DEZI Freeman revealed his extensive knowledge of the law in various encounters with police and magistrates going back to 2018 when he fought attempts by a family to block a public access road..
As can be seen in this video, Freeman was far from the lawless individual he has been portrayed in media reports, as he assures police they won’t be interfering with traffic on the nearby highway during a protest over Covid restrictions.
At one public protest in a park, Freeman and his High Court class action group were approached by police claiming to be enforcing the Victorian Health and Wellbeing Act in regard to mask wearing. However Freeman, quoting from the Act itself, maintained he had lawful excuse not to comply with mask wearing.
Contrary to the media narrative that Freeman is some sort of “sovereign citizen” who does not acknowledge the law, Freeman himself, during the discussion with the local cops stated: “We have a responsibility and duty to not only learn the law and abide by it but to uphold it, making sure that other people, especially those we employ, are obeying and upholding the law, because the law is here to protect us, no-one is above the law.”
When it came to standing up for the law, Freeman did not know how to back off. He took it as far as arresting rogue magistrates and police. That was probably his mistake, as it appears that police took it upon themselves to launch a long-running campaign of lawfare harassment against him.
Freeman said it began in the road blockage issue when the lawyer of the family obtained a restraining order against him. Freeman fought that in the local court, self-represented and had some success, with a magistrate declaring he had a valid complaint.
But other magistrates had different views and were not going to co-operate with Freeman regardless of how much law he cited.
And then came a speeding fine (about 11kmh over) and accompanying drug test, which Freeman refused, which attracted a two-year licence suspension and confiscation of firearms. He challenged it in the Supreme Court without success.
The big event was the filing of the misprision of treason charge against Premier Dan Andrews in 2021, when several hundred people gathered at the Myrtelford Magistrate’s Court to file the private prosecution brought by local chiropractor Jim Rech
What followed was a chaotic disruption of the court due to Covid rules, disruption of process and the magistrate dismissing it because the complainant failed to appear. That happened because a link to the court was somehow disrupted.
Freeman, who was going to appear with Rech, was nabbed by police outside the court and frog marched through the town to the local police station. It was becoming clear that Victoria Police and the courts were not going to play ball with these rebels and Dezi Freeman had become public enemy No. 1.
Fast forward to 2025 and some 15 court appearances, and the persecution continued. Police were now given a search warrant in regards to some alleged “historical sexual offences,” which close associates called fake.
But these allegations now meant Freeman faced the prospect of losing custody of his children.
When a squad of 10 police turned up at the bus Freeman was living in on the morning of August 26th, he allegedly opened fire with a home-made shotgun, killing two policemen and injuring a third. He then apparently fled into the bush adjoining the property.
Media then went into overdrive, falsely stating that Freeman was “a sovereign citizen”, who, according to the ABC, “is someone who holds extreme anti-government views and believe the law does not apply to them.” That provably was not Freeman.
Anthony Albanese immediately jumped on the bandwagon, appearing on the ABC with Comrade Sarah Ferguson that night and declaring that “sovereign citizen ideology” was “a very real threat”.
This all happened to coincide with the ABC 4Corners and ABC Investigations programs on so-called sovereign citizens groups across the nation. Was this the perfect storm for Victoria Police to make their big move on Freeman and was it the straw that broke the camel’s back?
Freeman probably had less than an hour to make his way through the relatively open bush behind his block before the police helicopter arrived on the scene. He had few places to go to – perhaps an abandoned mine shaft or two.
His way inland was blocked by the steep, vertical bluffs of Mt Buffalo, leaving only a relatively small bush area for him to somehow hide in.
His options were limited but police were somehow unable to get a sighting from the chopper or body-heat detecting drones. And where were the dogs? Media footage didn’t show cops searching the bush, just a heavily armed paramilitary force standing around on local roads, stopping traffic.
They carried out a raid of a home occupied by Freeman’s relatives where his wife and children were staying. The wife was arrested but later released. And then in another raid, a 61-year-old man had his firearms confiscated apparently because he was in possession of some marijuana.
And now, nine days after the alleged shooting, police are suggesting Freeman has been helped by local people.
Freeman: “Even you must obey the law.”

I believe Mr. Freeman has either passed away or vacated the area long ago. If he is still alive and he is captured alive (admittedly unlikely but possible), I think he will have a very good case regarding the inability to conduct a fair criminal trial given the highly inflammatory, one-sided sensationalist media reporting that has relentlessly disparaged his character, arguably misrepresented it and afforded zero opportunity for any other possible side of the story to be told. There is one news agency in particular that has been so relentless, should Mr. Freeman ever stand trial, I will informing his lawyers of that particular website and suggesting they look at all the relevant articles and considering applying to exclude any potential jurors who have ever accessed it. Infact that media organisation has been so relentless, it may never be possible to assemble a jury in this country at all if justice is to be observed – and by that I mean the right to a fair trial.
Modern Australia shamefully has an unenviably despicable track record when it comes to trial by media and the chances of picking an unbiased jury should his case ever see the inside of courtroom sit somewhere between Buckley’s and none. Worse still, in the event that he did actually commit the offences as alleged, he will have endless avenues of subsequent appeal because of the biased media and a fair conviction that sticks may be far harder if not practically impossible to obtain. Talk about shooting yourselves in both feet.
I myself would be unbiased jurer and I would be perfectly happy to convict him should the case reach the threshold of beyond reasonable doubt, however in recent history, only 60% of criminal cases that go to court result in a conviction and of those 60%, 40% of them are subsequently reversed upon appeal. It doesn’t take a mathematician to work out therefore that only 36% of criminal cases ultimately result in a conviction once all avenues of appeal are exhausted.
I was once a foreman on a jury 30 years ago where the accused faced four criminal charges. Don’t think for one moment our police prosecutors are the brilliant minds that pervade our TV and movie screens. In “my” case they were obviously far smarter than the average person and with reasonably agile minds but they were not remotely of the calibre of a KC in terms of their ability to think swiftly on their feet, anticipate all rabbit holes, their ability to prepare, their ability to foresee holes in their case and their ability to thoroughly prepare witnesses (to be fair, they are probably overqualified, overworked and underpaid which dulls the quality of output of even the best of us). But in “my” case, the prosecution could only convince us of beyond reasonable doubt in one of the four charges so even in my own experience, we at a mere 25% were sitting around or below that low bar of 36%.
