PM Albanese is tipped to finally face President Trump armed with his inherent disdain of the Australian Labor Party and its leader on June 15 at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, near Calgary.
For some time Trump has been critical of Albanese and his Marxist cohorts making no secret of his dislike for “lefty globalists”, when referring to Albanese.
While Trump has succeeded in getting other countries to increase defence spending, Albanese says he will not bow to US pressure to raise Australia’s defence spending to three per cent of GDP.
Trump’s tariffs speak loudly as evidenced when the world lined up to do deals with the US after Trump imposed vicious trade embargoes on all of the US trading partners.
Australia has not been excluded from a doubling of the original tariff for steel and aluminium entering the US which Trump just increased to 50 per cent.
Cairns News believes this crippling new rate will be the bargaining chip Trump will deal Albanese to increase the defence budget.
He has telegraphed many times to nations included in defence pacts that America will only provide military assistance for those countries that try to help themselves.
Instead, sources have said that Mr Albanese will stick with Labor’s existing policy of increasing defence funding to 2.33 per cent of GDP by 2033.
The government has left open the possibility of spending more than that, but maintains that additional funding will be based on strategic necessity, not pressure from the US.
Meanwhile, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth met with Defence Minister Richard Marles at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore last week to discuss defence spending.
“Ultimately a strong, resolute and capable network of allies and partners is our key strategic advantage,” Mr Hegseth said in his keynote speech.
“China envies what we have together … but it’s up to all of us to ensure that we live up to that potential by investing.”
In response, Mr Marles appeared open to increasing defence spending, ahead of Mr Albanese and President Trump’s first meeting.
“Clearly we have increased defence spending significantly, and that is acknowledged,” Mr Marles said in his own address.
“But we want to be making sure we are calibrating our defence spending to the strategic moment that we need to meet, so we are up for the conversation.
“The American position has been clear and its understandable, and that’s a conversation that we will continue to have with the US.”
However, Sky News Sunday Agenda understands Mr Albanese has no intention of shifting Labor’s position on defence spending.
Under the government’s projections, defence spending is forecast to reach 2.33 per cent of GDP by 2033–34, up from about 2.05 per cent in 2025-26.
Mr Albanese lashed out on Thursday at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) after it published a report criticising the government’s funding trajectory.
“Seriously, they need to, I think, have a look at themselves as well and the way that they conduct themselves in debates,” Mr Albanese told ABC Radio.
“We’ve had a Defence Strategic Review. We’ve got considerable additional investment going into defence – $10 billion.”
ASPI Executive Director Justin Bassi defended the report, saying the government was failing to meet the urgency of the global threat landscape.
“ASPI was set up to deliver the hard truths to the government of the day,” Mr Bassi told Sky News.
“Unfortunately the world has these threats that do impact Australia and to counter these threats we need to, unfortunately, spend more money in the area.”
Mr Albanese’s highly-anticipated meeting with US President Donald Trump appears likely to occur at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis from June 15 to 17, 2025.

Elbow can easily raise defence spending fron 2% to 3% of GDP by lowering GDP by 33%, something the ALP has been working on for decades. Another quick way would be to declare WA a separate economic zone and not included in Australian GDP which would then fall by probably 50%. There are a lot of foreign companies, many not paying royalties, with profits going to Europe and elsewhere.
Meanwhile the planned war, which is not allowed to interfere with Trump’s 250th anniversary of the 1776 so-called independence, could result in a total wipeout of Taiwanese people, just like Gaza and Ukraina at present are mass clear-outs for real estate purposes. Surely Taiwan is capable of sinking the entire Chinese fleet by itself, maybe they should just do it. Their top company Taiwan Semiconductor is already moving to the USA. About the only intelligent decision that worthless scoundrel of a fake, unelected PM has ever made. If nothing else, he at least has the courage to tell the truth about Mr Operation Warp Speed and stand up to him; unlike the rest of them. Australia could improve its defence by improving our relationships with our neighbours and important trading partners by not taking part in US decreed sabre rattling exercises like sending our navy into Chinese military exclusion zones.
We should abide with international Law of the Sea rather than someone’s “rules based order.”
If we are to spend on more military hardware, don’t buy any NATO or US junk. The conflict in eastern Europe, Israel’s thwarted attempt to bomb Iran, and the recent India versus Pakistan conflict has shown that US and European military hardware is totally inadequate. We should look at buying Russian air defence systems, missiles and drones, and those new Chinese fighter jets are very formidable.
