Russia’s decades long attempt to integrate with the west is not only over, but even cooperation is now off the cards, a senior strategist in Moscow has warned. Aleksey Drobinin, head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Foreign Policy Planning Department, believes that future dealings can only take place on a “transactional” basis.
Drobinin, head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Foreign Policy Planning Department, was writing in a keynote article published on Wednesday. He explained that the West is trying to protect its power from an emerging multipolar world, which means countries like Russia which reject Washington’s so-called “rules-based order” must resist.
Thus, after the present crisis in Ukraine, there can be no return to attempts at a rapprochement with the US and its allies, he argues.
Russia’s attack against Ukraine became “a milestone on the path towards a new world order,” Drobinin added. He heads a department responsible for academic research and strategic planning on behalf of the ministry.
“Regardless of the duration and outcome of the special military operation, even now we can acknowledge that a three-decade-long period of mostly constructive, if problematic cooperation with the West is gone for good,” he said.
The breakup dispels “the last illusions” that Russians may have about the merits of a “friendly takeover” of their country by the US and its allies after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the analyst added.
He assessed that amid the current confrontation, the “irrational equation of Western with ‘progressive,’ Western with ‘attractive’” by some people in Russia was no longer “up to date.” Such moods, he said, persisted in various forms since the time of Peter the Great, who ruled the country in the late 17th and early 18th century.
The 3,500-word article gives a preview of the upcoming update of Russia’s foreign-policy concept, a document that guides the work of the foreign ministry and other parts of the government. Moscow perceives as inevitable the arrival of a multipolar world order, which would replace a brief moment of US-led unipolarity that emerged in the 1990s.
Putin predicts ‘revolutionary’ changes
Several “civilizational” blocs, each led by a powerful nation like the US, China or Russia, will be the stakeholders in the future, but the exact configuration is yet to be determined, Drobinin predicted.
The diplomat accused the US of actively undermining international institutions and of otherwise destabilizing the world in a fruitless attempt to delay the reduction of its power. Russia is at the forefront of opposing Washington, he said.
“We have to realize that the Russophobic-minded collective West is a dangerous and motivated … opponent that remains strong, has a leading military-technological potential and controls a large portion of the global markets, financial resources, logistical chains and flows of information,” he warned.
Russia will pursue closer ties with non-Western players, foster regional integration, help create new international financial and management mechanisms that would be free from Western control and otherwise ensure that it would have a say in how the future multipolar world would work, Drobinin said.

“For many [nations] the acute problems are access to cheap energy (not a switch to ‘green’ technology), socio-economic development (not the ultraliberal version of human rights), security and sovereign equality (not the imposed Western-style electoral democracy),” he argued.
As for dealing with nations that Russia deems “unfriendly,” it is currently “only possible on a one-shot transactional basis … in cases where Russia would benefit and where there is no suitable alternative,” the diplomat said.
According to Drobinin, Moscow hopes that Europe would distance itself from Washington and become a force of its own, as political forces pursuing sovereignty and national interests gain power.
Russia could “offer to Europe a scheme of future cooperation that would on the one hand support autonomist desires of the Europeans and on the other hand would ensure that our nation would not face any kinds of threats from the European direction,” he wrote. Pursuing that goal would be a challenge, he acknowledged.#
“We will return Crimea by any means that we consider correct, without consulting with other countries,” Zelensky said, according to Strana.ua, a Ukrainian news outlet. “I know that Crimea is with Ukraine, [and] is waiting for us to return. We need to win the fight against Russian aggression. Therefore, we need to free Crimea from occupation.”

Alison… Thank you for this most excellent post. I totally agree with everything Lander says and have always believed that Australia is just being used by the US for its own nefarious purposes. They have done, and are doing, this to other nations as well who will be left holding the bag and thrown under the bus in the end – there are many examples of this, e.g. Libya, Afghanistan, Taiwan, Ukraine. When the US holds out the hand of friendship, one should be very wary indeed.
China has never been our enemy but has been painted to be so because Australia follows US rhetoric. If the US uses us in a proxy war, Australia will become a wasteland – that much is certain. Our government keeps using words like our ‘national interest’ but they are not practising this at all.

His experience in foreign affairs, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, goes back more than 50 years, and includes the period when Australia pursued a policy independent to the United States by recognising the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1972 (the USA did not formally recognise the PRC until 1979).

The streak of independence Australia displayed in the early 1970s, and which motivated John Lander his entire diplomatic career, has long since disappeared.
John Lander is warning that this has implications for Australia’s security that are even more grave today.
In the interview, he gives a different perspective on the war danger to that expressed by former US military officer Scott Ritter—the courageous weapons inspector who tried to stop the illegal invasion of Iraq in 2003—who warned that Pelosi was provoking a US war with China over Taiwan that America couldn’t win.
John Lander insists that the US war planners have no intention of directly fighting a war with China, because of the very real danger it could escalate to a nuclear exchange.
Rather, they are planning to use Taiwan to fight a proxy war against China, hoping to “weaken” China, just as US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin admitted America is using Ukraine to “weaken” Russia.
The United States, he warns, is priming Australia to also be its proxy against China; the USA would arm Australia to fight China but avoid engaging China directly.

There is much truth in your detail. The pre planning and the fix were in, hence the double cross. If Hitler wasn’t part of the plan he certainly got played and took the German people with him. Reminds me of Saddam Hussein being set up as a US darling, then played into hitting on Kuwait leaving Iraq wasted, the Arab coalition destroyed and the Middle East even more under the Money Changers without opposition!.
Germany was set up to fall even in WW1, before Hitler, taking the Russian monarchy and the rest of Europe down with it, ready for plunder. They were powerful and had the capacity to dominate the European and international scene outside the control of the Money Changers. What better way to castrate both of them than by getting them to cut each other to pieces?
20 years after WW1 , with the power of the Habsburg, Russian and Ottoman Empires greatly diminished and Europe and the Federal Reserve and hence the US safely in their hands the time was ripe for the WW2 mop up operation which laid the groundwork for broader global expansion and control.
Pitting the bulls against each other required their training, conditioning and preparation by their trainers and fight promoters if the widest possible audience was to pay the price of the entertainment which filled the coffers of the Money Changers. After the fight, they put the rings through the bulls’ noses again and kept them separated till the next build up for the next battle of the bulls event.

Where was the organised resistance to the Germans? The impregnable Maginot Line simply disappeared! Poland was invaded by the Red Army in 1920.

An immense refugee influx of Ukrainians into Moldova and Poland – all identifying as Ukrainian, some Russian speakers among them, all speaking Ukrainian with Ukrainian customs – which are much the same as Polish. As far as I can tell the Ukraine was always a contested geographic region, not a country, In 1917 the Soviet communists came to power, declared the region a republic and proclaimed it “independent” from the newly created Socialist Russian republic. It was declared such by Soviet Communist decree which the ethnic populations were obliged to accept whether they liked it or not.
The population of the region consisted of ethnic Russians, Poles, Lithuanians, Hungarians, Romanians, Turks, etc.
As far as I know there has never been an opportunity for the various peoples inhabiting the region to declare themselves as one “nation”. The implied concept of Ukrainian nationhood imposed by the Communists is now being forced by the “democratic” West on ALL the ethnic groups living in the region.
For example, of the 40 million population, the Poles and the Lithuanians in the western part of the Ukrainian region clearly distinguish themselves politically, culturally and linguistically from some 20 million Russians in the East.
That does not suggest “nationhood” but a forced marriage of the people, whether they like it or not. It took place at the point of a gun and it is still being pressed today, also at the point of a gun.
