Queensland Rail should use electric  locomotives for passenger trains

QR is providing a poor rail service to regional Qld.

It has 4 Tilt trains, Currently, one of the electric ones is being renovated, and the Cairns train is doubling up as the Bundaberg train, reducing passenger seating by 25%.

When one Tilt Train is out of service, QR should substitute an older-type train (eg Sunlander carriages) pulled by an electric loco, because diesel locos are too slow.

In the 1990s and 2000s, the Sunlander and the Spirit of the Outback were pulled by electric locomotives of Class 3900. Those locos were based in Rockhampton, and operated south to Brisbane and West to Emerald.

QR used them to pull passenger trains from Brisbane to Rockhampton and Emerald. When coal exports increased, the 3900s were adapted to pull coal trains instead of passenger trains.

Since then QR only uses diesel locos for passenger trains, and the trains are much slower.

This is a downgrade of QR’s service, and they’ve got away with it because nobody seems to have pointed out what they’ve done.

Subsequently the coal rail network was sold off to Aurizon.

Aurizon has 11 locos of 3900 class in storage, because they have purchased more powerful locos for coal trains. They also have 15 locos of 3500/3600 class in storage. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurizon

QR should negotiate to buy back some of them from Aurizon, and refit or rebuild them for passenger trains and general freight.

  1. Net Zero a good excuse for building Rail Infrastructure

Readers may or may not agree with Net Zero.

But it makes a good excuse for building rail infrastructure and getting trucks off the highways as much as possible.

Inland Rail, the Melbourne to Brisbane project, is proceeding without any discussion of Net Zero. They plan a double-stacked container line, but, in their literature, do not consider electrification. Even if they did not electrify the line at first, they could do it later – if they built tunnels, bridges etc which would allow for it. But I do not find any mention of this in their literature.

Yet, double-stacked electric freight trains already operate in India and some other countries.

What about the East-West double-stacked freight line? They also should consider electrification. But they don’t even talk about it.

The Inland Rail project are currently building only a SINGLE-TRACK line. Surely you believe with me that this is short-sighted?

In addition to Inland Rail, we need a new double-track standard gauge fast freight line from Cairns to Brisbane to Sydney and Melbourne. It could carry passengers too, but would not be high-speed like a dedicated passenger line.

That freight line should be electrified at 25 kv AC, as Qld & WA use.

The North Coast line in NSW from Maitland to Brisbane is single-track and winding (like a bullock-wagon track). The Qld line is single-track from Nambour to Cairns. Both should be replaced with 25 kv AC double-track standard gauge lines.

In Qld a new freight/express passenger dual track dual-gauge 25 kv AC line should be built from Brisbane to Nambour, connecting with the current narrow-gauge interurban line (also 25 kv AC) at Nambour, and thence dual gauge to Cairns.

25 kv AC trains cannot run on the 1.5kv DC suburban and interurban lines surrounding Sydney and Melbourne. I believe that a new 25 kv AC freight/express passenger line should be built from Maitland to Wisemans Ferry, along the Old Northern Road, and enter Sydney via Dural. That route is not mountainous or steep.

But in the future the whole Qld rural network should be converted to standard gauge. Why do we think this is beyond us? Many lines in India have been converted from Narrow Gauge to Broad Gauge. During World War II, a huge Public Works program was implemented in Australia, overseen by Ted Theodore. It’s wonderful how the threat of invasion can change what’s deemed possible.

We need to escape from the “Post-Industrial” mindset which has seen us neglect manufacturing, self-sufficiency and independence.

The new rail lines will go through some back yards and some National Parks; and this will elicit objections. But if Net Zero is the priority, such objections should be overridden.

When I travelled across India by train in 2008, I did not see any container trains. But now, India operates double-stacked electric freight trains with overhead pantographs.

China, after experimenting with its first high-speed trains, built a network covering most of its territory in just ten years. Yet in the US, the planned high-speed line from Los Angeles to San Francisco failed. Is there a lesson here? Americans are not even talking about it. But do we have the luxury of keeping our heads in the sand? And chopping off all original thinkers as politically incorrect? Can the Consuming West learn from the Producing East?

Funding is a big issue, and Taxation is an associated issue. Since Privatisation in the 1980s, tax rates have been greatly cut, and governments spend $ on Welfare rather than on building the economy, as they did before Privatisation.

Multinational Companies use Tax Havens, Transfer Pricing, and Double-Taxation Agreements to avoid paying the taxes which COULD be used to build the economy. The current funding source is exploitative financing by the private banks, which greatly increases the cost of projects.

The only alternative is financing by the Central Bank. There are precedents for this, but the private banks will do anything to stop it.

If Net Zero is so important, we should legislate for the new rail projects to be financed by the RBA, at low interest. The Trans-Australia Railway and the Australian Shipping Line were funded that way. The Bank of Japan directly buys shares in Japanese companies; it is the biggest shareholder in many Japanese companies. It’s nationalisation by stealth, but so what? It’s better than having the country owned by Foreign Investors.

Aurizon is buying hybrid locos, but green hydrogen, green ammonia etc are still untested when it comes to heavy freight. I doubt that hydrogen locos would have anywhere near the power and range of electric or diesel ones. For decades I opposed nuclear power, but if we must give up coal and oil, I now believe we need electric freight trains and nuclear power.

A paper by Engineers Australia, titled The Future of Rail Transport: A Transport Australia Society Discussion Paper, contains a lot of jargon and fails to consider practical issues such as the above.

