“MANY have undertaken to compose an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by the initial eyewitnesses and servants of the word. Therefore, having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.”
So wrote Luke, the Grecian physician and gospel writer around AD60 at the start of his account of the life of Jesus Christ. He goes on to set for his friend Theophilus the historical scene for the conception and birth of John the Baptist: “In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah, and whose wife Elizabeth was a descendant of Aaron. Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and decrees of the Lord. But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well along in years.”
Luke’s gospel goes on to relate the story of Mary and her supernatural encounters: “The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God. Look, even Elizabeth your relative has conceived a son in her old age, and she who was called barren is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.”
So that’s just a glimpse of the beginnings of the Christmas story that has survived two millennia. Modern-day sceptics who would have us “trust the science”, should at least acknowledge the longevity of this story of the supernatural intervention of the divine into human affairs. When analysing the historical time of Jesus’s ‘natal birth,’ another important matter that needs taking into consideration concerns the different chronologies used within The Bible: – around six major calendars have been identified.
The problem facing the lay reader of the NT, or people of faith, who remain mostly unaware of these different calendrical systems, will be those relating to the differing timescales and overlapping of dates. This of course, adds confusion to the presented chronological sequence of the NT.
The main ones are the Lunar Calendar (L) of 354 days [still used by modern Judaism], the Solar Calendar (S) of 364 days, the Roman Julian Calendar (J) of 365.25 [the quarter being added as an extra day every four years], – and the all important Herodian Luni-Solar Calendar (LS).
In addition to these, we have the following varients, North Solar (NS), South Solar (SS), and others. The former series of dates was used as the basis for the Christian era, due to the latter system being that of the priests of the Temple.
In one instance, the Solarists accuse the Moon of corrupting the heavenly system: – because ‘it comes in ten days too soon’ – those who follow it are disobeying God by observing the festivals on the wrong dates (Jub. 6: 36-38).
But the problems really began when Herod assumed the throne in 40 B.C., as he found himself at the beginning of the last millennium of Jewish World History of the Solar calendar (i.e., 3900 Anno Mundi, 41 B.C), hence, – his rule was facing the associated prophecy of the restoration of true Davidic kings in 3920 AM (21 B.C.).
To avoid this prophecy, founded upon the traditional Solar calendar, Herod introduced a ‘revised’ calendar known as the ‘Luni-Solar’ calendar. Under Herod’s revised time frames, the older Solar calendar year of 3900 AM (41 B.C.) was pushed back a year, so that 3901 AM (40 B.C.) was now forcibly aligned with 3900 AM of Herod’s fabricated Luni-Solar calendar.
To counter this, the first anti-Herodian calendrical revision occurred in 21 B.C., – the year of the prophesied, but frustrated restoration of the Davids, as reflected in John. 2: 20. Another adjustment was made in the same year, postponing the restoration to A.D. 29. This event relates to the announcement of Jesus in September A.D. 29, regarding ‘the acceptable year of the Lord’ (Isa. 61: 1-2): meaning the jubilee year for the release of captives.
Thus for example, in the gospel period, the year of 3969 AM equated to Sept A.D. 29 (NS calendar), Sept A.D. 30 (NLS), A.D. 33 (SS), and A.D. 34 (SLS).
With Herod’s adjustment to the existing Jewish Solar calendar, the Magians then used it to deceive Herod at the natal birth of Jesus (Mt. 2: 7-16): the rightful Davidic heir. The Magians tricked Herod not only about the place, but also the time, – wasting two years of the king’s time.
When Herod asked them, – ‘what is the time when the heir of David should be born?,’ the Magians replied, – ‘the southern generation year.’ For the Magian Solarists, this meant 3930 (SS), or March 7 B.C.: – the time when Jesus was actually born. But for Herod, using his revised Luni-Solar calendar, it meant 5 B.C. (3930 SLS).
Having realised his mistake, Herod then went looking for children of two years old.
This important point was behind the saying, – ‘the Jews do not keep the same time as the Samaritans’ (John. 4: 9), – as the Jews were Herodians, and their chronology was two later than the Samaritans.

The Gospel of Luke does in fact preserve an accurate account of this ceremony, – as Jesus was twelve years old in March A.D. 6.
When Mary ‘brought him forth,’ she was enacting the ceremonial rite whereby the boy was separated from his mother, whereas the mention of him being ‘wrapped in cloths,’ refers to the boy’s customary clothing in the rite’s ceremonial vestments.

Apart from the fact that our Lord and Saviour was never born at that time of the year, most people don’t want Christ in Christmas.
If there is to be a celebration of the birth of Christ, it should be a gathering (or mass) of people and family at an earlier time of year (He was born before the winter snows set in, probably around the “Feast of Tabernacles” but we don’t have an exact time).
Perhaps it should be called “Santamas” which is probably more appropriate. Most people do not want Jesus. As Homer questioned Bart (or Bart questioned Homer) in an episode of the Simpsons…”What is the true meaning of Christmas?”, the reply was “the birth of Santa”.

Christ’s Mass or Christmas.
The Ante Nicene Fathers of the Church (bishops, many of them martyred) ordained by the Apostles refer to the eucharist or mass (the sending : ite missa est). The Church has a liturgical year with the Pasch of the Easter (named for the season) Triduum that is Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Sabbato and Dominica : the Day of the Lord.

The sacrifice of the mass is the re-presentation of the one , eternal sacrifice of Jesus Christ to all generations of time that His Body, the Church, may feed upon His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity and be incorporated into His body, live in Him, be converted to Him, take up His cross and bear it in fellowship with Him , die in Him and be resurrected in Him. It is not like a birthday celebration of an actual known date. The Church holds the communion Feast of the Holy Nativity at that time of the year just like it holds the communion Feast of the Kingship of Christ over all nations at the end of October. It is not an actual historical anniversary of a known date that is being commemorated but rather the liturgical year of the Church configures events and truths of eternal significance to a 365 day cycle. These events / truths testified in sacred scripture become feasts of the Church.
And Christ’s Mass falls after the holy season of Advent with its Antiphons and the reading of the prophecies of the Messiah. “Truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in yourselves.” John 6:53. This is the daily and Sunday mass and the Feasts of the Church.

Everything about Jesus coming to earth to save mankind from Adam and Eve’s bad choice is worthy of celebration. We are here to be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and have dominion over it, and let us fully enjoy what our Great God has provided.

It would stand to reason, that since all of these denominations love and embrace “Christ-Mass”, that December 25th is the great homecoming day, when all of the Protestants become Catholic for a day. Thus, all of the so-called Protestant churches could sing to the Pope that popular song “I’ll be home for Christmas.”
