MEDIA and rescue personnel are calling it “heroic” and “supernatural” but the 13-year-old West Australian boy Austin Applebee who swam for four hours through rough waters in fading light to save his mother and two siblings now believes it was faith in God.
Austin and his family had been paddle boarding and kayaking at Geographe Bay near Quindalup on the exposed Margaret River region on the southern coast of WA on Friday when strong winds pushed their inflatables out to sea, police said.
The teenager attempted to paddle back to shore to raise the alarm but the choppy conditions kept filling his kayak with water, forcing him to abandon it and swim the remaining 4km (2 nautical miles) to shore as light faded.
Austin and his younger brother Beau, 12, were in kayaks and his mother Joanne and sister Grace, 8, were on a paddleboard. Austin and Beau had tried to pull the paddleboard towards shore with their kayaks but were repeatedly swamped by the waves.
Commander Paul Bresland of the Naturaliste Volunteer Marine Rescue Group said the efforts of the teenager were “superhuman”. “The bravery, strength and courage shown by this family were extraordinary, especially the young fella who swam 4km to raise the alarm,” he said.
Austin told the ABC he swam in the first two hours with a life jacket on, then ditched it, and he swam the next two hours without it. After four hours battling the chop he made it to shore sometime before 6pm WA time and collapsed from fatigue, passing out for a period. After recovering he then ran about 2 kilometres back to their accommodation, where he got his mother’s phone to call emergency services.
The boy was able to raise the alarm by 6pm local time, prompting a major search from Quindalup beach, near Dunsborough.
Joanne, Beau and Grace were located by a rescue helicopter at about 8.30pm as they clung to the paddleboard about 14km offshore. The family had been driven a further 10km offshore by the strong southerly winds from where Austin set out for shore.
Joanne said she and her son and daughter were cold and shaking, and Beau couldn’t feel his legs. She said she had to make the difficult decision earlier to ask Austin to leave them and swim to shore.
Austin told 7 News he thought of his schoolmates at his Christian youth group and wondered if he would not make it. “I was also thinking about all my friends at school and my Christian youth (group) and I just said not today, not today, not today – I had to keep on going.”
“I was trying to get the happiest things in my head, and trying to make it through, [and not think of] the bad things that will distract me,” he told media in Perth on Tuesday.
What most media never reported was Austin’s prayers: “I kept praying and praying, I said to God ‘I’ll get baptised, I’ll get baptised’,” the Australian reported.
A faith-based website called “The Other Cheek” reported Austin’s quote in more detail: “… Just keep on swimming. Just keep on swimming. I don’t think it was actually me did. It was God. The whole time I kept on praying, I kept on praying and I said to God, I’ll get baptised, I’ll get baptised and all that. And I went to church on Sunday.”

ABC, “Inside the Darwin quarantine camp, where life is ‘like a holiday’ for people escaping lockdown….Unlike hotel quarantine for international arrivals — where travellers forfeit fresh air and the freedom to exercise — residents at the Howard Springs facility are able to walk around the facility, enjoy Top End sunsets and even go for a swim.”
Residents? no surely guests; sounds like it was safer swimming with crocs in the Top End than residents walking the streets of Dan’s Town.
Guest feedback, ‘”Each day we did virtual Pilates classes on the balcony or we played cards at night.”

“We always wore our mask when we were outside”’ 🤔
That’s a fib.
Only $2,500.00 per single per fortnight or $5,000.00 per family
Cheap at half the price.
Lest we forget 2020: where total number of deaths in Australia above the benchmark 2015-2019 previous five years average was
48.2 deaths
not including others that make up ~2% of the Australian population that don’t identify as male or female.

Commenter from Vic,
That’s the funniest comment I’ve seen for some time
“Well folks, What I’d like to know is how come the remorseless shit-for-brains hired mercenary thugs haven’t arrested all of them for hate speech?”
But the e-Karen is probably working with Elbow on more re-education camps even as we sit back, relax and let the ABC-TV morph us into gender transitioned communists
Existing COVID era detention camps:
Northern Territory (Howard Springs)
Victoria (Mickleham, Melbourne)
Queensland (Pinkenba, Brisbane)
Western Australia (Bullsbrook, Perth)
Put all that aside I have various pieces of personal evidence that a Christian type of “God” exists in some form but I would say the Bible and organised religion is in large part a human effort so use discretion
Control freaks of the ages lay claim any superhuman feats miracles products of their ideology, to reinforce the walls around their mind control matrix where they manipulate perceptions and beliefs to maintain their position on the chessboard.
It’s not often one’s fate is sealed at such a young age for showing extraordinary strength and courage.
May Austin remain a free spirit.
Hey folks,
Kudos to young Austin for his heroism and his epiphany en route to the beach, getting baptised is probably the logical next step.
And just BTW, folks, that’s as good as it gets, that’s the best he’ll ever be able to do in this world, because it goes without saying that he’ll NEVER EVER be one of the Chosen people…

Too soon?
Lord Jesus Christ thank you for giving strength to young Austin.
Young man , get baptized and bless The Lord of life.
Well done Austin. This event has changed your life forever. Don’t turn back. Just keep moving forward to finish the race and bring along with you as many as are willing to run the marathon of life with you.
Yes this boy has shown heroic and supernatural ability that comes from love for his family with his faith in God giving him the supernatural abilities.
He has grown into a mighty young man with the loving power of God, like Jesus Christ showed the world the true way of reality, with God’s spirit of love and truth.
This boy has conquered rear itself.
Well folks,
What I’d like to know is how come the remorseless shit-for-brains hired mercenary thugs haven’t arrested all of them for hate speech?
