Australia has no oil or fuel stored in the United States of America or anywhere else for that matter – what we have on hand across the nation is all we have. Our reserves were sold by then Liberal Energy Minister Angus Taylor in March 2022.
Australia’s emergency oil stockpile, purchased in 2020 to meet International Energy Agency (IEA) obligations, was stored in the United States Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) along the Gulf of Mexico. The crude oil was held in underground salt caverns across four sites in Texas and Louisiana
The reserve of 1.7 million barrels has gone, released onto the international market in 2022 and none has been purchased to replace it.
Ampol has expanded its global search for alternative crude oil sources by turning to the United States as it seeks to shore up supplies amid Australia’s mounting fuel crisis, while also revealing that it will delay a maintenance shutdown of its Brisbane refinery.
Sale documents obtained by Cairns News reveal our US oil reserves were placed onto the international market and absorbed by usual buyers.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen said Australia no longer keeps oil reserves anywhere overseas, they are now stored in Australia and will be insufficient for normal use which is why Ampol is sourcing alternate supplies.
“But the fundamentals are good in that Australia has a good supply, and importantly, speaking to the industry, I have confirmed that every single expected delivery of petrol, diesel and jet fuel has arrived on time, on schedule, as expected,” Mr Bowen said.
“So at this point, while there are challenges ahead, no doubt about it, Australians can be confident that the rules put in place in 2022 to ensure that Australia has a stock of petrol and diesel on hand here in Australia, not in Texas or Louisiana or anywhere else, on hand here in Australia, puts us in a good position.
“We enter this international crisis well prepared, as well prepared, better prepared than we have entered similar crises, certainly in the lead-up to the 2022 energy crisis caused by the invasion of Ukraine, much better prepared now than we were as a country then.”
Last week six fuel shipments planned for Australia and due after mid-April were cancelled or deferred.
The energy minister says about 74 others are still expected, and that while there may be “bumps” due to the war in Iran, supply is secure.
The federal government is confident that fuel supplies will arrive largely as scheduled until mid-April, and there remains at least as much supply in Australia as there was in-country before the outbreak of war in Iran.
“We still have two refineries working full pelt … and we also have the boats continuing to arrive, and the refiners and importers working very closely with government to replace those six being cancelled or deferred,” Mr Bowen said.
Sale contracts in 2022 for Australia’s US reserves state:
‘Agree to the sale of oil held in the United States (US) Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) under Section 40A of the Liquid Fuels Emergency Act 1984 (LFE Act) to respond to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) call for collective action.
Key Points: 1. The IEA issued a notice of activation of a collective action on 1 March 2022 (Paris time), calling participating countries to meet their allocation obligations under the IEA Agreement and supply 60 million barrels (mb) of oil to the market. The IEA action is being taken to stabilise the oil market as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
2. At the meeting, Minister Taylor confirmed Australia’s willingness to participate in the collective action. Minister Taylor has been briefed on Australia’s plan to contribute by offering for sale all of the Government owned crude oil held in the US SPR (MS22-000325 refers).
3. The IEA has calculated Australia’s contribution to the response plan as 1.543mb. The IEA has also asked countries to consider pledging 25 per cent more than their calculated share.’
The sale documents were signed March 17, 2022 by Energy Minister Angus Taylor in the final days of Morrison Liberal government which went to an election on May 21, 2022.
Industries nation wide had better brace themselves for fuel rationing and a possible fuel drought by mid-April if consumption continues at the present rate.

Diesel supplies in Tasmania were under stress in the weeks leading up to the war.

True story, geologic hydrocarbons are ABUNDANT within the Earth. The Soviets (when they were still Soviets) pioneered ultra-deep drilling, and struck oil no matter WHERE they drilled. Suffice to say that it’s there, no need for anyone to be plucking BS stories out of their opportunisitc grant-funded arses about what it actually is or how it got there, because it IS there in effectively unlimited amounts just waiting to be harnessed.
Doesn’t do Australia much good knowing, though, seeing as how history emphatically shows Australia can’t do ANYTHING right, and then not without the permission of our obligate colonial masters. With most of all the Australian refineries now being import terminals their storage tanks should be filled to the brim with oil sourced from within Australia to then be transported to refineries still in operation .
Having to rely on a foreign country to provide refined oil is beyond the scope of inconvenience when fuel delivered doesn’t make it past the great dividing range as it fills every fuel terminal along the coastline in every heavy populated areas .
The Fed government says that we do not produce enough oil to cover demand but if those tanks were full the amount of crude oil we do produce would be enough to top those tanks up to remain full at all times and we would not be reliant on foreign imports ever again
The incompetence of the Australian government is breathtaking. When will ‘they’ recognize that the so-called shortages or oil in the world are solely lies to jack up the price of oil so the oil industry can make even more money. When it is accepted that oil is an adiabatic liquid that is the second most abundant to water, but found deep underground, then deep drilling will extract as much as is required to get us through until zero-point energy is available. Of course Australia should be independent, so more of the 6 closed refineries will need to be restarted urgently.

Much Awaited BRICS Statement on Iran War Should be a Step for Justice-Based Peace.

