember of Laura was just north of the town the road became extremely corrugated , there was one road grader working from there to Weipa

  2. Some of the articles these days have the feeling of just being advertising…rather than news.

I wonder if the editor will admonish me for this post? I don’t care.
