Salvation Army reports 20 per cent of starving Aussies eating from bins, can't afford food or electricity

91% skipping meals, 60% eating expired food and 1 in 5 eating from bins

New Salvos Report exposes Cost-of-Living Emergency for Australia’s Poorest

The Salvation Army today issued an urgent warning that Australia’s cost-of-living crisis is spiralling into an emergency for the nation’s most marginalised people, with a new report revealing nearly one in five (19%) people surveyed saying they had eaten from bins and three in five (60%) saying they had eaten expired or spoiled food in the past 12 months.

The new report surveyed 4,400 Australians seeking emergency relief support from The Salvation Army and revealed widespread food insecurity and severe financial distress, with 91% saying they skipped meals in the past 12 months and almost one third (32%) saying this happened daily.

The report also found one third (35%) said they survived on only one meal a day and 67% said they watered down food or drinks to make them last longer.

One community member who received support from The Salvation Army said, “We starve, it’s that simple. We drink water because it fills us up. We walk a bit to take our minds off this horrible life we are in, and we beg whoever we can for help.”

Another community member simply said they “go without food, find thrown-out food, look in bins” in order to survive.

Children are increasingly bearing the brunt of the crisis, with 35% of parents saying their children had gone to school hungry and almost 6 in 10 (59%) households with school-aged children saying kids had missed school because families could not afford transport costs in the past 12 months.

“It is deeply confronting to see so many people across our community pushed to such desperate levels of hardship, where parents are skipping meals, children are going to school hungry and people are eating spoiled food or even eating from bins simply to survive,” says Major Bruce Harmer from The Salvation Army.

“No one in Australia should be forced to choose between heating their home, feeding their children or buying medication, yet this is the reality facing more and more people every single day.”

The report highlighted widespread “energy poverty”, with 84% of respondents going to bed early to keep warm, 63% living in darkness, relying on candles and torches, and almost half (49%) using public places such as shopping centres or public bathrooms to avoid using electricity at home.

Medical care is also increasingly out of reach, with over half (51%) unable to afford to see a doctor, dentist or optometrist, 46% unable to afford prescription medication and one quarter (25%) relying on hospital emergency departments instead of visiting a GP.

Another mum who received support from the Salvos said, “We never have enough food. We buy what is cheap and rely on help and food banks. I am very careful about our electricity use. My oldest son has been making do this year with only one school shirt. We put water in dish soap, shampoo, cleaning products, and other items to stretch them. We rarely buy milk, but when we do, we add water to make it last longer. We don’t spend money on clothing. We often fill prescriptions late or don’t take them daily to stretch them out further.”

Further findings from the report included:

  • 82% said they had gone an entire day without eating in the past year.
  • 87% said they avoided using heating or cooling over the past year due to cost pressures
  • 77% said they had been unable to properly heat or cool their home in the past year
  • 90% have experienced being unable to afford public transport or fuel for their car

The Salvation Army is calling on Australians to support its vital work, with demand for assistance continuing to rise across homelessness, emergency relief, financial hardship, family violence, youth services and community meals. The Salvos’ Red Shield Appeal is aiming to raise $41 million to support those doing it tough across the nation.

“Our report surveyed thousands of people who reached out to the Salvos for emergency relief support, with 90% saying they would not have managed financially without the help they received,” Major Harmer adds.

“But the need is growing rapidly and we cannot do this alone. Right now, your support can help provide food, financial assistance, safe shelter and hope to Australians doing it incredibly tough.”

Across Australia last year, through The Salvation Army’s network of over 400 centres and 2,000 services, the Salvos provided:*

  • Assistance to one person every 17 seconds
  • More than 1.74 million sessions of care to over 228,000 people in need
  • Over 1 million nights of safe accommodation
  • More than 1.4 million meals to those who accessed our homelessness services.

19 thought on “Salvos warn 20 per cent of Aussies eating from bins in Labor’s ‘new Australia’”
  1. It would be appreciated if Victorian-premier JACINTA ALLAN a denigration of a woman, donate some $1 million machete bins to a needy Salvation Army to accommodate the overflowing generosity of the People of Australia.

  2. Commenter from Vic
$4.3m in 2024, the funding all sorted to do the road up, $100 million from the federal government and
$30 million from the NSW state government, all done in parallel ( note we don’t know exactly when the purchase deal was done ). When he has to move out because of ClimateChange™ rising sea levels eroding his cliff-top block, he can do one of those begging ads on SBS-TV, dress his grandchildren in shabby clothes and put a few homeless on the lawn, so we can donate extra money to him. Nonetheless probably worth $6m by roadworks completion and no capital gains tax owing.