Of course the 10 member states of BRICS have made their own statements on various aspects of this issue, but the significance of a formal joint statement will be much higher and this is why this is so eagerly awaited.
In this humble submission, this writer suggests that the BRICS statement should emphasize the following six aspects.
To start with, considerable emphasis and space should be devoted to establishing that peace and stability in the West Asian and Middle-East regions is of exceptionally high importance not only for the countries of this region but for the entire world. Having established this very solidly, the statement should then express great regret that unfortunately this region and its neighborhood have become the scene of forever wars and conflicts. Then the statement should say that it is of the highest importance to make a break from this trend and for the countries of the region as well as the international community, with the help of the UN, to ensure that this region takes the urgently needed path towards permanent peace based on observation of international law and rules. For this all differences need to be resolved on the basis of the precepts of peace and justice by negotiations, helped by the UNO or other mediators whenever needed, also drawing on the work already done for internationally widely supported solutions like the two state solution to resolve the Palestinian crisis. BRICS should say that it will be highly supportive of all peace with justice efforts in the region.
The second part of the BRICS statement should say that given the urgency of peace in this region for the entire world, it is to be regretted that the USA and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, despite the fact that encouraging negotiations were being held at this time to resolve pending issues, resulting in the highly regrettable death of its leaders and their family members, and it is also to be regretted that Iran’s response caused harm in some countries that were not directly involved in the attack.
Thirdly, this statement should say that the situation just now is highly dangerous with great harm being caused to people, infrastructure and environment of the region, while at the same time there are high risks of escalation and a wider war.
Fourthly, the statement should say that as a result of this war including the blocking or obstruction of sea routes, the entire world economy has been adversely affected, there is acute energy crisis in many countries, food prospects are adversely affected and the humanitarian crisis is worsening at an alarming pace.
Keeping in view all these adversities and high risks, this statement should call for ending this war as early as possible, for opening up of critical sea routes and ending most of the sanctions against Iran. BRICS should say that it will be happy and willing to contribute to any efforts for justice based peace.
Finally, this statement should say that special efforts for helping people affected by the humanitarian crisis in all parts of the region and its neighboring areas should be made, with special concern for Gaza, and care should be taken to ensure that the humanitarian crisis does not increase or expand any more. The remaining, subsidized refineries—Ampol Lytton in Brisbane and Viva Energy Geelong in Victoria—supply less than 20% of the country’s fuel demand, down from eight refineries operating around 2000.
Closed or Repurposed Refineries:
BP Kwinana (WA) (2020/2021): Converted to an import terminal.
ExxonMobil Altona (VIC) (2021): Announced closure, converted to an import terminal.
Shell Clyde (NSW) (2012–2013): Converted to an import terminal.
BP Bulwer Island (QLD) (2015): Converted to an import terminal.
Caltex Kurnell (NSW) (2014): Converted to an import terminal.
The remaining two refineries are supported by government subsidies (Fuel Security Services Payment) intended to keep them running until at least 2027–2030 to prevent total reliance on imports.
When will it become obvious that none of this destruction is by accident…it has all been meticulously planned out!

Oh my goodness gracious me, what a pickle these bureaucrats have put us in. Even today, as in the past month I speak with people daily who say ” nothing to worry about it will all blow over we have enough oil enough petrol & the only problem is greedy people hoarding it”! Hells Bells. We are on the Titanic all of us in it together but the problem is so many people refuse to believe that we are facing famine & endless war & no recovery. My letter today, to the local Geelong newspaper, and forwarded also to Richard Marles, the federal member for Geelong, when his office once again had no staff on deck.

Given that 90% of our liquid fuel comes from Singaporean mega-refineries, and that this country runs on petrol and diesel, it seems ludicrous that the government oversaw the decommissioning of the majority of our refineries., which used to number around eleven.
For our government to drop the ball on fuel, and especially in light of the fact that the alarm bells rang over thirteen years ago with the NRMA-commissioned reports into Australia’s liquid fuel security, it seems that the government has been totally out of order and leaving the country vulnerable to a total shutdown.
Currently 81 ships are contracted to ferry refined fuel to Australia, with several cancelled.
Should our refineries all have remained in production this would be unnecessary ,and fuel likely cheaper, as those transport costs would be eliminated.
The government is thus liable to a charge of breach of contract, as thy are service providers only, as confirmed to me by a staffer of the Victorian Energy Minister, when I phoned that office
prior to the last state elections, the current Minister being the same lady, Lily D’Ambrosio.
Such a charge is applicable, and could well result in the resignation of some of those concerned, and especially our refinery town Deputy PM Richard Marles, to whom I sent the to reports, included with this letter, way back in 2914 when I found out about them.
For the government to wilfully ignore the fact that this country runs on petroleum is a major fail, and of massive proportions, my own opinion being that if a government, which endlessly talks about “the economy”, cannot see fit to make sure its wheels keep turning, is not fit to govern.
I think Richard Marles has a lot to answer for, as he seems, at least to me, to have not earned the $400k plus salary he is paid, as he is alleged, like PM Albo, to not read his briefs, so may not have read those reports I sent him.
