A new live export market in southern Australia has emerged with the shipment of 32,000 Angus feeder steers to Russia. It’s the largest live export contract for southern Australia cattle and the first European shipment of cattle subject to strict new exporter supply chain rules, known as ESCAS. The new rules make the export company Livestock Shipment Services (LSS) responsible for animal welfare up to and including the point of slaughter. LSS which has been under scrutiny for animal welfare issues has been reluctant to talk to the media.
