Regional Queensland to provide safe haven for eligible refugees

Eligible refugees will soon be making their way to regional Queensland.

It’s part of the Federal Government’s Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV) scheme, agreed to by the Queensland Government late in March.

SHEV is open to those who have arrived in Australia “illegally” but who qualify for protection and “have demonstrated an intention to work and or study in Australia”.

It is a path to permanent residency, and many see it as a win-win for regional communities who are desperate for workers.

But the Federation of Diverse Cultural Communities in Queensland (FDCCQ) says more can still be done to help get the SHEV scheme off the ground.

President of FDCCQ, Agnes Whiten says without the financial support base, it will all be for nothing.

“FDCCQ is willing and able to support this initiative and do much more, but we need funding to do so,” Ms Whiten explains.

“Our aim is to encourage migrants and refugees to settle in the regions where their skills can be utilised.”

Currently there are settlement services for migrants and refugees in Queensland, but they are concentrated mainly in the South East corner of the state and these organisations need support in enhancing what they offer.

They say there’s a need to connect migrants with each other and the communities that they live in.

“The scheme and it’s success is vital to Queensland’s future but employment opportunities and local support will be crucial,” continues Ms Whiten.

“Relocating these people with the help of new technology will ensure a smooth transition both culturally and economically.”

A SHEV holder can also apply for a prescribed permanent or temporary onshore substantive visa (except a permanent Protection visa) if, for at least 42 months of the 5 years of the SHEV, they:

• were employed in regional Australia and did not receive any social security benefits;

• were enrolled in full time study in regional Australia;

• a combination of the above

The FDCCQ say the new scheme is a step in the right direction to facilitate greater community engagement, regional business engagement and business to business opportunities.

It’s a start to help unite culturally and linguistically diverse communities as never before.

“Our organisation was started because we are passionate about helping migrants to settle and to feel they belong in regional Queensland,” Ms Whiten says.

“We are now a culturally diverse society; we have embraced multiculturalism so we can’t send 25% of Australians who come from a different background back home.”

  1. Hafta pay that one Ken..

  2. And when these so called refugees fail to comply with our law and return to their natural violent ways we will launch a class action against the Government and the individual politicians who got their warm fuzzy feeling from this course of action

  3. Learn about islam.
    It has nothing to do with race, it’s an ideogical invasion from a political ideology using religion as its Trojan horse.
    Islam uses lying techniques to fool you – taqiyya, muruna, tawriya, kitman. It also uses “sympathy” techniques to make them appear like victims – Tamaskan tatamakan = “Show a victim’s face, and you will take over”.
    When you consider these techniques & add a deep understanding of their ideology – a picture starts to build. Add to it – in the news of only the last 5 years – terrorism, child brides, fgm, crime, “refugees”, supporting ISIS, funding ISIS, corrupt islamic schools, rampant mosque building, the government telling non-muslims to be tolerant of muslims, muslims in jails increasing & needing to be separated from other groups (e4e anyone?) drive by shootings (daily in Sydney), rape gangs, threats to behead critics, imams blaming everyone else, riots in our streets…

    Getting the picture? Join the dots, it’s really not that hard. Then you have Lefties blindly supporting them but with no understanding of their ideology.

    If you want to learn to what islam is & what it means – read its critics as most are ex-muslims who have left it, or who were not but experienced it.

    Think about it. If you really wanted to learn about Scientology – who would you believe – Tom Cruise or Nicole Kidman.

    Here’s a great historical document on their prophet – quite enlightening.

    Let’s forget about all the homeless people in Australia and put a roof over the fukn rag heads instead fuck you Australian government you xxxx make me fukn sick to my stomach

    • When did one human being become more important than another? Oh yeah I forgot the treatment that was given to the aboriginal people when the first fleet arrived in Australia. Or the race related hate which has been in our not too distant past. Have a heart! This is a global problem and the homeless in Australia have so much help provided to them, were you aware of that? If you are worried about the homeless people then have you ever offered your home to one of them or protested if you don’t think the government does enough? If you see a homeless person begging for money do you give it to them or just turn your head and look the other way? I’ll tell you now that I know you wouldn’t, because you are xenophobic. It never concerned you before reading this story i’d be sure of that. The refugee crisis is not just happening in Australia, have a look what is going on in the world. We have to do our part to help! Don’t be naive and narrow minded.

  5. What is Ms Whiten thinking the goverment is getting worse for letting this going ahead we have that many people in Australia out of work so we have more than enough skilled people without these people taking our jobs put them back on a plane and send them home
