ON did abstain from the final vote, we voted in support of a motion which would remove the guillotine so that the debate could be extended, and in support of an amendment that would clarify it only applied to physical violence.
After that it was clear there was nothing further that could be done with Greens, Liberal and Labor teaming up to pass it as you saw.
Senator Roberts does feel compelled to address that Senator Rennick released a video which received hundreds of thousands of views where he said “the two major parties with support form One Nation have actually voted for the Hate Crimes Bill”
This is blatantly untrue and despite shifting the goal posts later, the video with that quote is still up and circulating to many more people.
It’s unfortunate that many of the people who are arguing for the minor parties to work together have seized on a simple abstention to try and pretend that there is some massive betrayal or change of principle on what was a piece of legislation passed through on a guillotine by the three other parties in the Senate.
One Nation’s position on free speech hasn’t changed. In July we proposed an inquiry into incorporating free speech into the constitution and Senator Hanson’s legal appeal against the 18C finding is still ongoing.

I think that any excuse is just that, an excuse, and regardless how they choose to word it, by not voting, it still sent a negative message, and in the end, it’s the lasting impression that counts, after the “excuse” is long forgotten.

I don’t know what to make of that reasoning but I saw Pauline being interviewed recently (unfortunately can’t remember the names of the interviewers ), but listening to her talk about her treatment in politics from when she first started I am sure she has always cared for her constituents and for Australia. She has stuck it out through the years and is now 70 years old with not long to go in politics. She has been concentrating currently on recruiting new candidates in different states wanting to vet them properly to make sure they support the aims of her party before she leaves office. She currently is still fighting in court over the supposed racist comment she made some time ago, among others I think she said. Who knows whether those reasons for abstaining are plausible or whether their vote would have made a difference to this stupid bill I am certain Pauline Hanson is a fighter, mistakes and blemishes and all.
I sensed Pauline was a gatekeeper from the time she turned up to stop the trucks and managed to persuade the truckies to pull over so traffic could flow. That was an important demonstration in a moment of time that was lost because the main truckie trusted her and that was the end of that.
I also sensed Pauline was a gatekeeper when she started doing fancy dress in Parliament with black face covering garments on one occasion, and proudly wearing a blue flag scarf on the other.
Why the need to prostrate to certain lobby groups?

To see Roberts standing beside her, silent, as she made her feeble excuse that she ‘would’ vote, potentially….was lame. A lost moment to speak.
