The use of Isaiah 29:1-6 to describe the destruction of Jerusalem is correct, but verses 5 & 6 describe the removal of the attacking armies in the ‘final battle’ at the end of the ‘age’. That scenario is reiterated in Jeremiah 25:29-31 and that battle and judgment is also referred to in Zechariah 14 and Joel 3, as well as many other places in the scriptures, in both the old and new testaments. The subject is too long for this comment, but suffice it to say that there are to be three judgments at the end of this age: the Christian church, Israel, and the rest of the world – in that order. The purpose: to remove the incorrigibly wicked from the planet, and to cleanse the Earth – a bit like Noah’s flood, except this time it will be by fire. (see also 2Peter 3:5-13).

Certainly Israel is going to be attacked and defeated, by its blood relatives and neighbours. See Psalm 83. Those who remain after this judgment will not be the Zionists of today but a much more circumspect and humbler nation – the nation that God wanted in the first place.

However, the timing of this ‘tribulation’ and the final battle will not occur until various other factors are in place – and this may yet be some time in the future. That does not mean to say Israel’s Arab neighbours will not attack it before then, but it will not result in the annihilation of the State. Maybe a period of internal change and deep reflection, and possibly a change in the geopolitics of the Middle East. One thing is certain, and that is that Israel is busy building up the charge sheet against it and creating more and more reasons to be detested, to the point where someone will take action to stop it.
