Federal parliamentarians in Australia received a 2.4% salary increase that took effect on July 1, 2025. This followed a 3.5% pay rise implemented on July 1, 2024, and a 4% increase in 2023.
The independent Remuneration Tribunal sets these annual adjustments, using factors like public sector wage trends and inflation.
Current Salary Breakdown (Effective July 2025)
Following the 2025 adjustment, key base salaries and allowances are approximately as follows:
- Prime Minister: Approximately \(\$622,050\) per annum
- Opposition Leader: Approximately \(\$442,640\) per annum
- Cabinet Ministers: Approximately \(\$412,735\) per annum
- Backbenchers: Approximately \(\$239,260\) per annum
Allowances
In addition to their base salary, parliamentarians receive work-related allowances to cover the costs of serving their constituents. For example, Senators receive a flat electorate allowance of roughly \(\$39,700\) per year, while Members of the House of Representatives receive between \(\$39,700\) and \(\$57,100\) per year depending on the geographic size of their electorate.
