WHY, we ask, did long-time South Australian activist Mark Aldridge, form his own political party called United Voices Australia when he’s pursuing exactly the same issues as One Nation?
And why did the former senator Bob Day form a party called the Australian Family Party when Lyle Shelton is standing candidates under the Family First banner? It’s crazy, self-defeating and probably comes down to plain old ego-centric politics based on petty differences.
Shelton’s Family First, which aims to capture the national conservative evangelical Christian vote, will fracture One Nation’s national vote to a small degree, but Day’s fracturing of that same evangelical vote in South Australia is straight out stupidity.
Aldridge, meanwhile, brags that United Voice organised some of the largest rallies against mass migration in South Australia. “Now we see the highest levels in history,” he says on a social media post.
“Labor called us racists, yet I went against the grain and invited minorities to attend. No other parties joined us sadly, but we the people were united.”
Surely Aldridge knows that One Nation is campaigning on that very issue and has recently passed the Liberals in national polls and in South Australia? The recent Newspoll, for what its worth, shows SA Labor at 44%, One Nation 24%, Liberals 14%, Greens 12% and Others 6%.
Aldridge should also know that if One Nation can translate those figures into seats and the Liberals, Nationals and a few others hold on to seats, Labor and their suave, slick Premier Peter Malinauskas could face a hung parliament. Oh the pain and dread that would cause in Labor quarters across the country.
We fear that Aldridges’ United Voice Australia party is simply going to confuse and fracture the vote that would otherwise go to One Nation, which has been rated with a very good chance of winning seats off the Liberals, especially in regional areas.
Aldridge is well known in Adelaide due to his involvement in previous political campaigns and Farm Direct Markets and is contesting the Legislative Council (Upper House) along with a gaggle of other parties and various independents.
And then there’s Sarah Game, the former One Nation member in the Upper House, who resigned from the party and has gone “independent”, doing a preference swap with the left-leaning Stephen Pallaras Real Change SA.
The parties contesting the SA Upper House are: Stephen Pallaras Real Change SA, Sarah Game Fair Go for Australian, Australian Family Party, Family First, SA Best, Jing Lee Better Community, Legalise Cannabis Party, the Animal Justice Party, the Nationals, the Greens, the Liberals, Labor, One Nation, Independent O group, Independent P group and Independent Darren Phillips.
Good luck voters in working out who you’re going to cast your vote with in the South Australian Legislative Council. Joe Blow who knows nothing about politics and is voting because he has to will probably go for the “easy pick” group votes, and the Labor backroom boys will know how to exploit that to their maximum advantage – as they do in Victoria’s Upper House.
Legislative Council elections are decided by proportional representation. In that house, 11 of the 22 sitting members are up for election. To be elected, a candidate must receive a certain proportion of votes, known as a quota.
If a candidate gets a quota or more, they will be elected. If they do not meet this quota on first preference votes alone, they may get a quota from preferential votes distributed from the candidates with fewer first preference votes who are eliminated. This process continues until all vacant positions are filled.
Out of the 67 elected MPs in both houses of parliament, only 10 are independent or minor party – mostly in the Legislative Council.
The high profile Aldridge and even Bob Day would have made good candidates for One Nation, but instead chose to run with their own little political fiefdoms. It’s a pathetic state of affairs and has plagued the non-mainstream side of politics for decades.

Government-Run Euthanasia Surges in Western Australia

An alarming new report has exposed an unprecedented surge in the number of citizens being euthanized by their government in Western Australia, a spike so steep that critics warn the state is sliding toward a culture where suicide deaths are normalized, encouraged, and dressed up as “compassion.”
The shocking rise in medically assisted deaths was revealed in a new government report. The WA government’s latest assisted-suicide data reveals a 63% jump in just one year for deaths executed under the government’s voluntary assisted dying (VAD) program. The number of state-sanctioned deaths rose from 293 in 2023–24 to 480 in 2024–25. VAD now accounts for 2.6% of all deaths in Western Australia, and the youngest victim was just 23 years old.
This is only the fourth annual report since the 2019 Voluntary Assisted Dying Act took effect. However, the trend is unmistakable as assisted death is rapidly becoming a routine “solution” rather than a last resort.

At this point people should know that politics, particularly in Australia, is a JOKE. There is no “democracy”, there is barely even the pretense and illusion of it anymore.
Oh and to the suggestion of “crazy, self-defeating and probably comes down to plain old ego-centric politics”, I would remind people, and CN who deleted my last comment about this, that we have PAULINE HANSON One Nation, JACQUI LAMBIE Network, KATTER’S Australian Party, we have had PALMER United Party and doubtless countless others. Nothing reeks more of “ego-centric politics” than actually having the neck to name a political party after yourself.
If you’d gone to the effort of writing some tome of a political manifesto, clearly defining why your economics and political policies are different and better than everyone else, then maybe fair enough. But if you didn’t then you’re nothing but an ego-centric grifter, just like all the others.
Politics is about ego and lust for power. It is never about service. When it comes to elections, expect dirty tricks. Who knows if the ‘splinter’ groups are not promoted by the uniparty for the express purpose of maintaining control of the gravy train? There are even questions about One Nation’s allegiance, which may be answered when preferences are nominated. Then we will know just how independent the independents are. And, if all else fails, we still have the AEC to make sure that government does not fall into the wrong hands.

At least the Australian Federal Parliament and all the state parliaments apart from Queensland have bicameral legislatures. The demands of universal suffrage can therefore be met if only one of the two parliamentary chambers is based on universal suffrage. There are many disadvantages to universal suffrage and historically it has not applied everywhere in the parliamentary system. Experience during the COVID “pandemic” suggests that most people want to follow the dictates of what they perceive as authority and in many cases also to target their fellow citizens who are perceived (by “authority”) to be defying authority. It should not be unacceptable to accept this as a fact of life and try to find ways to minimize its negative consequences. Would providing an alternative to voting based on universal suffrage help towards achieving such an objective? Sortition (choosing politicians by means of a lottery) had a part to play in the ancient Athenian democracy and should be included among techniques to be given rational consideration. The most obvious relevant problem would be that it could result in the elevation of inappropriate people. This could be countered by having a court whose task is to identify not who would be appropriate to play a part in public life but who would NOT be appropriate. Citizens who feel they are called upon to be public figures (or propose somebody else for such a role) should be encouraged to state this publicly and then the court (with assistance from input from the general public) should decide who is to be excluded. Experience suggests that the population in any case is much better at saying what they don’t want than at saying what would be a good idea for implementation. The selection of the parliamentarians would then be made by sortition from among the eligible candidates. These candidates would comprise a second parliamentary chamber. The parliamentarians in this second chamber would speak as individuals, would be off limits to journalists and other would-be intermediaries and would communicate directly with the public and with their colleagues. There would continue to be the kind of politics and politicians with which we are now familiar but they would be competing for a mandate with the second chamber. Which chamber would make decisions and which would be advisory would be determined by the outcome of a referendum to be held every five years or other agreed period and there would be no other referenda. The political base of the second chamber would be comprised of people who have indicated that they do not wish to vote for the politicians and candidates in the first chamber and they would not be allowed to do so unless they made a decision to join or rejoin the electorate for the first chamber.
