BP's Perth oil refinery closed down in 2021. leaving Australia with just two plus a small operation in Eromanga, 1000km west of Brisbane.

Australia and America run on diesel. Labor refuses to remove 53.7 cents per litre federal excise taking diesel to $2.65

Diesel costs $12 AUD per gallon in Australia today

By Mike Adams

Months ago, I warned that diesel would hit $8 to $10 a gallon. Back then, many uninformed people dismissed me as an alarmist. But as I write this, San Francisco has already blown past the $8 mark, and the rest of California is not far behind [1]. Chevron has officially warned that the state is facing a historic fuel crisis as diesel prices hit record highs [2]. This isn’t a supply chain hiccup that will resolve itself with a new shipment. The time bomb I warned about isn’t ticking anymore — it has already detonated.

The most important thing to understand about this crisis is that it is not about crude oil. The economy doesn’t run on crude. It runs on diesel. Crude is an inert raw material until it passes through a complex — and increasingly scarce — refining system. As I have said before, the diesel crack spread — the difference between what a barrel of crude costs and what the refined products sell for — is the single most important economic number in America. In August, that spread hit $102 over crude, and it just went over $108 two days ago [3].

This is not a market fluctuation; it is the signal of a structural collapse in fuel supply. When distilling a barrel of oil into diesel becomes that profitable, it only means one thing: we have run out of refineries, not oil.

Refinery Closures and Global Disruptions: A Perfect Storm

The “perfect storm” that is strangling our fuel supply is the result of deliberate policy choices and geopolitical blunders colliding at the worst possible moment. For years, we watched the closure of refineries across the nation. In California alone, the Phillips 66 and Valero facilities shut down, slashing the state’s refining capacity by over 20 percent [4]. These closures are removing a massive 429,000 barrels per day of production from the market at a time when we need every single drop. The system cannot sustain these losses; there are no new refineries coming online to replace them anytime soon.

This domestic shortage is now being compounded by a global crisis that the political class seems utterly unable to comprehend. We have effectively lost the Persian Gulf as a production hub. The Strait of Hormuz continues to be contested, choking off energy and fertilizer shipments [5]. Concurrently, Russia’s refining capacity is being hammered by drone strikes, taking yet more supply off the global market [6]. Inventories are sitting at a 25-day supply — the lowest for this time of year since 1951 [7]. The result is a global scramble for a resource that is simply not there. This isn’t a temporary disruption; it’s a permanent loss of supply capacity.

Diesel Powers Everything: Your Groceries, Your Construction, Your Economy

The reason diesel scarcity is such an existential threat to the economy is that it is the fuel of physical reality. It moves the 18-wheelers that bring food to your grocery store, the tractors that plant and harvest your crops, the trains that ship raw materials, and the construction equipment that builds our homes and hospitals. When diesel prices double, the cost of every single one of those activities doubles.

Farmers in the Corn Belt are facing their worst crisis in four decades as input costs skyrocket, threatening loan defaults and forcing them to reduce acreage [8]. If the farmer can’t afford fuel to run his tractor, he doesn’t plant. If he doesn’t plant, there is no food. It is as simple and as terrifying as that.

We are already seeing the effects of “demand destruction” as this crisis intensifies. Families are starting to sell off their diesel trucks because they can’t afford to fill the tank. I am witnessing farmers skipping planting seasons because the cost of a single pass over their field with a tractor now exceeds their potential profit. Construction contracts are being canceled because the cost of moving dirt and pouring concrete has become prohibitive. The economic damage is spreading far beyond the fuel pump and will result in the most brutal inflation Americans have experienced in decades [9].

This is not about feeling pain at the pump; this is about the cost of every manufactured good, every food item, and every service that depends on transportation — which is to say, everything.

My Personal Response: Selling My Diesel Truck and Betting on Solar

I have to be honest about my own response to this crisis. I have prepared for disruptions for years; I have stored over 1,000 gallons of diesel on my property, purchased at an average of about $2.50 per gallon. But the game has changed. I am now selling my personal diesel truck. The road diesel I would need to buy at the pump, on top of taxes, has become an irrational luxury. Even with my reserves for emergency farm operations, I refuse to participate in this broken system that sees fuel as a revenue stream to be taxed and manipulated rather than a necessity of life.

This is why I have shifted my strategy toward self-reliance and decentralized energy. I now strongly advocate for home solar power and electric vehicles for daily commuting. Think about it: a solar panel on your roof allows you to “refuel” from sunlight, a source of energy that no politician, no oil cartel, and no bureaucracy can tax into oblivion or shut down. EVs have their own problems — as I have pointed out regarding charger efficiency [10] — but the sun is free, and it is more reliable than any promise the Pentagon or federal government has ever made.

Taking back control of my energy needs, relying on the sun and natural systems, is the only rational way to insulate myself from the man-made insanity of an economy addicted to government-sponsored, war-driven fuel scarcity.

