Murdoch closed down most of his regional weeklies and some dailies earlier this year
Former prime minister Kevin Rudd has admitted his petition calling for a royal commission into Rupert Murdoch’s media empire will likely be ignored by the Liberal government, despite amassing more than 40,000 signatures in just over 24 hours.
In a tweet on Saturday Mr Rudd said he was urging parliament to set up a royal commission into the abuse of media monopoly in Australia, particularly by the Murdoch media, and to make recommendations to maximise media ownership diversity.
“The truth is Murdoch has become a cancer, an arrogant cancer, on our democracy,” Mr Rudd said in a video launching the petition.

It has since racked up over 40,000 signatures, and he says he’s not surprised by the outpouring of support.
“What I picked up across the Australian community is growing levels of anger about the impact of the Murdoch media monopoly on people’s lives,” he told AAP on Sunday.
“This anger is finally bubbling over into a much more broadly based social movement. People are just fed up.”
According to Mr Rudd, 70 per cent of Australia’s print readership – and virtually every newspaper in Queensland – is owned by Mr Murdoch.
He keeps his loss-making newspapers in Australia to maximise his political power, pursue his commercial interests, and bully anybody who has a different point of view, Mr Rudd said.
“In 18 of the last 18 federal and state elections, we’ve seen the Murdoch media campaign viciously against the Labor Party and viciously in support of the Liberal and National parties.”
“There’s no such thing as a level playing field any more.”
Mr Rudd said the issue had been swept under the rug for too long, because the Murdoch media and coalition government scratched each other’s backs.
He hopes the groundswell of support will mean the government will be forced to consider calling a royal commission.
“That is a political decision for Mr Morrison,” he told AAP.
“The Murdoch media act as a political protection racket for the Liberal and National parties, so they don’t want to change things.
“But the bottom line is, any political party will always be mindful of where there is a groundswell of community sentiment.”
Mr Rudd also brushed off concerns that calling for government intervention into the agenda of a media company could set a dangerous precedent.
“What a Royal Commissioner would determine based on open terms of reference will be a matter for whoever that Royal Commissioner is. I don’t prescribe a particular outcome here,” he told AAP.
“But what I am saying loud and clear is that we no longer have sufficient diversity.”
Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese on Sunday would not say whether he supports Mr Rudd’s call for a royal commission.
“Kevin is doing that as a private citizen, as a former prime minister. He’s entitled to put his views,” Mr Albanese told reporters in Adelaide.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been contacted for comment.
Editor: Whilst we might agree with some of Mr Rudd’s assertions we support News Ltd’s coverage of so-called climate change as legitimate and an attempt to balance the stupefied climate warriors of the Labor Party, Greens and particularly the ABC.
In fact it was the Murdoch press in Tasmania who had Martin Bryant named, framed and found guilty before the poor kid was even rounded up. Martin Bryant is really a political prisoner, jailed without a fair trial, assessed as being mentally unfit,, but sentenced to a prison instead of a hospital. Profound evil and injustice, which hopefully will be exposed one day soon and all the guilty thrown in jail as he is released. All in the name of disarming Australia and still some can’t see it. Hang on to your guns America..

The Vast majority of our main media is a Leftist propaganda machine: Consider who owns our free TV networks (7, 9, 10, ABC, SBS). In Melbourne, the absolute Monopoly of Leftist Labor Party favouring media is almost complete when you add one of the 2 major print media The Age being far Left also. So all our free TV and 1 of the 2 main print media are Leftist. That is an Absolute Leftist Monopoly here in Melbourne!
Kevin Rudd is a voice for the socialist Globalist UN-China alliance. An absolute puppet. The Labor Party are enemies of our free Australian democracy. And here in Melbourne we’re living under perpetual tyranny, house arrest for months. Absolute Bastard Labor Party, enemies of Australia, enemies of our families, our children, our basic freedoms.

I think Rudd calling out Murdoch is funny. Labor is not a friend of the people either so I’m blowed where we go for unbiased news. I don’t like the left one bit and it’s continually being shoved in our faces via every television news outlet and the ABC.
So far the only bit of conservative cover we get is on Sky news though I agree that the vaccine story is ignored there too. I’d rather live in this capitalist world than in a totalitarian one. It’s rotten but most people get a slice of the pie. I went to visit my family in East Germany and let me say the piece of pie was paper thin. While greed is endemic it does not stop at the border of Leftland !

It is a terrible indictment on Australia when so many people are turning off mainstream television and not buying newspapers. How this situation was allowed to happen is just disgusting. Anyone with a bit of brain power should know that you do not give so much power to one person or organization, and expect to get a balanced and truthful reporting.
My letters to the editor stopped when I started mentioning vaccination, so luckily I have had good coverage for a few years on emails and facebook, but now that too is being heavily censored. I even had one email slide off my screen the other day. Where did it go?
I’m not too worried really, because if you don’t know the truth by now, you have probably missed the last train out of town and are left at the station with Murdoch and all those poor unfortunates who worked for him. ABC & SBS are not much better of course, for some weird reason they think that the New World Order will be better, obviously having no understanding of history or totalitarian rule. The system was broken, but it could have been repaired with a bit of common sense, truth and control of the obscene greed that overtook us in our freedom..

Dear Editor,
Some if this mans comments may have validity however let us not ignore the Australian National Broadcaster- the ABC , funded in excess of 1 billion $ by we the Taxpayers , year after year.
It would not be so bad if the Publicly owned entity were say even 10 % unbiased toward Conservatives.
I personally only ever watch Death in Paradise, Father Brown & Crime thrillers
, gave up with the political & social commentary years ago.
