A NSW parliamentary inquiry has been established to inquire into and report on the impact of the
phase-out of Australian live sheep exports by sea on New South Wales. In particular, the inquiry will consider the economic and social considerations of such a phase-out on regional communities and animal welfare considerations.
The Chairman of Portfolio Committee No. 4, the Hon Mark Banasiak MLC said: “The inquiry will investigate the impact of the Australian Government’s phase-out of live sheep exports on regional communities in New South Wales, including, but not limited to, transport operators, fodder and grain producers and local meat processors. The inquiry will assess those impacts, along with other factors such as the implications for demand for New South Wales mutton and whether the phase-out will impact on the NSW Government’s revenue and bottom line.”
Mr Banasiak continued: “The inquiry will also examine the reasons for the Australian Government’s phase-out of live sheep exports, potential economic losses from the phase-out, the impact on jobs across regional New South Wales, possible alternative markets, opportunities and income streams for New South Wales sheep producers, and whether the Australian Government should provide compensation to sheep producers in this state.”
Mr Banasiak concluded: “Additionally, the inquiry will seek to identify examples of graziers in other regions or countries that have successfully transitioned away from live exports and assess broader community views in New South Wales of the live export industry.”
The committee is calling for public submissions, which may be lodged via the committee’s website until 20 September 2024. An online questionnaire will also be established and be available on the committee’s website.
I think the photos of animal mistreatment are from old times and nowadays they are mostly suffering from boredom. In the wild there is animal suffering too. One video I remember a small forest deer walking through the trees with a baby deer following, a huge hairy monkey ran down a tree and grabbed the little bambi and ran back up the tree with it then started eating bambi’s leg, while the mother deer looked up, the monkey ate both back legs,and mother deer and baby were looking at each other expressionless until the legs were eaten then bambi died. Such is life, there is a lot of discomfort and things eating one another. It’s so disgusting.
My opinion if you can’t accept life, best not to have kids rather than suggest you are on the moral high ground and that other people should stay away from kids. You are actually an apex predator and you are too accustomed to luxury.

as I have seen cruelty beyond my feelings for those I am now in respect for our dear friends of the side to ban life transport. some hidden camera of being abused and animals dead on the floor of a ship gave me a lot to think. As we here in Australia can be a leader therefore to give an example and share the knowledge and insight WHY, it would be a light for many people and for our friends then to make a big Change for our Care. and by this I mention just also in combination, even if this is another Agenda our Full Term ABortion 9 months…babies born alive and left to die…..
Of course some might say this is another thing””, But it shows that Innocent Ones are the most abused ones…and I do Not think it serves our own human status….Thank you dear People…Know it is long and not so perfect expressed. I am human and try my best with this….
Let’s just hope this isn’t an expensive exersize in finding a way to maintain live export of Australian animals. Money and vested interest always comes before kindness.
A total ban on export of ALL Australian animals; horses, pigs, cattle, etc., like other countries seem to have implemented easily is what’s right.
Animals suffer at length and profoundly not only in the export process but in the fact those countries they’re exported to have no animal welfare protections – they are subject to awful pain and cruelty in order to conform to antiquated butchering standards. It’s nothing but extreme trauma.
Animals rely on us, the superior beings, to ensure they’re treated humanely. Let’s live up to it and do all we can to support this ban.
Enough. If you’re willing to turn a blind eye to that kind of suffering just so we can provide an export “market” there’s something very wrong with you – stay away from children please.