The Politics of Diesel: Lies and No End in Sight

As an investigative journalist, I feel a responsibility to call out the rampant dishonesty that got us here. U.S. political leadership has repeatedly lied about the situation in Iran. They told us the Strait of Hormuz would reopen, that the “war is over,” and that we had defeated Iran. All of this has been proven false [11]. They claimed the “oil glut” would keep prices low forever, a narrative designed for pacification, not for informing the public about the profound fragility of our energy system [12]. We are now paying for this hubris with every gallon of fuel we buy.

Looking ahead, I see no relief on the horizon. With refinery capacity permanently taken down, war continuing in the Middle East and Black Sea, and fertilizer supplies choked off, this crisis will not end in the next year or two [13]. We cannot drill our way out when there are no spare refineries to process the crude. The administration is busy threatening economic warfare on foreign nations while the American farmer and trucker go broke at home [14].

Voters need to hold incumbents accountable in the midterms. This diesel crisis is not an act of God; it is a man-made catastrophe of war, mismanagement, and a profound failure of leadership. And until that leadership changes, the economy will continue to pay the ultimate price.

The Consequences: A Call for Decentralization

The diesel crisis is not just a story about fuel; it is a symptom of a civilization that has centralized every critical resource to the point of utter fragility. We have allowed corrupt governments and greedy corporations to dictate the price and availability of our most vital necessities. We have allowed a war machine to prioritize geopolitics over the food supply of its own citizens. The result is that our entire economy — from the food on our tables to the roofs over our heads — is one refinery fire away from collapse.

How do we respond? We don’t look to Washington for salvation. We look to our own backyards. We must decentralize our lives because centralized systems are controlled by those who would sacrifice us for their own strategic ends. Start growing your own food, install solar panels, and build community networks of support. The politicians who engineered this disaster are not coming to save you; they are busy planning the next bombing campaign. In the end, self-reliance is the only true freedom we have left [12]. The era of cheap, abundant fuel is over. The era of personal empowerment and decentralized energy has begun.

Users will pay, the department of monos, bikes, trikes scooters and skateboards will see to it that banksters maintain control of comprehensive insurance cover.

  2. 15 minute cities and villages will soon make diesel and petrol redundant and unnecessary for most of us. The apparatchiks have not been building bike lanes throughout metropolitan areas for no reason, even though they’ve been mostly empty and pretty much unused for years now. It’s so good our public servants are thinking ahead for us.

  4. This pertains to Australia’s now dire need of petroleum products. As a youngster I lived in a non industrial area south of Fremantle. Known as Kwinana, named after a ship wreck on our beach. BP built a refinery from ground up in 1951/52. My father worked on the construction. Oil has been refined here until recently when it was decided by the “powers to be” that it was cheaper to import from Singapore. So Kwinana has become a storage facility only. Now only two refineries exist in Australia, both on east coast.

Oil has been discovered throughout Australia and off-shore in such places as Barrow Island and in recent years a huge basin of oil in South Australia has been drilled and capped.

There is apparently no shortage of oil in Australia’s territory however our politicians and oil industry management don’t give a dam about our security. In today’s world, oil is nearly as essential as our water supply. Even though our politicians are forever preaching the imagined danger of China as a military power to be a threat to us, they have done nothing to avoid a petroleum shortage. If we were attacked by another nation, how would any fuel be transported to Australia from Singapore in time of war?

These same politicians could have nationalised the oil industry with finance coming from the dumping of the idea of buying into obselete technology of submarine warfare.

I believe the closure of our previous oil refineries around Australia was apart from boosting industry and Government coffers was also to pacify the nutters in the “climate change” debacle.

  5. Thanks Joe, both USA & Australia measure at 7.7 million km². China & Canada similar.
Perhaps the diesel shortage/crisis is a hint to re-structure society toward the Original Blueprints for Mankind.
    Consider these estimations:
    * There’s roughly 7 million families in Australia.
    * Australia is around 7 million km² or 700 million hectares.
    * Each family could be awarded One Hectare (100x100m) to live & grow better-than-organic food, as it’s home-grown.
    * That is ONLY 1% of the Land! Definitely NOT the Big City over-crowded model.
    * (or around 10% Land in the USA, where there’s far more ‘small’ communities).

Simple arithmetic, may take several generations to achieve. DIESEL NOT REQUIRED! Could you imagine this transition, with as little pain as possible? That’s a New Paradigm, & it’s just beginning.

Observation: Travel via Air or Road between Sydney & Melbourne, 90+% of the time you see EMPTY LANDS (inefficient cattle use maybe). Why not in the hands of People & animal companions as opposed to ‘industrial farmland’? A DRASTIC Change of Mindset is required, that encompass STEWARDS, not OWNERS.

