A special report on widespread flooding by FNQ correspondents
Tuesday, December 19. Massive rainfall, in some areas up to two metres, wind and floods in the wake of Cat 2 Cyclone Jasper has wreaked immense damage to Far Northern infrastructure that will take several years to repair and cost several billion dollars at first estimate.
The cyclone weakened into a low pressure system on Monday then uncharacteristically the low hovered over Cairns and the hinterland for four days dumping massive rainfall then moving further north along Cape York Peninsula.
Yesterday two Chinook military helicopters attempted to evacuate the Aboriginal community of Wujal Wujal between Cairns and Cooktown situated on the banks of the crocodile infested, flooded Bloomfield River but poor visibility and strong winds thwarted the attempt.
After another sortie today most of the inhabitants were airlifted to Cooktown where they stayed in a cyclone shelter or moved in with relatives.
Roof-top sanctuaries for its population of 290 inhabitants have protected them from raging water and voracious crocodiles.
Food and water supplies now are non-existent and there is no road access to the community.
Nearby 18 people who had been visiting the famous Lions Den Hotel near Cooktown spent a cold night on the pub roof as floodwaters rose around them. Link below to ABC site with boat and chopper footage:
Douglas Shire centered on Port Douglas and Mossman one hour north of Cairns has been devastated. Food and water supplies are being delivered to the Port by boat from Cairns.
The Captain Cook Highway linking the Port and Mossman to Cairns has been smashed by torrential rain in excess of one-and-one-half metres or 1500 mm.
It could be many weeks before the highway can be reopened leaving the only access to Port Douglas and Mossman by sea and the Rex Range to the west.
The economic loss through a lack of tourists on which the area largely survives will be enormous.
Cairns beach suburbs have been inundated by floodwaters and tonnes of mud which have wrecked hundreds of plush homes in the seaside suburbs of Holloways Beach, Yorkeys Knob, Machans Beach and suburb of Caravonica.
The Rex Range western access to Mossman and the Port reopened yesterday after a large landslip was removed by council.
The notorious Kuranda Range Road remains closed from numerous landslips and large trees preventing hundreds of Tablelands residents form getting to work in Cairns. It could be reopened by Wednesday.
The range road suffered enormously from 70 knot wind gusts and driving rain after the former Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey several years ago ordered road maintenance crews not to remove trees or woody vegetation growing along the edge of the 10 klm roadside.
Minister Bailey and then Environment Minister Steven Miles, now Premier, wanted the tree canopy to completely cover the narrow winding road leaving the regrowth forest trees a prime target for a cyclone.
Similar issues have caused road closures across the north where roads have been blocked by falling trees which were once cleared several metres back from roadsides.
The Palmerston Highway, a major truck transport route linking the Bruce Highway to the Atherton Tablelands has suffered extraordinary damage from trees and water erosion.
This is a main arterial route for B-Doubles taking bananas and other fruit to southern markets.
Cairns airport was inundated leaving debris scattered across the tarmac and landing strips. It opened one runway today after being closed for four days.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Laura Boekel said flooding was easing, with the focus now turning to around the Cape York area for showers and storms.
“We have one major flood warning current, and that’s for the Murray River,” she said.
“The Daintree River has now been downgraded to a moderate flood warning.
“However these showers and thunderstorms might bring significant rainfall and it could lead to localised flash flooding during today and into Wednesday.”
Since last Thursday, many areas from Tully to Cape Melville have already received between 400 and 1000 millimetres of rainfall, with localised falls of 1200-1600mm between Cairns and Cooktown.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he would travel to the region late Thursday and Friday.
From 2pm tomorrow, applications for the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment and Disaster Recovery Allowance will open for people who live and work in the council areas affected.
This includes Cairns, Cassowary Coast, Mareeba, Tablelands and Wujal Wujal.
“[The Disaster Recovery Payment] is a one-off payment of $1,000 per eligible adult and $400 per eligible child who suffered a significant loss as a result of the floods, including a severely damaged or destroyed home or a serious injury,” Mr Albanese said.
The Disaster Recovery Allowance provides up to 13 weeks of federal income support to assist eligible employees or sole traders who experience a loss of income as a direct result of a major disaster.
People will soon be able to check their eligibility and how to claim on the Services Australia website.
*Retired Tablelands farmer Peter Gargan, 78, said he remembered in the late 60’s a massive rainfall event which dumped up to 60 inches(1500mm) of rain across the Far North.
“This big weather event is not unusual for the north, my parents told me years ago there was another similar big rainfall about 1932,” he said.

