The turmoil comes amid mounting political tensions, with Palestinian flags appearing at mass demonstrations and concerns growing over the influence of radical movements on the country’s streets.
Violence spread Saturday across Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux and other cities as police confronted demonstrators with tear gas and water cannons. According to the Associated Press, an estimated 550,000 to 800,000 people participated in approximately 110 demonstrations nationwide.
The Wall Street Journal reported that protesters vandalized government buildings and set fires as student demonstrations merged with broader protests over rising living costs, public spending cuts and dissatisfaction with President Emmanuel Macron’s government.
The unrest began in mid-September when students demanded additional teachers, improved school facilities and educational reforms. Within weeks, demonstrations spread to hundreds of schools and major urban centers.
By October 1, French authorities were describing the escalating disturbances as urban violence.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu condemned the violence, blaming radical far-left elements and criminal groups for exploiting the demonstrations.
The unrest has since drawn labor unions, university students, Yellow Vest activists and political organizations into a widening confrontation with the government.
Palestinian Flags Appear as Radical Political Movements Join Protests
The unrest has also taken on an international political dimension, with Palestinian flags appearing alongside communist banners and revolutionary slogans.
