When we returned in 1967 instructions were issued not to wear uniforms off military bases as the people of Australia were in riot mode against the Asian war, which in fact was classified as a police action.
Issued with two military ribbons, the medals were being struck to be issued which I received in 1968 and wore them to that Anzac march in Sydney. Several beers after the march with fellow vets we circled a street rubbish bin, took the medal off then filed them for collection by a council rubbish truck.
We have one in three politicians just as stupid as the other two and the Prime Minister is a character cast in a delusional mold running the country on your vote.
I am 80 now having seen Australia as a great nation and proud to be part of it then only to witness political parties demolish my Australia while introducing a internment camp lifestyle enjoyed by faithful political party sheeple and lemmings.

Our lads have always done us proud on the battle field with numerous outstanding feats under difficult to impossible conditions.
Its a shame that Australians can’t unite on at least one day to say thanks.
Even the RSL clubs don’t seem to carry much of an ANZAC theme any more, its all about poker machines and big screen TV’s. I know they have to make things pay for themselves but it just now seems to be blatant disregard.
In my club there was a small area in which they asked for suggestions how it be used and I put in the idea of some quiet “drink booths” based on a WWI rail carriage heading towards the front lines with monitor screens in lieu of windows with distant battle sounds and flashes in the night. I even offered to draw it all up in detail so it could be constructed but they put a couple of big screen TV’s up on the wall instead. I’ve suggested a lot of other things as well but they just don’t seem to be interested in the ANZAC theme anymore.

I have some (very limited) idea of what you would have felt like on your return.
I was in 3RAR in 1972, we were forbidden to attend any Vietnam protests in Adelaide. On one occasion was confined to barracks when a very large protest was being held. Advised to not be in uniform on public transport. The Army was not all that popular at the time,
1973 posted to Singapore / Malaysia, the government kept our service there on the quiet, returned home still on the quiet, no recognition until 30 years later.
There are many who have a great deal of respect for you, for doing what you believed to be the right thing to do, put your life on the line, to serve your country.
I do not attend ANZAC day services, instead, throughout each year I remember the treatment dished out to us by our fellow Australians and my KIA uncles in WW1 and all of those who served in all of our wars / conflicts and peace keeping missions.
I also remember that our governments have followed the dictates of the elites and their lackeys, getting us involved in wars that (back to your above mentioned comment) “Today the enemy is within and must be stopped.”
We are at war, to protect the good names and sacrifices made by yourself and all of those who fought for our freedom in the past, and;
to take back our country, and protect our families, mates and other fellow Australians,. Would all of those who have already made the sacrifices in the past expect any less of us? This war is unlike any other war.
Should this be talked about on ANZAC day? Should the police have shot protestors in front of the shrine of remembrance in Melbourne?
I am showing respect for the ANZACs by letting them know that we remember them and will not let their sacrifices go to waste.

My great aunt nursed Anzacs in a Btitish repat hospital and moved to NZ after the war. God help anyone who used the word ” celebration” in her presence on that day. They got their pedigree read regardless of who, where or when.

Anzac is portrayed as a day of celebration and less of remembrance. Yes ,we beat them the bloody Germans and Japanese, and all the others like the Korean, Vietnamese, Iraqi etc. As a migrant I have difficulties to integrate on that subject. It should be a day of remembrance and bereavement for all fallen in wars. Have you ever given it a thought how migrants feel about it? Remember, also the enemies believed that they were fighting for a just cause. The words ´also believed´ is deliberate. By studying history you gradually learn the truth will come out slowly over years, e.g. the iraq war.
