Ararat Rural City Council has agreed to help fund a local feature film production which will focus on the lives of farmers in rural and regional Australia.
“Just A Farmer”, due in cinemas in Ballarat on 21/03/2024, is a compelling drama produced in the Western District of Victoria that authentically portrays the impact of suicide on a rural Australian family, shedding light on critical mental health issues in farming communities.
Writer, producer and actress Leila McDougall hopes that the film will highlight the issue of mental health in rural Australia and encourage people to seek help. Leila explained that she felt compelled to tell the story after watching suicide rates in rural communities grow.
“A farmer dies by suicide every 10 days, and people in rural populations are twice as likely to die by suicide,” she said.
The film is more than a narrative; it’s a testament to the resilience of farming families. It addresses mental health, generational trauma, and the struggles of rural life with warmth and heart—a universal story with a powerful emotional connection. The film’s purpose is to be a catalyst for conversation and change.

They should be on the streets but there is a lot of fluoride in VB. Ed
Researchers say yes chemicals affect behaviour. Ed
Suicide is a very sad subject.
We are speaking about people who have come to the end of their ability to cope or endure something that appears hopeless to them at the time. So as this film has a primary purpose to encourage dialogue and share other’s burdens I’m sure that people at risk in their mental health can be assisted. When feeling very down, people need to have loving, caring relations around them. Changing the thought patterns can lead to changing the decisions made. Opening up this subject to public awareness is a positive step forward to saving lives. God bless the endeavour.
This is interesting about how chemicals are affecting our men. After listening to this, I wonder if the neurogenic class pesticides are contributing towards the mental health issues in our young farmers.

The DPI needs to be called the Dept of Primitive Industries as their policies are primitive. They haven’t helped farmers at all for many years. In 1970s we had a distant neighbour shoot himself and about 20 years ago one of his sons committed suicide as well who would have been in his forties. We are in northern NSW which may be better than Vic but the same things are happening – if you are a small landowner it is very hard to make a living to even pay your land rates. My brother owns the farm we are on and just says things have gone up compared to what a farmer gets for his produce. My brother cannot afford to go to dentist so has top front teeth missing, his girlfriend shaves his hair, the timber home hasn’t been painted for 40 years, he has only had old cars bought for $1000-2000, the tractor needs $800 worth of servicing done to it and he cannot pay his rates so the interest keeps piling up on them. His wife left him after 11 years marriage, no children as no money to keep them I guess. He cannot get sickness benefits even though he has had Q-Fever since he was a teenager because he owns too many assets (farm) given to him from our parents and now he has to work till he is 67. He is now bent over with stomach problems and waiting on a hernia operation. My brother was never suicidal though as he has no wife and children to keep or mortgage and doesn’t worry about what other people think even though the farm is in ruins, the RSPCA came several times because he had thin cattle which turned out to be Bovine Johne’s disease so he had to get rid of all his cattle and he gets notices served to him for not paying rates. But he is OK as he is going to lease some of farm and some family relatives are going to buy into farm which helps pay the rates. Yes, farmers need help otherwise we will lose our food supply.
Desperate people do desperate things. And it’s often nothing to do with mental health.
It’s the mugs pushing the people into desperate situations that need TREATMENT!
The whole of Victoria is on a suicide trip. How else does one explain the Victorians tolerating what’s being done in Victoria?
The statistics Leila highlighted are accurate, and born out by the 2020 ABS data for age-specific suicide rates by sex which show that on average the rate of suicide amongst men was close to three times that of women, depending on the age group. Whilst in the 85+ age group, the rate was a staggering four times higher for men. Then you can double those rates again in rural areas as Leila described. Family breakdown is another common cause of suicide amongst men with the Family law courts and family law which is heavily stacked against men, and lack of funding for men’s issues including suicide preventation. It’s no surprise that most of the bureaucrats handing out the funding for mental health services are feminists who are cheered on by the mostly female press core. Men’s health ends up getting a pittance, so men just end up suffering in silence until they become another statistic.
The suicide rate in rural communities is not a ‘mental health issue’.
Here are Australian families who have farmed for generations. These primary producers are the most robust, resilient, independent and capable people in the entire nation.
The Communist Takeover in this country is persecuting them by every means it can concoct to drive them off their farms, take their land and destroy their livlihood. And when the patrimony of their generations is lost to them and their families, they kill themselves.
This is not a problem of ‘bipolar’ vs ‘unipolar’ depression. This is about Communist tyranny, oppression, banking and legal bastardry, Freemasonry and the police.
Ultimately it is about the Simples approach to banking bastardry [but I repeat myself] and the market.
Maggoo, how very tragic, what reason did the DPI give to take the poor farmer’s cow family?
So-called “mental health” issues is directly caused (in these cases) by the gov’t. In my small rural community, in 2019, the DPI took, at gunpoint, a farmers cows which he had for many years. They were his family. The DPI also threatened everyone using their mobiles capturing the abduction of his cows. He then took himself down to the end of his property and ended his life. That is not called “mental health”.
