Re: the aboriginal community speaking out: My 3rd great-grandmother (aboriginal) was ‘taken’ during the Hawkesbury & Nepean River war (NSW) by missionaries & married off to a convict’s son. She was given the Irish (Catholic) name of Mary Nowlan, b: around 1815 on the North Shore of Sydney and died on 29 Dec 1856.
She was put down a well by her husband because she would go walk-a-bout and leave her ‘white children’ to return to her tribe if she wasn’t contained while her husband Thomas Redgrave would visit his brother on the South Shore (known now as Circular Quay). Mary’s husband built & ran a pub called the Fig Tree Inn at Billy Blue’s Point at St Leonards on the North Shore.
This history is documented in a publication known as “From Trace to Tarmac”, a tourist piece for the North Sydney History Walk (kept at the Mrs Macquarie’s Chair Family History society).
I identify with the Aboriginal community and know of the hell you went through at the hands of the British aristocracy as we all have been – British convicts indentured to a foreign country by their own people – the BAR association of their English ‘elite’ masters just for being poor.
I would like to say to my fellow Aboriginal communities around Australia – WE, didn’t do this to you – the bloody British did, many, many years ago. The convicts who were sent to Australia were subjected to the same indignities that your forebears endured. Please understand that we are not your enemy, the foreign Corporate Australian Government is the enemy of us ALL – black and white.