  3. karnala said – “… Those on a low-income need affordable housing…”
    .
Well you can hardly get more affordable than living in your car or under a bridge, so what’s not to like? And the views are to DIE for.
    .
Menwhile, a congenitally retarded speech-impaired walking talking Pig’s Arse aka AnAL has somehow managed to amass a MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR Property Portfolio complete with a FOUR MILLION DOLLAR ocean-front Holiday Home with a $100 Million Dollar multi-lane custom driveway right up to the front door funded entirely by the Australian taxpayer.
    .
Not too abstractly dissimilar to that world-renowned kiddy-fiddling PAEDOPHILE Snuff Scotty walking away from his MASS-MURDERING gig at the Lodge with his $52 MILLION Genocide Bonus stuffed down the front of his saucy red leather G-String while he shakes his booty alongside all his child-molesting bum-buddies down there in the local Hillsong Baby-Groping Club, with not a care in the world because he knows damn well that he’s UTTERLY UNTOUCHABLE.
    .
So why SHOULDN’T all those “low income” vagabonds be enjoying the benefits of dumpster diving to get their daily rations, God knows the REST of us are well accustomed to a constant diet of GENOCIDAL SHIT from our Treasonous craven low-life foreign-owned sold-out paid-off fake corporate Australia-hating “government” here in the Arsehole of the World aka Australia.

  4. Where do the 20% get off rifling through my dumpster and raiding my pantry just because the Lib-Labour Uniparty’s been squeezing the crap out of the middle and working class since Hawke and Keating started the collapse we had to have?
    .
If just 20% of Australians had resisted the Lib-Labour Uniparty BS and not cowed decades ago we wouldn’t be in the sht we’re in. But it’s still not to late to at least STOP THE ROT and stop eating the rubbish that’s being fed to more and more of us.
    .
Maybe it’s Time to get rid of those who manipulate and keep our treacherous Uniparty Pied Pipers in their pockets. Time to prevent us from owning nothing and being happy, right? (!)

  5. Re: “And half a billion dollars is given to a religious group that encompasses a very small, very wealthy part of the community eh??”
    .
    Which group? For what reason?

  6. LOL. And Aussies keep voting for the same Lab-Green-Teal bozos. Pauline is only getting the defunct Lib-Lab votes.
Sorry to be the broken record, but Australia is under judgement for casting Jesus Christ aside for the god of evolution and its subsequent philosophies. Every man does what is right in his own eyes – abortion, granny-bashing as in Pat’s list.

  7. The skips’ aka dumpsters’ food has more vitamins than a McDonalds McBurger dinner so an investment in a pair of bolt cutters is well advised. If you save $20 a day on food or $50 for a large family you might be able to afford your mortgage. Get a food van and start making your own McDonalds, McCurry or McKFC or juice bar and with no input costs you will soon be rolling in money.

  8. If we had a ‘Chief Carer’ for the people down under and I got the gig I’d take one of those 1/2 billion grifted Ozi dollar gift packs back and end homelessness. With that kind of money you get soup kitchens, open barrack type shelters with basic amenities and social workers for ever. With the other half billion I would order flat pack housing designed and built here and have it whatever was best in cost, construction time and living in. New suburbs and utilities easy if you can get any non-union/grifter construction workers. That kind of money translates as a solution to the chronic housing hole and to help public housing re-stock. Lib/labs sold a lot of it off in bulk a few decades back in their forward lack of thinking.
But alas, its all a fantasy as it would be on the Asian credit again which is maxed out for future generations to sort out.
A complete halt to immigration would do for now because we are full and most are just useless scabs. Ai will already replace many professionals here and the only IT 3rd work unskilled Indians do is scamming. Its obscene such money is gifted to those who could survive quite well without it and to soothe the justified paranoia of those 150k genocidivists among us. Must we remind Albo that it was foreigners who attacked our peace and safety along with other certain diversities we have to tolerate over and over week in week out without any relief or justice.
Eureka2.0? The Trappers are back and its just over what we said: Jack!

