Mt Isa MP Robbie Katter; Minister Industry and Science Tim Ayers and Bob Katter MHR discuss the future of Mt Isa smelter and NW Queensland

Federal Member for Kennedy, Bob Katter, is hopeful that this week’s “innovation and technology” roundtable, will result in some real solutions to the current crisis in Mount Isa and broader issues with metal processing in Australia.

“(Assistant Minister for Industry and Science) Tim Ayres is talking the talk. We now need him to walk the walk,” said Mr Katter.

Ayres addressed the National Manufacturing Summit In July stating the obvious, that Australia’s productivity performance has weakened in parallel with the decline of our manufacturing sector in recent decades.

“That is why the Albanese Government is investing heavily in reindustrialising our economy and our capacity to make more things here, to grow and invest, as part of our Future Made in Australia plan.” he said.

“This Government positions manufacturing as a driving force behind Australia’s productivity growth. Indeed, we know the reversal of the productivity slowdown depends in part on a revived manufacturing sector.

“This Summit comes at a pivotal moment. The Government is clear-eyed about the risks and opportunities, and the scale of the challenge before all of us.”

Katter said Mount Isa, indeed, Australia’s economic future hangs in the balance imploring the Minister to act decisively about Mt Isa’s plight.

“Metal processing is the backbone of our economic prosperity, particularly if we are to become more than the world’s quarry,” he said.

“We must have a national plan for processing our minerals onshore.

“Government should immediately move legislation to provide for a thriving metal processing industry. “

“This should include ‘Use it or Lose it’ legislation to stop stock traders sitting on our mineral reserves and a ‘Reserve Resource Policy’ to retain our resources for our use at a cheap price.”

“Bailing out greedy multinationals should be off the table, but government must take some responsibility to allow companies to not only survive but thrive. “

“If we lose Mount Isa, we lose the backbone of North West Queensland. And make no mistake – talk won’t save it. Only action will,” said Mr Katter.

  1. You need an Australian Trump at the helm. But you don’t like that do ya?

    Make Australia Great Again.

People get the leaders they deserve.

  2. brianajnz, I think the resources belong to the State, which means they belong to the people, at least in theory. If true, the State does not have to buy their own resources back off themselves.
Glencorp can go elsewhere and find a silver deposit.
Tony is correct, Glencorp is doing its bit to shut down the economy. It or affiliate will circle back under another name another day.
This is the Grating Reset. Bait and switch.
MB, if banks issue loans for say mineral processing, instead of their main business of keeping the RE swap of existing homes Ponzi scheme alive, this would be a different country. But that’s not the plan, democide and dissolution of the sovereign nation is. MPs from Labor, most of the LNP, all Greens and all who work for MSM want it. Traitors.

  3. The only way to save Australia is to borrow more money, the deficit is already over $1 trillion but a trillion is not that much if houses are $1 million each, it ‘s a grid of 1000 x 1000 houses or roughly something like 20 km x 20 km of houses, but unfortunately we don’t have them to sell off either.
We have less and less to sell off and more and more debt piling up faster than ever since Hawke, Keating and Howard sold off all the assets. Our would think some intelligence would be an absolute imperative in this situation wouldn’t you. Instead we have Keating behind the curtain of a clown show.

  4. The Albanese government is all about closing Australia down and turning out the lights. Cold, hungry, freezing, and in the dark, is Albo’s, Labor/Greens and the leftwing Lib/Nats plan for Australia. Throw out the fools and get some honest professionals who actually know what needs to be done and how to do it.

  5. How much copper is left to mine.
The government ought to buy it.
Maybe Australia ought to nationalise the oil and build cars again.
Electric vehicles are a waste of copper.