REFERENCES from various inspired sources, if one is willing to listen:

“If you desire to sustain…..Find a piece of land & love it – it will love you back.”

“Purchase property, & I am not speaking of condos. Get out of the cities. They will be the most dangerous places to live…..You can never lose on land that is purchased. You never will.”

“You believe that grouping together in large cities solves problems, when it only creates them……your mistake is in calling these things valuable, when, in fact, they are detrimental.”

“You’ve torn apart your families, disassembled your smaller communities in favour of huge cities….fewer ‘tribes’, groups, or clans whose members see their responsibility…for the whole.”

“What is manifested in Joy has abundance. What is manifested in Fear, stored food or riches, become inaccessible when the time comes. Gardens of Co-Creation are a joyful pursuit of abundance!”

“Understanding one’s divine nature as manifestor, no matter where one is, one is safe. If one desires to be away from an area of much change, then it will be so.”

“Cultivate gardens in delight to provide abundance of fruitful provisions, rather than the fear & frustration of hoarding. Foodstuffs that resonate in fear will be afraid to provide when the time comes.”

The One Hectare ‘Kin’s Domain’ model is derived from the Ringing Cedars of Russia book series, where clusters of Domains make up a community. Do some research.

  6. re: “The controlled U.S. puppet regime along with bad Russia and China’s, are moseying along bringing on the depop and manipulating the financial reset, with kill shots of poison and lead, manipulation, inflation, starvation, intangible emptiness…”
    .
I still refuse to get my head around the fact that the world’s Great Depressions are not resets for the Average Joes and a boom time for the Moes. In Oz, we know such miracle misfortunes as asset stripping and as Bottom of the Harbour Schemes. The Oligarchs and our Judases are the people that shall not be blamed. As long as we all get a good suck on an emptied sauce bottle.

  7. Diesel became truck fuel when petrol prices increased and now we see a reverse in price so all heavy haulage should revert to petrol .

  8. The author calls it mismanagement and rushes out to buy an electric truck. Heavy sigh.

  9. Earlier this week The White House announced that it has secured the biggest oil deal in world history.

The energy required to power America’s re-industrialisation is now secure.
    .
I doubt that refineries will be allowed to pose too much of an problem. thats what Standard Oil was all about. I’m sure they’ve looked into this well ahead f schedule.
    .

  10. The problem isn’t the refineries, or the lack thereof, it is a supply of heavy crude oil problem. America has plenty of light sweet crude oil from fracking and that’s fine for refining into petrol and plastics, but they need the imported heavy crude from the Persian Gulf and Saudi Arabia to refine diesel and aviation fuel (kerosene).

It will take them at least 4 years to start extracting heavy crude from Venezuela at a cost of many hundreds of billions of dollars, hence the oil companies aren’t interested in that option.

Trump needs to end his blockade of the Hormuz Strait and let the oil start flowing again, it’s not only the American economy which is headed for a crash, it’s the rest of the world also.

  11. Me hopes your readers all of them believe in heavy duty prepping without missing a beat & have been in this preparatory mode for many years If not then given the current circumstances those who have not ardently prepped will find themselves facing a very sticky wicket. we are on a steep downhill slide which will collapse everything we know of. Many quotes from yt sites hace emphasised for years that we are all gonna get hammered, ie we are screwed.

  12. If I’ve read the article correctly, Mike Adams is missing the fact that the U.S. only pumps light crude oil from their wells.
    .

Diesel is refined from heavy crude oil that they import from overseas, like through the Strait of Hormuz they the puppets are blocking.
    .

The controlled U.S. puppet regime along with bad Russia and China’s, are moseying along bringing on the depop and manipulating the financial reset, with kill shots of poison and lead, manipulation, inflation, starvation, intangible emptiness…
    .

Ursula Von der Anaconda has been hissing and spitting over the savings accounts of European Plebians, similar to supposedly stolen Russian frozen assets, supposedly, that are being invested for the Russians by the Europeans, a way around sanction narratives.
    .

She the E.U.’s public face of evil, wants to swim in the pool of money, soon to be easily controlled by nearly ready digital currency and unreal, regulated shit coins, to make better use of them savings for and by corporations, because the Plebians are useless at managing lifelong savings and don’t know how to give it away to the Green piano dick tapping Goblin.
    .

    Don’t blink Australia.

  13. Most US imported oil and products like diesel comes from Alberta but they have built a pipeline to the Pacific now.
Trump is filling the gap from Venezuela ( who would have thought it is named after Venice ), he will need more refineries quick, so a high diesel price will assist.
A lot of Canada is not really viable due to the weather and Canadians should give up on it. Stop being patriotic to nothing, you don’t know your flag is a stylised fleur-de-lys from the Merovinginans, you have no culture except ice-hockey and your French accent is awful. You should all move to Portland, Oregon because nobody else wants it.