It was an early cyclone and first decent rains after a fairly long dry spell. Ground was hard so the water ran off, creeks filled and rivers flooded. HAARP does not have the power to lift your hat off, chemtrails and cloud seeding would’ve required an awful lot of aircraft, which we didn’t see….it’s a natural event….nasty but natural.
I’m glad to hear that the Wujal people will be able to go back to a rebuilt community and I think you’re right that the govt will bend over backwards to accommodate them.

I should have said in my original comment that it did seem to be quite a natural cyclone which was actually struggling and barely cat 1 for days – until it reached the stage of landfall. That is when I believe the manipulations started.
There should normally be a monsoon trough forming up at PNG/Indo by now but it still hasn’t formed nor moved to Oz – so the rain we had wasn’t associated with the monsoon.

I agree, there is a lot of overreacting, especially amongst us ‘truthers’ of late, who are supposed to be awake realists and therefore uninfluenced by fear propaganda or exaggerated claims, often from unreliable, or even unknown sources, which are supposed to explain things. But much like the MSM propagandists – the government’s most trusted LIARS – who always hyperventilate about quite normal and natural events or phenomena, many of us are similarly spreading much exaggerated rhetoric with no real evidence to substantiate most of it, other than hearsay from unreliable, sometimes unknown ‘experts’ or assumed witnesses; who also have no evidence to explain what they assume caused or, what the reason was for whatever they claim to have witnessed.
Just their biased opinions founded mainly on the hearsay of others, and it’s having quite a negative effect on our reputation, thus helpfulness.

The US navy is very good at predicting cyclones and their track map had this thing moving at a ‘normal’ progression over the cape and into the gulf by friday. However, once it was able to make landfall, it was apparently ‘held’ there and made to crawl hideously slowly over the cape. Then the heavy rain blob just ‘sat’ over cairns and cape trib for at least two days while all the other rain clouds moved around it.
Yes, cyclones can be ‘unpredictable’ but this could not have been anything else other than blatantly manipulated. So what was the reason? – to kill tourism in the FN (in line with the global agenda to reduce pop movements)? – to further the agenda that ‘you will own nothing’? – to cripple the state because palacechook was forced to resign?
Who makes these decisions that such-and-such area will be targeted? Are these decisions made domestically or outside and who in govt knows what is going on?
Perhaps some of the answers will be apparent when you see what they will do in recovery. Will Wujal Wujal be rebuilt or will those people be permanently resettled in Cooktown or elsewhere and something else done with that location? What will happen in the suburbs bordering the barron? How fast will infrastructure repairs be made to the main access roads or will there be delay after delay to hinder local movements and reduce the availability of food, replacement goods and economic support (tourism)?
Many questions to be answered by this malevolent event but how do you get answers when the people who need to answer them are deaf, dumb and blind???

They use the HAARP system to cause a cyclone to hover over one city. They then blame climate change.
Cyclone flooding gives good reason to commence tunneling operations through the range in different locations to the tablelands for not only for vehicle traffic but to also act as a cyclone shelters and what is dug out can be used to build levee banks but what is really needed are flood barriers in the short term at the mouth of every waterway into the sea to stop the incoming tide from not allowing the flooded creeks and rivers to escape into the sea .
At the mouth of the Barron River it is knee deep at low tide with a narrow channel about 15 feet wide so building a flood barrier with a boat dock is not such a big deal and it would go a long way towards draining the Barron River floodplain that backs floodwaters up the Redlynch Valley at the high tide during cyclonic events such as this

Most likely, this cyclone and the ones from when I was a child, were all caused by the HAARP weather control program of the Deep State entities. I am 75 and this was the same as those annual ones from the 1950s to the 1970/80s. They were annually cyclic frequently running down from north to south and ending up inland.
The Deep State/New World Order want Australia empty so that they can inhabit it after a nuclear war in the Northern Hemisphere. There is an underground city under Pine Gap and an high speed underground rail from there to Canberra Parliament House. These people are well prepared to scalp our planet earth.
