I went to school in the 70s and into the very early 80s. Cadet Corps was compulsory for one year then you could increase that to two years and after two years further increase all the way to 6th form. Additionally our school required us to go to extremely challenging camps that would last up to 12 days during which for 24 hours we were individually “dumped” in the wilderness to fend on our own. One of “ours” made it to a very high rank in the Australian Army regulars in their after school life. We all knew he would – he was that sort of guy.
The experiences were great. Our cadet corps had 308 Lee-Enfields from WW1 (!) for our parades and on the camps we teamed up with the Australian Army regulars to shoot M16s at their firing range (the first time I did it the recoil astounded me – it was the first firearm I had ever used and I immediately understood why firearms did so much damage).
I was a radio operator and we had to learn all the communication protocols including relay to army standards as we had to communicate regularly with the Army regulars on our yearly treks. The radio packs were ex Vietnam – valve powered and weighed a bloody tonne once you’d been trekking up mountains for a few days. And on the “camps” I was in the very first party to run a communications cable up a mountain.
All this – amongst other things – made me the person I was today. I figured if I was able to get out of that then most future challenges were a breeze.

ADF school based cadet programs are a youth group, designed to improve public image of ADF and to encourage youth to consider an ADF career. However, due to ADF medical criteria, 99% of them automatically excluded from service.

What a stupid idea.. Why not bring back school technical colleges where high school students learn a trade before they leave school. I remember one such school near where I lived when I was growing up.. A whole building was dedicated to all trades near the school where the kids went on certain days and learned different skills.
Australia has no enemies except those created for us by the US/UK. Our government bends the knee to these and sends our men and women to die for their causes, not ours and supports their wars everywhere including Israel and Ukraine.