    Dated March 2022, it’s at https://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/sites/default/files/resource-files/2022-03/Future_of_Rail_Transport_Discussion_Paper_%28TAs%29.pdf

We need new ideas from outside the current bureaucratic thinking; we need to get rid of the red tape/green tape which makes major development approvals take decades. If Net Zero is so important, we must change the current entrenched system. If for no other reason, because China and India have found ways to bypass the roadblocks which afflict us.

  2. AUSTRALIA, NAME YOUR ENEMY

Jews declare themselves to be anti-White

    https://www.winterwatch.net/2016/06/the-jew-harvard-professor-noel-ignatiev-on-how-terrible-white-people-are/

Don’t Deny Jewish History and Culture by Calling Us “White”

Micha Danzig — Forward (New York)

    http://forward.com/scribe/355864/anti-semitism-in-america-is-nothing-new-dont-deny-jewish-history-and-cultur/

… Anyone that understands Jewish history as well as the history of the entire development of the idea or construct of the “white race” should understand how that no Jew, Ashkenazi or otherwise, is “white.” While it is certainly the case that many Ashkenazi Jews today in America (such as Ruiz-Grossman) identify as “white,” that doesn’t make it any more accurate or appropriate … This is not merely a semantic issue. Jews are not “white.” We are a tribal people from the Levant … No one that wants to end anti-Semitism and to fight against bigotry and racism should be claiming that Jews are “white.”

  3. Nothing like a typo in both the first and last sentences! Lindesymonds hits the nail on the head, and it’s regional Queensland’s rail network. Apologies.

  4. Lindesymonds’ first first sentence hits the nsil on the head. The rest hammer it home.

Nothing will stop our unapproved, unauthorised destruction UNTIL we withdraw from the democidal international agreements and treaties designed specifically for that purpose, and UNTIL we bin the mocking 17 Sustainable Development Goals on all our
depart”mental” government websites virtue-signalling the twin climate/scamdemic crimes against humanity.

Hidden for decades in plain sight, but invisible to the masses even while being mRNA-ed and defrauded to death, their carnage now spitefully slaps the sentient awake daily:

Australia’s most recent 40% excess mortality rate. Upwards of 600,000 homeless/dehoused Queenslanders. The the Albanese regime’s 1.2 million per annum immigration policy invasion with its subsidised dispersal across the public and private sectors. The prerequisite eradication of Australia’s life-blood, home-grown, small-to-medium and family business sector, along with its two-million plus employees — and the extinctions go on across ALL decimated sectors of our “decarbonising” corporate stakeholder economy.

Yes, of course, Queensland Labor (or any other globally compliant corporate party) is unable to manage our basic rail network! It’s prerequisite to destroy everything for their greater good. And yes, all these sane and sensible comments to properly run and improve regionsl Queensland’s are instructive.

  5. The new party proposal has been grasped by Katters but as usual Pauline has ignored the freedom movement and is sailing off by herself, and Ashby of course. We often wonder if she still supports the Liberals? Editor

  6. This is just an opinion, but the greater argument should be for conversion of the entire road freight network to rail, and to expand on that. We can make our own engines, hoppers, flat tops and carriages and the land wasted on mororways can be released for housing. All mass urban transport should be switched to rapid rail wherever possible. Cities that did not go down this route have regretted it bitterly ever since.

Meanwhile, Queensland has many moribund rail tracks to be restored. The insane ALP/greenies cannot grasp the value of interlinked resources, with Australian steel being converted into industrial infrastructure with Australian smelter coal furnaces also providing electricity. and the enhanced atmospheric CO2 generating plant and tree growth on this desert continent. Somebody explain to greenies that in the past 200 million years there have been only two eras of such low CO2, then and now. The previous low level nearly ended life on earth and this one may do likewise. But then, this is apparently what they want. In the now-famous Jurassic, there was five times more CO2 than now. Hardly an extinction event.

All economics points to a coal-steel-coal-electricity-rail continuum. From that point onwards, the recommendations of Peter Mieir (of Childers?) are essential for trade development and human transport.

If our egotistical political messiahs… Hanson, Katter, et al… formed a single party with no personal names, this could become a reality. But, no, they would rather navigate their glorious ships under their personal banners and even under the waves.

Fortunately, others of us have other ideas.

  7. We’ve got a few refugees turning up in WA, they seem well prepared for living in the car for a while, these are not ferals, they are middle-class refugees. Sadly the underclasses are still brainwashed into thinking “the left” of politics will help them. No, your only chance is to help yourself and the left these days will help themselves to whatever you have struggled to produce. Look how they all sell off assets and spend the money on pork barrelling or mRNA injections, how could anyone vote for them.

  8. The UN CoVID Regime and Communist Takeover is doing such an excellent job of wrecking Australia as a Western nation and first world economy as per the Strong / Gorbachev dictate of the Earth Charter. The Incompetence Card can still take every trick. The right grip seals every deal and the standard issue communist democide they are currently running. As the deaths continue to mount every year, it will be the majority demographic where the toll will hit as the replacement is being imported currently by the 100,00 / month.

We could build and run maglev trains in this country. Invented by an American and engineered by a French born American. Australians could improve on it, build it, run it and maintain a maglev network.

What we will probably get is whirly gig wind farms and power recharge stations which have to run on fossil fuel to recharge ET and a higher sustainable development score.

Economically we are f*cked. Demographically we are far**ked.

For sure we will need the operational management of Great China and its insectoid system of digital currency, social credit system and the entire list of Mao rules in order to perform the most basic social tasks.
