Police have shot dead fugitive gunman Dezi Freeman at a property in Victoria’s north-east, according to multiple media reports this morning.
Victoria Police said he was shot shortly after 8.30 this morning, the ABC reported.
A report in WA Today said Freeman was shot dead by members of the police Special Operations Group this morning (Monday) at 8.30am at a rural property at Walwa, after more than six months. on the run.
Walwa is on the Murray Valley Highway on the upper reaches of the Murray River near the Victoria-NSW border.
“Police were tipped off that he was believed to be hiding in a container on a property, according to unconfirmed reports,” WA Today reported.
Freeman has been wanted since August over the fatal shooting of two police officers at Porepunkah, near the township of Bright.
The 56-year-old Freeman fled into bushland at Mount Buffalo National Park after a shooting that apparently happened as police attempted to force entry to his caravan while executing a search warrant.
Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart were killed in the shooting.
What the media is not talking about is what Freeman told his friend Mike Holt, who spoke to him before the shooting last year.
Holt said he was told by Freeman that police were harassing him, had allegedly “stolen two of his cars, beaten him up and dragged him through the courts”.
Victoria Police told media that no officers were injured in the incident this morning. “The state coroner will attend the scene and Victoria Police’s Professional Standards Command will oversee the investigation into the shooting of Freeman,” the ABC reported.
Victorian government minister Sonya Kilkenny said it was a “developing situation”. “The main thing is that our thoughts, our concerns and our support are with the Porepunkah community and, of course, the families of the two police officers killed in that tragic incident almost six months ago,” she told media.
Victorian YouTuber Topher Field said his sources told him that Dezi was discovered and that he fired first at police, with police returning fire fatally soon afterwards.
“News flash: If you shoot at people they can legitimately shoot back. That’s true no matter who they are. If you become a lethal threat to them, they can use lethal force on you, end of story. Those who live by the sword, die by it.,” Field posted on X.

Fake news M$M is convinced being shot by police is the same as being convicted with a trial, which proves one thing anyway, that they are fake news. Only an uninterrupted timeline of video and voice of armed contractors interactions with Freeman before his Harry Houdini and his takedown, that’s if it was him, will give the thin blue line any credibility.
Well it doesn’t matter what people say from now on including the Victorian Police, but Dezi will forever be someone who was never charged with the crime of murder or manslaughter, never went to trial for it and was never convicted of it. Technically from a legal perspective, he will remain forever innocent according to the letter of the law. And Victorian Police will be forever known as the people who killed a person upon whom they were executing an arrest warrant, since they themselves have admitted it (whilst Dezi obviously never admitted to any crimes).
Police should have thought this through far better than they did. They have now – as a direct result of their actions – created a situation where there seem to be three “classes” of outside observer. At the one extreme we have people who will always be convinced that Dezi was 100% a victim of State and Police brutality and that his death was premeditated by the Police in order to silence him and avoid a “show trial”. Then you have people at the opposite extreme who celebrated the killing of a citizen who has not actually been convicted of any serious crime (I sure hope none of those people ever get selected for jury duty).
Then you have the cohort in the middle like me – people who wanted fair justice to be served and wanted him taken alive and in good health so that he could be afforded a fair trail attended by an unbiased jury of his peers and to receive high quality legal representation. At least then, were he found guilty and the jury were beyond reproach and appeals exhausted, the finding would have been fair, whatever it was.
But none of that will happen now. And as a result we will be stuck with these three cohorts – forever.
