The bird flu case was located in Western Australia’s Cape Le Grand beach on June 14, and confirmed on June 20.
WA’s Agriculture Minister Jackie Jarvis said the brown skua seabird died while in isolation.
The bird was a sub-Antarctic species.
Another bird, a southern petrel, was also being tested.
It died overnight on Friday and had returned a suspected positive result for the H5 influenza.
The Australian mainland had been the last continent free of this deadly strain of bird flu.
It was detected on the remote Australian territories of Heard Island and McDonald Islands in October last year.
Federal Agricultural Minister Julie Collins said it was expected the strain would eventually hit Australia.
“If it is confirmed to be the H5 bird flu this will be sobering but not unexpected, given the spread globally,” she said on Friday, before the positive result was confirmed on Saturday.
“I want to reassure the public that we’re well placed to respond to and to manage this situation.”
This includes $113 million towards preparedness measures, the minister said.
From here, state and territory leaders will meet to discuss the next steps, including increased surveillance.
Ms Collins said on Saturday there was no evidence of any mass mortalities in Australia, nor any evidence of infection in poultry.

There is no use in pointing the finger at the usual suspects behind this event.
Previously in the US chicken farmers realised that their chickens were sick due to poison in the feed and that was proven when they swapped to another trusted feed supplier.
The next step in this Bird Flu business will probably be that some big chicken/turkey/duck producing company will euthanize thousands of their flock. But that is either someone that has been tricked by poisoned feed, or is a mega poultry business that is in on the game.
The best thing we can do is to get the word out to the hundreds of poultry farmers about this poisoned feed problem possibly. About if their flocks start to get sick and what to do about it.
In the meantime the health officers will be the next problem. They maybe ordered to exterminate huge amount of poultry even if they are healthy.
And it’s possible that they will set up some Human bird flu deaths.
It will be interesting to see if people in general will go along with that game after the last time they rolled out the needles.
My gut tells me that they are not going to do that and this event is strictly for creating food shortages.

Place wheat, barley, spelt, millet, lentils, and beans under cool water. Soak them overnight in a large bowl, covered with plenty of water. According to the agreement, which was drawn up by the WEF and the United Nations (UN), food production is causing “global warming” and must be eliminated.
To “save the planet” from “climate change,” globalists insist, farms must be shut down across the world.
The WEF agreement sets targets for how much farmland each nation must eliminate in order to comply.
Under the guise of reducing “methane emissions,” thirteen nations have signed the pledge to engineer global famine by gutting agricultural production and shutting down farms.