  9. I expect they would have got those figures from their own customers who live in Salvo hostels

  10. As it currently stands, every other day S&P 500 companies are automating 20% of their workforce. The economic consequence means the company captures economic rent; which refers to the profits generated from the increased production minus the wage expense. So, when every company of a sector automates 20% of its workforce, which takes no longer then a four month business quarter!, the economic rent gets passed directly to the consumers in the form of temporary price bubbles.
    .
Over the past year, without anyone even noticing, the economy has started its anticipated bifurcation into two different species.
    .
On the one side, you have the companies sitting on durable scarce assets that cannot be digitally replicated into infinity via AI.
    .
Then on the other side of the bifurcated equity markets, you have the companies whose entire value potential rests upon the renting of human cognition to customers. These are the rapidly expanding AI centric companies springing up like mushrooms.
    .
So, without people even realising what’s going on, what we now see happening is that human intelligence is starting to become the cheapest commodity on the planet.
    .
It is not just a person’s cognition which has been steadily harvested over the past fifteen years, but everything that human intelligence has created over the past 100,000 years or so. It can all be digitally replicated into infinity, digitally modified into new forms of intelligence, and its all done at no cost: – its free.
    .
Despite its infancy, the AI generated over-supply of human cognition has already started to saturate the demand. People now have infinite knowledge at their fingertips and human lives are too short to digest even a nano-fraction of this. As this process continues, which it will, the economic result will be the re-valuation of human cognitive value to zero: it is headed towards worthlessness. That is end result.
    .
As ‘cognitive scarcity’ is the precise commodity that AI was built to destroy, then the question arises, that of the two bifurcating equity species, – guess which one is actually going to compound?
    .
Whilst the less intelligent masses continue to consume and ‘place value’ on a human commodity that is now exponentially depreciating into utter worthlessness, if not already done so, those on the other side of the bifurcation trade are gravitating towards the opposite commodities of supreme scarcity.
    .
So, whether in eighteen months, or five years, – the re-pricing of the equity markets is coming. This will be like twenty years ago when Argentina repriced its currency, where If you had a million bucks in your bank account on Friday evening, when the banks re-opened again on Monday morning, you had a hundred thousand dollars. The forthcoming repricing will simultaneously devalue everything priced in the old financial era currency.
    .
As per normal, the stupid and indolent will complain, but they’ll have only themselves to blame. At least they’ll have an infinity of worthless knowledge to continue downloading onto their devices.
    .
    The re-pricing is coming.

  11. These figures show what an absolute disgrace this Federal Government has allowed to happen. We are supposed to be a first world country, but these statistics prove otherwise. Charity begins at home Albanese. Start managing our country properly.

  12. Well folks,
    .
No-one likes being the broken record in the room, pointing out the big fat festering pink Elephant in the room, but you HAVE been told…
    .
… NOTHING is going to change, except for the WORSE, until enough of the Useless Eaters have NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE, to motivate them to actually STAND UP and DO SOMETHING to CHANGE it FFS.
    .
Nepal is the lesson, folks, the instructable on how to take our country back from these Treasonous foreign-owned sold-out paid-off Australia-hating MONGREL ARSEHOLE BASTARDS who presume to rule over us, along with their shit-for-brains ARMIES of Granny-bashing child-molesting pig-raping mass-murdering hired mercenary thugs.
    .
God bless the Salvos, but they’re fighting a losing battle against the lanslide of CASUALTIES of the greedy baby-eating genocidal Globalist war AGAINST US.
    .
Mr. Rope & Mr. Lamp Post will set things right, first and foremost by REMINDING the sold-out foreign-owned POLITICAL establishment exactly who it is that they should be AFRAID of. That, and AMPUTATING them from out of our country and out of this world.

  13. And look at Aged Care stay at home packages.
Indigenous people can apply from age 50 and all other Australians must be 65 or over.
Many deserving of help are not granted approval and the ones who do get approval have to apparently wait for up to eighteen months or so for any funding to come through for any help.
People were scared before about aging but now it’s absolutely terrifying knowing that many Aged Australians desperately needing help and applied for Aged Care Stay at Home Package either have to wait so long for any funding to come through or their application for Stay at home package is denied. Tragic.

  14. We still have another 2 years of Labor until the next election, due in 2028. The pace of reform under this government is at turtle-pace. Those on a low-income need affordable housing.. the very people they were supposed to be helping!!!

  15. Yeah, the cult of small hat wearing genocide loving psychopaths will always have their plate served full, and still bitch about it.
I doubt that when Australians are eating grass, like the North Koreans from time to time, they’ll have the smarts to work out what the fuck is going on.
    Maybe they really are ovine.

  16. And half a billion dollars is given to a religious group that encompasses a very small, very wealthy part of the community eh??
