HAVE Donald Trump, his Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli-US intelligence community seriously underestimated the capability of Iranian missiles and drones.
While Trump has been demanding the surrender of Iran, a United Nations-accredited journalist Richard Medhurst says Iranian precision drone and missile strikes have successfully knocked out the very expensive US THAAD radar systems in the Gulf States, in particular the AN/TPY-2 (Qatar, Saudi Arabia) and AN/FPS-132 (UAE) facilities.
Medhurst says these radar systems are also part of Israel’s Iron Dome missile defence system, which might explain the large number of hits on Tel Aviv where at least 23 sites were hit last Sunday.
But the most damage was done in Qatar where a billion-dollar radar facility north of the US airbase, only one of six in the world, was hit by Shahed 126 drones. Medhurst said it will take another eight years to rebuild, based on the eight years it took to build. The 40-foot tall structure was the only one of its type in the Middle East.
While the US-Israeli operation to target and destroy Iran’s ballistic missile production facilities and launchers has reportedly been highly successful, the Shahed long-range attack drones are another matter.
Medhurst says there is only one US-Israel radar facility left, in the Negev Desert, but Israel no longer has an early warning system. Luckily for them, Iran’s volume of missile and drone attacks has dropped off dramatically.
Ballistic missiles require major infrastructure to assemble and deploy, but these drones can be assembled in a garage and launched from the back of a pickup truck.
Forbes magazine reports that Iran may be able to continue producing and launching new Shaheds almost indefinitely and while efforts to stop them must continue, American forces may face Shahed attacks for the foreseeable future.
The Shaheds, which cost between US$20k and $50k have a range of 4000km and are described as the poor man’s cruise missile.
“I can’t underestimate how screwed up this is for the Americans. If I were them I would genuinely be crying,” says Medhurst.
He says the remaining US radars in Jordan, UAE and Saudi Arabia are priced at about $US300-500 million each. “Those are the main THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Aerial Defense) radars and they are all destroyed now.”
According to CNN, multiple sources familiar with the matter say the Pentagon and National Security Council significantly underestimated Iran’s willingness to close the Strait of Hormuz in response to US military strikes while planning the ongoing operation.
“President Donald Trump’s national security team failed to fully account for the potential consequences of what some officials have described as a worst-case scenario now facing the administration, the sources said,” CNN reported.
Six days ago the New York Times reported: “Inside the administration, some officials are growing pessimistic about the lack of a clear strategy to finish the war. But they have been careful not to express that directly to the president, who has repeatedly declared that the military operation is a complete success.”

It was this coup which then removed Iran from the path of democracy.
