Mt Isa MP Robbie Katter will don his boxing gloves on Nov 7 at Charters Towers at the Grit, Gravel and Gloves tournament

Member for Traeger and Katter’s Australian Party Leader Robbie Katter will don his boxing gloves to bolster this year’s Grit, Gravel and Gloves in the Goldfields, where headliner Riley “The Candy Man” Candy will defend his title in front of his hometown crowd.

Robbie Katter will size up against Charters Towers fitness figure, businessman and former schoolboy mate Tony Scholes, ahead of the 10-round showdown between The Candy Man and Irish challenger James Power for the Australian National Boxing Federation Australian Middleweight Championship.

Mr Katter said the night was shaping up to be a successful follow-up to last year’s inaugural event.

“I was asked to take part to help boost the event around The Candy Man’s title defence – he’s posted nine wins, one loss, and seven knockouts, and will put on a great show for the Charters Towers crowd,” he said.

“The Australian Championship is known as one of the highest honours in Australia’s professional boxing and I’m honoured to be a part of it.”

Mr Katter will face off against owner of CT Fitness, and former schoolmate, Tony Scholes.

“Tony is from Julia Creek and an old schoolmate of mine.

“Granted, he owns a gym, but our size difference will hopefully award me a bit of an advantage and help even out the playing field.”

Mr Katter said he was looking forward to swapping political blows in Parliament House for real punches in the boxing ring.

“Events like these are fun to let off some steam and bring communities together for an enjoyable night and impressive display of skill and perseverance.”

Mr Katter previously completed against former rugby league great John Doyle in a charity match, and supported the Best in the West boxing tournament in Mount Isa presented by First Nations Boxing in conjunction with the Brothers in Arms Boxing Club.

The Grit, Gravel and Gloves in the Goldfields event will take place on Saturday, 7th November at the Dalrymple Equestrian Centre in Charters Towers.
