An application to council from Freshwater Planning to build a 300 student Islamic school at Mareeba in Far North Queensland has sent the local council, media and politicians underground.
Such is the perceived influence of the Australian Muslim lobby authorities are fearful of publicly discussing Islamic issues.
The application seeks consent to build a non-residential educational facility at a 28 ha site in six stages to be completed by 2041, located on the southern side of the town.
The Two Rivers Community School school would offer “educational and learning opportunities for students based on the rich farming cultural heritage of the Tableland’s region,” according to the rezoning application.
Unknown to ratepayers at the time a representative of the Muslim school proponents addressed Mareeba Shire Council late last year to outline their plans.
Member for Kennedy Bob Katter said he was unaware of the proposal and would meet with councillors next time he was in Mareeba to discuss the proposal.
The 28 ha block of former farmland is zoned Rural and has to undergo a ‘Material Change of Use’ examination to be decided by council, resulting in a rezoning of the land before any construction can take place.
Public objections to the rezoning can be made until the closing date of May 31.

Ten years ago a similar proposal from an Islamic group created a flurry of opposition by ratepayers who organized a public meeting to discuss the large school and its potential impact on the community.
A meeting of 150 Mareeba residents was addressed by Standard Bearers Academy education spokesman, Imam Dylan Chown who explained the aim of the 1200 all-male student school was to to offer students of all religions enrolment in an attempt to allay the perception of a fundamental Islamic school.
A subsequent, somewhat hostile public meeting in 2014 rejected the $70 million facility and ultimately the proponents pulled out of the project.
An organiser of the 2014 ratepayers group was Vietnam veteran and retired farmer Alan Webb who questioned the need for such a school then and today when Mareeba was already serviced by first class public and private schools open to all religious denominations.
He said the ongoing riots, social upheaval and racial division occurring in Sydney and Melbourne between Palestinians and Israelis clashing over the Hamas-Israeli war, should be enough to alert the regions that any potential similar hostilities by ethnic groups were not welcome.
To gauge present community support for such a far-reaching, ideological educational facility Mr Webb said he would urge the council to undertake a survey of ratepayers before any approvals were given.
Cairns and Mareeba have experienced racial tension in the past when young Aborigines, whites and Maoris regularly clashed and to add young, possibly radicalised Muslims into the mix should not occur, especially when it could be prevented by authorities.
At the weekend a former LNP state member of parliament was attacked by Maoris near his Cairns home knocking him unconscious, leaving him with serious injuries after he was set upon by a shovel-wielding assailant.
Mareeba residents would be invited to a public meeting in the near future to discuss the Freshwater Planning consultancy application, said Mr Webb.

Dr – Good points.. I too have travelled widely, Europe, Middle East, Asia, US – and lived for a time in several other countries – this was in the 70’s and 80’s when the world was different. Things have really changed in many of these places now and I have no desire to go back to Europe or the US at all.
Most migration has been caused by wars when people are displaced and can no longer live well or to the standards they had before in their own countries that are now rubble – the Middle East being a good example of this.
So don’t blame the migrants… blame the greedy warmongers.

The Muslims I have talked to are quite ignorant about their deen just as a lot of Christians are ignorant about their scripture. The claim that Islam is the fastest growing religion is doubtful. The majority of Islam’s growth is attributed to high birth rates. This is being negated by the number of people leaving Islam in large numbers in countries like Indonesia, Iran and Pakistan.
