Hi Alison, As with all of Taika Waititi’s films, there is alway a strong underlying social commentary and/or message. He is not simply a prolific and gifted writer, director and actor. As an Apanui Maori descendant, he is well versed in historic and present sociology, choosing film making as a conduit. He shuns the whole Hollywood fakery. His early masterpiece ‘Once Were Warriors’ was so raw, honest and confronting that people still talk about it. It wasn’t much of a glowing portrait of his own people, but it was intended to educate other’s as to why such awful things occur within a community.
